Lowe: Nurkic is taking qualifying offer

It's interesting that we haven't seen any workout pictures and vids from him so far this off season. Last season he was posting a lot showing how he was slimming down and remaking his body.
I saw one of him and Musa with a coach....had his Trailblazer shirt on in his home gym....said he loved it here and would be here to address his contract...all smiles.

Nurk is gonna DESTROY next season and will be worth whatever the market demands.

#FACTS

That is my hope. Our only real chance to contend is if the players we have now can really develop. We need Nurkic and Collins to become stars. I don't see anyone else on our roster with as much potential to transform the team.

It seems to me like this would be great for the Blazers. Nurk's cap hold as a RFA is $8.8M. If he takes the QO for $4.1M, it seems to me like that opens up options for sign and trades without worrying about getting hard capped at the apron. @PtldPlatypus , what say you?
Spotrac has the tax line projected at 123M (projected), which would put the apron at about 129M.

I show our taxable salaries for 2018-19 at 113,5M (including the dead money for Varejao, Ezeli, and Nicholson).

Factor in Nurk's QO (I have it at 4.75M), Simons' guaranteed deal (1.5M), and a min deal for Trent (~850K), and we're at 120.7M for 13 spots--about 8M below the apron.

So while we're technically below the apron, we're not far enough below that a S&T deal would benefit us at all unless we were not adding much salary.

But to answer you directly--yes, it could conceivably open up a possibility for an S&T (or even using the non-tax MLE), albeit a very limited one.

They've got the caphold for Nurk's QO at 4.1 mil. Renouncing everybody else (Davis/Napier/Connaughton) and only signing Simons at his rookie scale actually opens up the non-taxpayer MLE and we sneak in about 1.9 mil below the 123 mil tax line.

Interesting. Both Spotrac and Basketball-Insiders have it at 4.75. :dunno:

However, a player coming off a standard NBA contract (not a Two-Way contract) may qualify for a higher or lower qualifying offer based on whether or not he met the "starter criteria" in the previous season, or in the average of the previous two seasons. The starter criteria are based on starting at least 41 games or playing at least 2,000 minutes in the regular season.

  • If the player was drafted with picks 10-30 and met the starter criteria, his qualifying offer equals the amount of the qualifying offer2 applicable to the ninth pick in the same draft class.

That 9th pick would be Noah Vonleh. at salary +30%, his equals $4732065

So insiders and spotrac is more accurate it appears

Speaking of Noah, is he a FA this summer? He has been in Atlanta working his ass off all off season.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. I'd feel better if Nurk were locked up on a reasonable deal. I get that some suspect once he gets paid he'll stop beasting. I also get that Nurk probably doesn't want a reasonable deal; he wants a bigger payday. I guess I'll leave the strategy alone and let someone else explain to me which is better for the Blazers.

I think the $4.75M number is right. This article discusses how it's calculated depending upon when a player was drafted and whether he's achieved starter status:

One thing that this would do for the Blazers would be to enable them to avoid going into LT for at least another year. That's good because that would avoid repeater status until ET's and Meyers' contracts expire.

I don't see this as him playing games. I'd be surprised if the Blazers weren't 100% in favor of this approach.
It just makes him look money hungry. He certainly hasn’t earned anything close to more than 12 mil a season. Also doesn’t make him look committed to the team long term. I don’t like this, the only reason he is even remotely relevant is because we have him a chance to play.

What NBA player worth a damn isn't money hungry? I saw an interview where Dame said his bank account was his most important possession. Money, beyond its intrinsic value, is a measuring stick for players in the NBA. And as far as not earning anything more than $12M per year, all he's asking for by this move is another year to prove that he is worth more than that. He's taking the risk of a career-altering injury changing his chances at achieving that. I think some of you guys just are looking for reasons to bear a grudge against our players.

well means he will be trying to prove something in 18-19.
Lets see if he can show without question he's worth a max deal.

Honestly, I don't think his salary will be based solely on how he plays.

Blazers force game 6 in conference finals: Nurk gets Max
Blazers flame out in the 1st round: Nurk gets Biebs $$, or is let go.

If the Blazers postpone the repeater tax for another year because of this, and Nurk earns a fat payday after next season, I just hope the Blazers go all-in in 2019 and pay the man.

I don't think there is a difference between winning 48 games, only to grab the 7th seed and face GSW is round 1....
Or
Getting 49 games, winning a playoff series or two in 6 or 7 games.
Only to be eliminated by GSW in the WCF.

Now yes if Portland gets swept by a team not named GSW. Yes that would be a huge disappointment. But...

If we learned anything from the 2018 playoffs is that HCA in the West doesn't mean what it does in the East.
In the East if you get HCA you're all but guaranteed 8 games at least.
In the West however... HCA only guarantees you 4 games.
(Yes I'm still salty about Stotts' gameplan against the Pelicans)

Unless he learns to sack up around the basket and finish strong he can go imo. I don’t understand Seven footers who shoot lay ups and hooks from ONE foot away.

This would be a best case scenario for us. Get him cheap for one year and see what he is truly worth. We still have his bird rights and could offer more than anyone else.

Lots of bigs out there. Hoping we can get Davis back on an affordable deal too.
