I have linked it before, and I'll link it again because it has meaning. I'm not sold on MDA, but Pat Bev SPECIFICALLY called out Houston's offense as a system that would maximize Dame's offensive potential.

dames manager has also talked about MDA getting the most out of his role players. From an offensive standpoint, there really isn’t anyone better. But it would require a top top defensive assistant. Wonder if Clifford would be down if he doesn’t get a head job

I liked his teams in Phoenix and in Houston. (Except for Harden)

maximazing dames offensive potential is cool and all

but isn’t it basically maxed out already? Is he gonna average 35 with MDA?

The lack of focus on defense after the debacle of 2020-2021 is very concerning

Getting MDA he had losing record one year in Denver and 3 years in New York and 2 years he had losing record in LA. Now he was successful in phoenix and Houston. So if he comes to coach the Blazers it's not guaranteed if we will have winning record with him.

With Lillard's range we can get that 7 seconds down to 4 seconds.

Let's say both teams time of possession is equal.

That means we get the ball for 24 minutes a game.

4 seconds a possession means 15 shots a minute.

That's 360 3pt shots by Lillard a game.

Since they're deep range shots lets say Lillard only makes 25% of them.

That's 90 made 3pt shots a game.

OR 270 POINTS PER GAME!

We don't need to worry about defense.

I think it comes down to effort and teams being unable to make life so hard for him on offense.

Both Dame and CJ have to take/make extremely difficult shots to put points on the board. Some of that is self inflicted, but I think they could both be much better/more efficient on offense. Harder to stop as well.

thats all great

but we will be back to the same shit in the playoffs when we can’t get a stop

there are coaches that will make our offense AND defense better. Why are we going after a coach who has always had major defensive flaws in his teams?

dantonis defensive deficiencies are overrated. His units were better on average than Terry’s for example. He’s also got a much more modern approach to defending.

I think there's a lot of overstating the importance of the head coach and understating the importance of the assistant coaches. A great head coach is nothing without their assistants. We should be judging this hire based upon the entire staff, not just the person in charge.

For example: MDA can work in Portland and we can be better defensively if the proper assistants are brought in.

Dame is going to have much to say about who he wants as coach. I say he'd prefer Billups as winning pg himself.

Disagree.

Raja Bell referenced his time with D'Antoni on his podcast today: paraphrasing

I love Mike and think he's great. Our focus in Phoenix was on offense. We shot 100s of shots at pre-practice, post-practice and most of what we did was based around how we were gonna play offensively. I liked it. But that was what we defaulted to. 4th quarter, minute and half to go, we have to get a stop.... the focus was still on offense. Defense has to be beaten into you and we didn't necessarily do that. That's OK. Some coaches are offensive minded, some are defensive minded. We had some really good individual defenders like Shawn Marion, but you're only as good as your weakest link and not everyone was bought in on that end of the court. Nash had limitations physically and was tasked with so many things to do on offense. But other guys did not really mind if they blew a defensive coverage. I didn't really mind because I was defensive-minded and could help out, but that can only last like three possessions. On the fourth possession, human nature kicks in and you go, "well WTF am i doing busting my ass helping you out every time down?!" One possession it's ok, but if it happens over and over again, it eats away at the fabric of your team.

^^^ this is the culture that a coach creates. If the coach is not preaching and yelling at guys for making mistakes in practice or in games, they will keep lazing around on that end. We need a hard-ass on defense like Thibs to improve this team. Not sure MDA is it even if i like him. The assistant can only do so much when the head coach really doesn't bother on that end of the floor.

That said, I did a breakdown of his defenses in Houston, and their success/failure was highly dependent on the roster. When he had Paul/Ariza/Tucker/Capela/et al, those teams were really good on defense.

I don't think we'll ever be a top 5 defense, but top 10 might suffice. What D'Antoni will NOT bring for certain is a defense-first culture. And no assistant will change that.

In coaching or I guess in life ‘you’re good at what you emphasize”. MDA doesn’t emphasize defense. And I’m not sure if it was a mandate from Morey or what but the amount of 3’s his team launch would probably make Lillard the leading scorer in the NBA and their defense would give up 125 a game.

DAntony would be a stupid move. The worst coach possible for us. The fact his defensive numbers are better than f'ing Terry Stotts' says very little.
Give Hammon a chance
