My family's German so much of the meat prepared in that culture is veil (Schnitzel) or cabbage (sauerkraut) with sausage or pork hocks. I ate that at least once every couple of weeks when I was growing up. It was like having Eggs Benedict or apple pie for traditional American families. I don't know if vegans realize that a lot of when a lot of other cultures come to America they make their traditional recipes from whatever they can find. You can tell them to eat it with substitutes but they are still going to use whatever ingredients make it taste closest "to the way grandma made it." It's like... you can tell me that a non-alcoholic American beer approximates Weltenburger, but to me it's still going to taste like garbage.

I love Schnitzel but unfortunately I can no longer eat sausage

I felt the same but it will kill my heart about as quick as smoking would now....had to give it up along with lots of stuff I love...pickles I can't eat either and I love the damned things

I gave up smoking. I gave up sugar. I gave up almost all alcohol except on festive occasions. If you give up too much of your life to improve the quantity then it doesn't have any quality.

yeah....6months into heart failure recovery I can live 4 more years or 40.....I can still have a pork chop with onions mushrooms and garlic or roasted chicken or grilled salmon...just no more marbled meats or heavy salt...I'm used to it now but loved every hot dog along the way..my wife's family makes Chinese sausage that is the best on the planet....can't eat it anymore

Well. Stick around. I still want to here some of those concert stories. Rory Gallagher and Doug Sahm first please!

Agree. I am mostly vegetarian but eat meat sometimes weekends and when I go out. Same with alcohol and dessert. Special occasion. I am one of those who have to constantly be watching weight, unlike my brother and late father who never gained an ounce.

But I told my dental hygienist I will not give up drinking black tea no matter how much it stains my teeth. I go for cleaning three times a year and she always groans over tea stains, but fuck, I need one vice!
