He just said so on the radio - no idea if its anything serious or just a minor thing.

That's really really bad news. I know it's not a bad injury but in the bigger picture I worry about Nurk being injury prone.

A mild calf strain as he ramps up his workouts during rehab makes him injury prone?

Calf strains are the worst. I get them periodically and it takes FOREVER to recover. I'd rather turn an ankle... For what it's worth, mine are always from overdoing it.

Overdoing IT?

Man, you've gotta switch to some less strenuous positions.

Whiteside is not getting moved.

Agreed. It's going to take Nurk some time to work back into shape and, even when he gets there, there's no backup. Unless you're a super Biggie Swanigan fan.

Why couldn't we get a big back in a deal for Whiteside...?

Could happen, but unless it's a starting caliber center, I don't see the Blazers being willing to count on Nurk to carry much load to begin with.

I don't understand why our front office would be that silly...

The Blazers have 5 games between the deadline and the all-star break, Nurkic and Skal should be back in the first game after the break, Collins in 2 or 3 weeks after... After the break, Nurk's his strain should be gone and his leg fully healed.

In a season where the Blazers are 21-27 and have almost no chance at getting anything but the 8th seed, we couldn't risk 5 games of having a role-player caliber big instead of Whiteside, because then we might lose out on that 8th seed and 1st round sweep? Instead, we'll risk not having the pieces to acquire a legitimate forward upgrade in the off-season and next season (even if Whiteside resigns), we'll risk that keeping Whiteside for those final 2 months would essentially be a rental with him leaving, we'll risk him being unhappy off the bench, we'll decide not to play Skal at all once Zach gets back, all for a 1st round loss to the hands of the Lakers?

It makes no sense to me. If all our bigs get hurt, you take the lottery pick and set yourselves up with the assets in the summer or next season to make a legitimate jump.

If someone is willing to trade a star for Whiteside, which I really doubt, then sure. Otherwise, just because some fans around here don’t see any value in making the 8th seed doesn’t mean that the players and management see it that way. Dame will take any shot he gets. Carmelo and Ariza aren’t looking to sit out one of the final playoff shots they’re going to get. Besides, a rotation of Nurk and Whiteside makes the Blazers dangerous.

I’m not sure you can count on Skal being back. Depending upon how extensive the damage to his cartilage is, it could go either way.

That’s the way your comment came across to me. Maybe I misunderstood?

yes, you misunderstood. I wasn't saying that a calf strain was a major injury. But over the course of 4 seasons Nurkic had a torn patella tendon that required surgery; a non-displaced fracture of the right leg, and his severe injury last season. Three major leg injuries and the only reason he didn't miss a lot more games is that two of the injuries came late in seasons

and now apparently, he has a strained calf trying to come back. Sometimes those can be a quick heal. Other times they can take forever to heal. IIRC, Clyde Drexler missed around 25 games one season because of a strained calf

I had forgotten about that patella tendon injury. I thought you were saying the calf injury was the third. My bad.

I’m no doctor, but I don’t think the fractures are that big of deal. They typically heal stronger than the original bone, particularly when there’s a titanium rod inserted in the leg.
