It was 4 years old when I was on and yes, it was clean, spacious and very well air conditioned. It was the flagship for the Gator Navy at the time. The Oklahoma City was the 7th fleet flagship at that time. And unless we were conducting amphibious operations with other elements of the gator fleet, yes we were pretty much on our own. Except for the submarine that was supposedly always within an hour away. They always tied up after us and tours were always available. As a flagship it was pretty Mickey Mouse duty but we pretty much had the best of everything. Riv, you missed the time an ensign fell overboard from the sponson deck, survived by making water wings out of his pants and got picked up a half day later by the Russian Trawler that was always trailing us. We traded cigarettes and ice cream to the Ruskies for him......
