"Wolves owner Glen Taylor even got on the phone with Olshey and passionately told him to just find a way to sign Batum himself, rather than waiting on a sign-and-trade. The Wolves were hesitant to handcuff their cap for 72-plus hours knowing they had no shot at their target."

This is interesting. Olshey said this was what he wanted to do. Guessing Batum's agent was the hold up.

You know what, the one thing that part of the story said to me was that maybe Nic really did want to play for Minnesota?

Yea he did, but it was a pipe dream about playing with the old roy and rubio.

Give him 40 minutes a game at SG, the rock constantly, and the freedom to make mistakes and we could see a whole new Nic. One that is a centerpiece of this team that lives up to his contract. Batum gets to be Batman for Blazers , the Wolves would of had him back to being Robin.

Funny you should post this....... today was my first day off in weeks and I woke up to a mounds of bark dust and gravel. The wife had me doing hard labor all day. I'm a tired motherfucker right now.

So even your wife uses you for yard-work?

Would it surprise anyone if Khan signed Roy ONLY as a move to get Batum? I think it was widely known that Batum looked up to Roy.

No. I think he is trying to blackmail the Blazers into this Webster compensation thing

it's one thing to mess with Bouna Ndaiye. If he reneges on Roy, he pisses off the Wassermann Group, and will never get a premium free agent again.

Wait... if we let Batum walk, that means Kahn wouldnt be able to pay Roy or Shved??? Some one get Kahn a financial planner.

I think they could get Shved for the exception, but not Roy unless they made another deal

This entire episode was emotional from the get-go. We're both fucked. Either MIN overpays Batum and we get squat or we overpay Batum and MIN misses out on the free agents they covet. I think the background on the Webster deal really colored the analysis of MIN and made them want to mess with us. In either case, they've succeeded.

Yeah, it was pretty clear from the beginning that this was personal between both teams.

It's a shame too. It seemed that Portland and Minny were decent trading partners. I guess all good things come to an end eventually.

I suspect if there weren't so many hard feelings, we would have dealt him for Williams and maybe a pick, but it was obvious that Kahn wasn't about to give us a good deal, and we sure as hell weren't going to give them Batum for a bunch of crap or nothing at all.

Very true. As much as I don't believe Batum is worth 46 mil for 4 years; he is a valuable player in terms of talent. I'm almost thinking we should just match and let the chips fall. Maybe use Batum in a trading secanrio after we match?

We absolutely HAVE to match the offer for Batum. He might be overpaid, but even that is debatable if you look at what other small forwards around the league are making.

pretty sure he can't be traded for a while and his consent would be needed

Don't worry. Kahn will be fired within 18 months. :)

Sounds about right. 1%'ers ruining it for everyone again. Occupy the Rose Garden and Target Center!

Does he have a no trade clause in the offer sheet or is it just trade kicker? BFW said he could be traded in January.

I said "for a while" and I think Jan is correct but I also think the 1st yr of his contract it can only be with his consent

January 15 if the player is a Larry Bird or Early Bird free agent, re-signs with his prior team, his team is over the cap, and he receives a raise greater than 20% in the first season of his contract.

edit, all of the above.

I believe you have to be in the league 8 years to receive a no trade clause.

A "no-trade" clause prevents the team from trading the player without the player's consent. A no-trade clause can be negotiated into a new contract1 if the player has been in the NBA for at least eight seasons, and has played for the team with which he is signing for at least four seasons.

with his consent the answer is yes I believe

I don't think that's part of the new CBA. From what I remember hearing (I don't know 100% sure); they did away with "no trade" clauses in contracts. I could be wrong though.

Ahhh okay so we can trade Batum, even though we just signed him without his permission. He hasn't been in the league for that long since he has only been in the league for 4 years right?
