news reports told me that a group of black kids in New Jersey knocked out a random stranger therefore I'm going to avoid all black people on the street (unless I have my gun on me)

Nope. Still sounds fucking retarded

If you would like to go over crime statistics by race, I would be happy to

or gang statistics by race.

It's not fair, but it's reality.

My wife doesn't trust Priests or male elementary school teachers. They are not all bad, in fact the majority are great, but some bad apples do spoil the whole bunch girl in this case.

Your wife is part of a huge problem then. Schools are begging for more male teachers, but why would a man enter that profession when they'd just have nonsensical women accuse them of being a pedophile.

Your wife is a slave to the media's scare tactics, and it seems you are too.

So media scare tactics are what the prisons are filled with?

Both of my cousins were molested by priests. is that a media scare tactic?
My wife's uncle, a school teacher, molested her brothers. Is that a media scare tactic?

maybe it's more life experiences than media scare tactics.

meh..why use factual examples when it is far more fashionable to speak in ideals

Denny has a backlog of pedo teacher articles he's been sitting on for a thread just like this one.

LOL. They have websites dedicated to providing info and updates on all the teachers that have been busted from sleeping with their students. I like to visit there when I get bored (or when there's a new hot teacher that got busted).

And since I heard it from a 2nd hand source, I now am suspicious of all priests and teachers.

That's a little much, but I think the gist of it is, is be hyper vigilant when it comes to walking alone on the streets (urban areas). I always am watching whats going on around me when walking in the city. If there is a gang of seedy looking people I try to keep my distance, but not overly so. Just be perceptive of the situation that's all. You never know. I listen to Mult.Co dispatch daily and you'd be surprised how often there are bad things happening to people.

I've never been attacked or felt threatened by homeless people.

Is that you, BenDavis500?

I work downtown, near Lloyd Center and the park adjacent to it. The max is a drug shuttle, and the homeless often lurk in the park there during the warmer months. They are sometimes overly aggressive with their panhandling, often annoying, and very dirty (they don't pick up their trash).

However, that is also the behavior of some of the teens/kids that loiter there too. So, pick your poison. Just watch your back.

You've never actually even spoken with a homeless person, have you?

I have indeed. There are many different kinds of homeless people in Portland. The "street kids" are often middle class runaways from California.

Yeah, just like "flash mob robberies" are just "youths" that are "protesting".

Lloyd Center isn't really downtown.

Sometimes homeless people have dogs though maris, and dogs are horrifying

I dunno if Portland still is, but it was the teenage homeless capital of the US about a decade ago. Both of the reasons you offer are a big part of the problem. The other piece is that many of the street kids are heavily into drugs, and black tar heroin is/was more readily available in Portland (and cheaper) than any other West Coast city.
regarding the bold part. I don't think that is true at all. BTH is everywhere along the west coast, and just by sheer population I think the bay area, and seattle both have/had more. It may have been cheaper though, I don't know about that.

Often times those dogs are violent (and hungry) towards strangers because they pick up the habits and attitude of their owners. (not all, but often). I've heard of plenty of dogs getting taken by animal control due to their aggressive behavior to pedestrians walking near the homeless people/owners.

I dunno how credible these articles are, but they reiterate what my point and what you cast doubt on. I'm not going to spend a ton of time looking for articles, but here are a few recent ones from after the problem has improved (after reaching a high point in 1999-2001). Read those and tell me I'm wrong.

I spent two years working on a project related to Portland being considered the heroin capital of the US back in 2000-2001, including working with media and law enforcement. So, while you don't think it's true. It's a lot more true than you think. Consider yourself better educated now.

There were a few articles that came out while I was working on project (Oregonian, Portland Tribune, and WW I believe) that referred to Portland being the teenage homeless capital of the US because it coincided with the availability of black tar heroin (and it being more readily available here than anywhere else, especially West Coast).

Apparently you don't recall the LLoyd Center Mall commercial.

In the center of the city....... Lloyd Center
In the center of it all........ Lloyd Center
The only Center in the center of the city.....
Lloyd Center...... HAS IT ALL!

Exactly. Center of the city, not down town on the west side of the city

With the max, the street kids permeate the surrounding downtown areas as well. Hell they might actually make it out to the burbs since the panhandlers do so well out here.

It's not semantics. Lloyd Center is not located in Downtown

Downtown:
of, in, or characteristic of the central area or main business and commercial area of a town or city.

It's close enough to be considered downtown, only separated by a river.

The point was, I work in an area of high homelessness and crime where this shit could possibly happen more so than in other areas, thus you need to pay special attention to groups of homeless people, seedy looking characters, and urban high school kids.
