...more like the logistics of offering a live streaming broadcast that is wholly owned by the Blazers organization and offered direct to fans. In theory, couldn't they essentially flip a switch once the platform itself is developed (ie -- the web and mobile app versions of the direct stream). More similar to the Blazers app -- but with option to upgrade for a live stream of ALL games (no blackouts).

@riverman I am guessing that maybe the lucrative TV deals that these sports orgs get prevent them from offering such a service (exclusivity rights etc)

If I were the Blazers I'd offer Root Sports part of the pie for the licensing rights to broadcast..give them some kickback and stock options....Root Sports isn't that big I don't think and it's pretty local...the Blazers have to make money after that covid no fan stretch so I'd guess there must be a way to do this...I sure don't know how to go about it but where there's a need, there's a buck to be made

No, not at all. Only the premium channels are a la carte on cable. All the other channels come in large blocks.

Seriously...if there were a platform that simply charged, say $10/month for access, and then allowed you to select specific channels you wanted, and you only pay the monthly charge for those specific networks and nothing else, I have to imagine that would be well-received.

i think this is what 99% of us would prefer. And then for those who still want lots of channels there can also be channel bundling discounts.

our pay for four channels and choose a fifth free, etc.

Could be different pricing tiers per channel based on demand i suppose. But id still much prefer that over having to pay for everything, of which 90% i dont use.
 
But those small channels are often owned by the bigger channels. And most people won't choose them, while most all will choose ESPN. So instead of getting to pay $10 for ESPN, they'll charge you 45, because they know you want it, and they have to make up the loss they take on their smaller stations.

Good point. Sounds like they should improve the programming on those smaller channels then or do away with them and morph the few good shows together into one good channel.

As a sports fan this is exactly what you don't want .... live sports is what costs these companies the most money ... they add on the Food Network, HGTV and all the other crap to help off set those charges to people that aren't into sports but want to watch whatever home fix it show is on or crappy dating show is on those channels.

I'd wonder if the current TV contract prohibits internet streaming on any other channel...?
 
Anyone has an update on this?

I have Youtube TV and as of now Root Sports isn't included.

Other than ATT and Fubo, any other options that has Root Sports??

I think Direct TV has it and theres a way to get it where you watch via apps and streaming.

I'm out of market so I'll probably just buy league pass.
 
I would think root will reach agreements with some more streamers or providers.

This is a lot different from comcast sports net, in that root isn't trying to have a monopoly as a local tv/internet provider in the NW as comcast was.

Blazers CEO Chris McGowan said the following on his media day interview:

"Distribution is a big thing and you saw the announcement a couple weeks ago with FUBO and there will be more as we get closer to the season."

Hopefully Root Sports becomes available to as many avenues.

ive explored this as well after having resisted in years prior, but have read that the league has now shut this loophole.

It's only $20 for the whole season with no blackouts through India. I'm gonna wait until a few weeks into the season before jumping into it to see if the league really got around to closing this option.

And cheaper! I hardly watch any channel that isn't live sports. I was paying ~$45/month the past year with the Sling team pass and it worked fine for the most part as I was out of market.

Having moved in state this year, I'm shocked that my cheapest option is ~$70/month for the same. Can't justify that for essentially JUST the Blazers.

I wish they would just do a standalone stream from the team alone. I know the Clippers had explored this option in the past.

I think the league/streaming sites/etc monitor VPN's and shuts down access to those IP address so maybe it would work at first, but then one day you can't connect. Seems they could also ban the account as I'd think its a violation of terms.

I am out of market but have a VPN on my personal network so I can use league pass/streaming sites anywhere in the world.

They do monitor them, but VPN sites can also change their IP address frequently to get around that.

I haven't tried it as my default yet, but I may have to figure it out this season.

Seeing the cord cutting options delve into the same wormholes that cable/satellite companies did is extremely disappointing. Sling is the only one that still remains cheaper but even they started to package networks and keep increasing prices frequently.

The whole point of these options (Hulu/YTTV/Fubo/etc) was to allow an a la carte situation where you can pay for the channels you want. I think they realized that no one would pay for 90% of the channels if this was offered, so they too went back to the original model and now charge $70-100 a month, which is essentially the same price as conventional cable.

I would happily pay $25 a month for just Blazers/ESPN/TNT/NBATV if there were no blackouts. Unfortunately, corporate America and greed ruined this for the consumers.

Eff 'em. If they don't offer what I want at a reasonable price I'll watch via other means and they'll get nothing.
