Yes..... my company sent me to the Portland Juneteenth celebration last year to man a booth. Let's just say it was like 80% white people.

Also, both of the women who were running for city council were there, and they gave speeches, and their speeches were pretty damn hateful towards white people.

Never heard of it before I googled it this morning. Now I'm wondering why I've never heard of it before now. Seems like a darned good thing to celebrate. Why anyone would try to ruin it with hate speech of any sort, I can't imagine. I could see myself wearing one of these:

I had never heard of it until we moved to Texas and my employer had a Juneteenth luncheon.

It's a celebration of the abolition of slavery in 1865 in Texas and the emancipation of enslaved African Americans throughout the Confederate states.

What absolutely kills me is that all 50 states don't recognize it....or celebrate it anyway. I think something like 45 or so states recognize it.

Doesn't it only apply to Texas?
Why not celebrate the day Lincoln declared the Emancipation Proclamation by executive order, January 1, 1863, New Year's Day?

I've "celebrated" it my entire life. I've performed at 4 Junteenth Celebrations when I was doing music. Right here in Portland.

I've never heard about it on tv and I certainly can't imagine how I was supposed to ask one of the few black guys I'm around about this.

Hey, I know about MLK day but are there any emancipation holidays I should know about?

c'mon bro...I've spent more than half my adult life in asia learning things most local folks here will never pay attention to culturally....Juneteenth was not taught in the schools I attended...nor my sons....nor celebrated by black musicians I've known for decades...it's great to learn about now though...and yeah...I don't have the same experience as you at all..I can tell you about great people throughout the civil rights movements...and history...I've read a lot of literature from Maya Angelou to Martin Luther King Jr and never encountered the Juneteenth celebration or mention of it...maybe it just didn't register....I can tell you some cultural holidays that you are probably unaware of as well.....did you know the worst thing you could do to any Thai person is touch them with your feet...it's why Thai boxing is sensationalized over there. The world is fascinating and thank you for clearing up what Juneteenth means as well as MM for the thread. Learn something everyday and whatever path leads to knowledge...it's not a race to the end...it's endless

just finished the link....great read....1979 to 2012....honestly was completely unaware of this issue...and Texan history pretty much. I enjoyed the link ..well written and very informative...didn't remember Hillary as SOS addressing it either but I've been a part time hermit for a long time

I question why none of my black friends that I've worked with for so many years ever celebrated this as a holiday or referenced it …..everybody has plenty of time.....you should have met my son when he moved here to Portland and didn't know any names of sports franchises..tv shows...famous people here..yeah..we each accumulate knowledge at our own pace...it's not on any calendar in my home either although Chinese New Year is...

As we evolve if we ever do...I'd recommend just stopping color tagging humans at some point and saying...Bad people DO need to figure this shit out and care about your fellow citizens or stupid people or violent people, etc.....being bad isn't exclusive...it's universal.
