I've often thought about that. However, we didn't really have access to our money until just a few years ago. Now, we've got 4 bedrooms, one of which I've converted into an office complete with a ton of Blazer memorabilia, 3 1/2 baths one of which is truly great, a kitchen the real estate agency described as gourmet, a large laundry room, a walk in pantry and lots of hardwood floor. Two wood fireplaces and one gas fireplace. All this and a great neighborhood that is really quiet except for about 4 or 5 Friday nights a year when the kids play their football games right across from our house. There's a beautiful public golf course a block and a half away.
My only complaint is that there is a steep hill we have to go down to get to South Shore and it can be treacherous in the Winter. But an ambulance takes me back and forth to the hospital so that's their problem.
One time I accidentally gave myself two shots of insulin. I woke up with four burly firemen in my family room. I had passed out. My wife called 911 and they were there in a truly speedy amount of time. They gave me an IV and saved my life. I love the city services here.
I used to know the long time chief of police, Leslie Dunbar. He grew up a half a block away from me when I live between 'C' and 'D' on second street. I think he was a patrol man when I got out of college and rented that house from my mom. I'm pretty sure it was him that stopped me one night when I was half a block from home. He must have known I was drinking too much but I told him I lived half a block away (he stopped me on 2nd and 'C') and he let me go. I'm forever indebted to him for that. Bty the way, I drink very very little these days and almost never more than one drink. I let my wife do the driving. Doctor's orders that I have to limit my fluid intake. I can only get rid of fluid in dialysis and any extra puts a burden on my heart.
My wife doesn't like the house. Too big to take care of and too much money, according to her, and yet it's gone up in value about $100,000 since we bought it three years ago. Me? I love it and we've done some improvements along the way.
