Memphis loves them some Outlaw

The process began earlier this season when the Grizzlies approached tonight's opponent, the Portland Trail Blazers, about a potential trade involving forward Travis Outlaw.

According to league sources, the Blazers weren't interested in swapping Outlaw merely for draft picks so the deal quickly fizzled. It was the second time since last season that the Griz expressed interest in Outlaw, who is out another two months while recovering from a broken bone in his left foot.

No one in Blazers land (any of the players) would have liked it if Travis - who they all like and seem to appreciate - was treated like garbage. I am willing to bet that a lot of guys would have been questioning the commitment the team has for the players if this happened.

This should not come as any surprise. Zach had numerous "career" games against Memphis. They finally got him on their side and it has worked out remarkably well. Similarly, Travis has been a Memphis killer. If he were to fit in as well there as Zach has, it would be a brilliant acquisition.

Where do you get that from? From what I read, they were willing to swap either the Lakers' or Denver's first rounder for him. So a pick in the high 20s. Basically, picks that are sold for cash often enough to not be worth giving Outlaw away for it.

Outlaw is a bench player, and even though he is good value at his contract, if the team could have got a couple of future pieces for him (if a pair of Memphis firsts were really offered) the Blazers should have done it.

However, If we did trade him, we would have had another 4 mil to work with last offseason. I don't know if that would have helped at all. Likely, it would have just led to overpaying for a player.

Since the second Pryzbilla got hurt, I suggested that Outlaw and Pendergraph and a 1st Round pick and some cash (Paul Allen doesn't need it and the Grizzlies do) for Mark Gasol.

We don't need Pendergraph. We don't need Outlaw. We don't need another low 1st Round pick.

We do need Mark Gasol. He's every thing Greg Oden isn't.....healthy all the time, and a heck of a lot more experienced, and ready to bring an NBA title to Portland right now. It's time to stop waiting for Oden and move on. If he comes back and ever does anything for the team, then it will be gravy. But, it's time to move on.

And, Nate needs to move on. Andre Miller had 16 pts, 10 boards (while Martell had only 1), and 4 assists, so Nate sits him on the bench for the better half of the 4th Quarter so Brandon Roy can lose the game for us again with that anal-retentive Nate-McMillan Roy Ball where everyone stands around and looks stupid while Roy tries to dribble through 5 guys hoping to get a foul call and go to the line. Well, the refs weren't buying a ticket to that show tonight. As Roy fizzled (under Nate's orders), and Andre Miller wasted away on the bench, the Blazers lost to a team they had no business losing to last night.

Bayless needs to quit shooting 3's when he can take 2 or 3 steps forward and shoot a 15-footer. Just because he's open doesn't mean he needs to shoot the ball. He's not a 3-point shooter in this league.....yet. He's going to have to wait until 2011-2012 season to be that person who hits from 3's at a .400 clip.

But that's not what happened. Nate sat Miller down for the start of the 4th quarter and we went on a 25-9 run that got us back into the game. Roy then got his teammates- Howard, Webster, and Bayless- good shots but they missed them all. Finally, with the game tied and 30 secs to play, Roy did the right thing by holding onto the ball til late in the shotclock so that whether or not we scored, the Grizz wouldn't have a lot of time to act. Only problem is, Mayo made a great play and tipped the ball away from Roy and we ended up losing.

Exactly what kind of magic did you expect from Miller? He had 4 assts and 4 turnovers, he can't shoot, and he was a -7 while Bayless (5 assts & 1 turnover) was a +11.

Nate made the right decision. The Grizz and the refs just took the game from us. I tip my hat to all of them.

Maybe for a single first round pick in the twenties, but two? Those are some liquid assets that could be pretty easily put together to move up in the draft or to package with another player (like Blake, Rudy, etc.) to possibly be the incentive needed to complete a trade.

But you're right, it will probably be far better to keep Travis around because he's buds with Brandon and not have a clearly defined role for when he comes back, or better yet let him walk for nothing in free agency.

Hmm, I initially read it as one or the other for some reason, but they do say pickS, not A pick. I think two first rounders for Outlaw is something you have to explore for sure. Even if they are late picks. Unless KP already knows he is offering Outlaw a decent deal in free agency, and wants to keep him. If not, and he walks for nothing, it's stupid to turn this down. Especially if he might not contribute much, if anything, to us this season.
If we did that move straight up, we'd have 5 million in cap space, and Blake's 4 million dollar expiring to try to move.
