Hawaiian breakfast....chorizo and eggs....any market has rice box lunches and seafood salads...if you were on the Big Island I could name a few places..I'm sure they have them in Kauai

I haven't but never liked it when I was sitting near a waterfall in the rainforest and some tourists came cruising around in one of those things...helicopters make me nervous...
 
Rent a couple of scooters and cruise around.....good way to check out the island

it's a Hawaiian tradition bro....Portuguese blood is in most locals y'know....Hawaiian food has lots of Portuguese food as well as Japanese and Phillipino food...poki is marinated sashimi with sea weed and poppy seeds....rice didn't originate there either

Hawaiian-style sausage, often called “portagee”, dates to the 19th century, when some 10,000 Portuguese immigrants came to Hawai’i to work the cane fields. They brought with them the classic Portuguese sausages, linguiça and chouriço, smoked and laden with garlic, paprika, and vinegar. In a classic of culinary evolution, the Hawaiians then added their own native pineapple and brown sugar, along with soy sauce from Asia, and for me, the world of force meats hasn’t been the same since.

read my link...it was imported to Hawaii in the 1800s before Hawaii was a state....Portuguese also colonized Macau and Taiwan way back in those days

not my Hawaiian friends.....I've had hundreds of breakfasts with locals who introduced me to the stuff....the Portuguese are a big part of local Hawaiian culture bro...
 
yeah, they call it Portugese Sausage then, not Chorizo. Literally no one calls it Chorizo.
 
Portuguese also brought the tiple and uke to Hawaii....most people think the uke is a Hawaiian instrument but the Portuguese called it the quatro.....

dude...it's on the menu board at the Hilo café and every breakfast shop on the Big Island....sorry...I know this to be true

I'm not down with the fried spam...avocados in the islands taste like steak and butter though...best I've ever tasted
 
Costco is also a good place to stock up if you have a kitchen in your rental. Like pineapples are pretty dope there if they're local. Good poke too.
 
I used to buy a tuna from the fishermen in Hilo Bay for 2 bucks...take it to the local pub and the bartender would make poki for everyone...good way to make friends in Hawaii...take food to share at the pub.....they love you when you do that...Hawaiian folk are great fun

Don't know if it's still around but I did that at the Reuben M Fleet Space Museum in San Diego in a 360 degree theatre...also had river rafting all over the country....great way to have an armchair adventure
 
There's a Costco right by the airport. Were there for 8 days. Might go there, but there is a Foodland? pretty close to us. House has a full kitchen.

fruit stands are cheap....papayas are the best..lilikoi (small guava) bananas...if you've got a blender you're set dude
 
The avocados I got in Hilo you could cut in half...they're enormous...fill the center with some poki and not even need a bowl...just split one between two people and just chuck the skin when you're done eating

Groceries are expensive in hawaii. I'd get stuff you'd use a lot in a week at Costco like a 18 pack of eggs, drinks, snacks, etc. I remember the pineapples being awesome...Maui gold I think. Maybe booze too will be a lot cheaper.

For meats, fish and that kind of stuff you would want to buy more frequent I would just get at food land.
