Larry Miller: Oden is still in Blazers' long term plans

It would break my heart more than years of mediocrity.

"we'll shock the world....as you break down a 4th time"

heh. :(

kingspeeds avatar is quite possibly the funniest one ive ever seen

almost as funny as people counting on oden to return to a decent player

I guess this time would be better for Greg. Alot of us who werent expecting stardom anymore but at least serviceable minutes from him are done hoping. Why get rid of him now (unless he was a required throw in for someone who can help a bit) But at this point its just as low risk, high reward for the Blazers as it is OKC. IMO the pressure is completely off Oden now. So if he ever comes back, anything he gives would be more of a feel good story a-la Shawn Livingston.

Larry Miller: I told him "we'll get through this, then shock the world."

Grant Hill should be an inspiration to Greg (and to us fans). He had a stretch where he played only 131 games over SIX seasons. Now, over the last three seasons, including this one, he's only missed one and he was incredibly effective in last year's playoffs helping his team reach the WCF. He was also a huge reason they beat us.

Maybe a lock out is best. Can we start now? The ways things are going all of our players will need a year off. Then we can come back and "Shock the World".

This could all be a blessing in disguise. I have not exactly figured out how just yet, but you never know. They just need to play hard this year. When you have a decent core, one little break can turn things around. (Just like one little "break" can screw you) But in the NBA things can change quickly. Sure we will need some luck, but I never believed we were a dynasty when we won the lottery, and I don't think we need to start over now. Build with the mind set that Greg won't be back, but make sure he does come back.

Good call, I have forgotten about Hill and those years with the Magic, that was going to be the next big thing down there wasn't it? Duncan was coming over and TMAC....they were going to rule the EAST. He has play very nice for the Suns and if Greg can make it through this then more power too him.

I'm not saying that Greg will be the best we all thought he was going to be when we drafted him, but I think he could have a nice role on a Portland team in the future with limited minutes. I'd just once like to hit a home run in the lottery......Oden (knees) Roy (knees) ..........

If Miller believes this tripe, I really hope *he* isn't part of the Blazers' long term plans.

I would say that Zydrunas Ilgauskas is a better role model for Oden.

He missed an enormous amount of time his first few years in the league and came back to be a good player.

Fuck it.

If Paul Allen wants to pay for the dude to try and come back then that's his choice.

I am just going to pretend Oden isn't on the team until such time as he returns to actually play.

I'm happy about this news as well. Hell his right knee is stronger than it was before the surgery so his left knee should be stronger too after this surgery. I still believe! It's just going to be all the more sweeter when Oden is playing and dominating the league!

The only thing more painful than seeing Oden never bounce back would be to see Oden bounce back on another team.

I hope the Blazers remain committed to him because the cost of keeping him is almost nothing (other than Paul Allen's money).

Ed O.

Yes, he's in our long term plans, so much so that we extended him....oh wait, that's right, we didn't.

extending him now (or before the deadline) only meant we would be stuck with him at a much more (potentially) costly #.

I'd rather the team do a 1 year big deal and then have him sign a reasonable contract after it, then have signed a big contract before.

That is why, imho, they didn't sign him before, not because he isn't/wasn't/won't be ni their long term plans.

Does anyone understand what exactly is meant by his knee being stronger after the MF surgery and what that has to do with anything taking place now? I sure don't. How does repairing cartilage make the knee stronger? That would seem to be bone terminology, and any gains there are probably just due to him allegedly eating healthier.

I like it. I'm not ready to give up on GO, either. Fuck it, we've got this far. Let's see this shit 'til the end.

Agreed. I see no reason to give on Oden. He can lose some weight, become more mobile and take a bit of a load off his 75 year old knees.

From what I understand the cartilage isn't repaired it is replaced with a harder scar tissue that acts to protect the bone and joint similar to the way the cartilage does. The knee isn't really stronger, it's just harder to knock off the new scar tissue.

Why is it that's not reassuring?

Also the only way Oden could truly make his bones stronger would be to rehab on a planet with stronger gravity.

So would amputating his knees be better then nothing?

Scientific studies show that MF surgery has a higher success rate than amputation when it comes to high-level athletes coming back to play at a high-level. ;)

I'm glad. There's currently no real risk to holding onto him, so they may as well. Getting rid of him as some sort of psychic, emotional release would be irrational.
