Also, again, it's not about the risk of losing "our chance at players I've never heard about". It's about the fact that the draft pick - even the 29th - is one of our more valuable assets. We could do better than a Millsap rental by packaging it on draft day - at least then, whoever we trade the pick for will be on our roster next season.
How do you know Millsap would be a rental?

Or he's saying, "I wouldn't want to spend something that is considered universally-valued NBA currency (draft picks) on a player that will either leave in the summer or require a higher salary than Dame currently receives in order to stay."

Or perhaps he's saying, "With our current cap and future tax situation, we can't afford to eschew inexpensive players and lose opportunities to benefit from the player acquisition method in which Olshey is most competent."

There are always multiple sides to every argument, and most of them have some validity.
I mean, of course it has its drawbacks, but we need two players near his level and getting him, although expensive, for the package I suggested would leave us with our most valuable players as well as future picks in order to get that 2nd (new) fringe all-star

I would hope he's a rental because I'd hate to be the team to give him his next contract. Trading for him using 1st round draft picks would be bad enough, signing him to a new contract would be even worse.

Why? Is it going to stop some other FA from coming to this hotbed? Lolol

I have never been of the mind that this team can meaningfully improve through Free Agency. But I still don't think it's wise to overpay players who don't put you in the conversation for championship contention. Someone reported that Millsap's max salary would be around $35M. Even if he took a $10M discount I wouldn't want to tie up $25M in a player who is steadily getting worse.

Finally Noel getting some more minutes and shows why we should make a move asap. The guy is a beast defensively. He can change the level of our team.

I am one who would also "sniff around" Paul Milsap. I have the feeling he is the kind of guy who will stay in good shape and keep being a player for a few more years.

Does his present game really depend on hustle? I would like to hear what BNM has to say about this.

I highly doubt he will get some kind of max $135 million deal; I think more like what Dwight Howard got, $70 million for three years. I hope Olshey is out there gathering info.

I think the Noel ship is sailing. Colangelo wised up and realized that Noel is actually a good young player.

It may have. But if it did then he is going to trade Okafor at the deadline. One of the two of Noel or Okafor is gone.

I'm sure Okafor will be very available. Personally, I wouldn't be interested in him for Portland, but maybe Olshey disagrees.

Or they just want to remind everyone how good he really is so as to boost his trade value. They play for nothing so it's possible.

I threw in offensive because I think Dame is better but if you consider the other 50% of the game, it's tough to see where Dame has so much of an offensive advantage to negate the defensive gap.

Lillard - 26.8 ppg, 4.5 rebs, 6.3 assts, 0.8 stls, 2.7 TOs. Shoots .455 FG%, .355 3Pt% and .893 from the FT line where he gets 7.7 FTA per game.
Butler - 25.5 ppg, 6.8 rebs, 4.5 assts, 1.7 stls, 2.1 TOs. Shoots .456 FG%, .336 3Pt% and .880 from the FT line where he gets 9.5 FTA per game.

Points are very similar, Butler gets significantly more rebounds, Dame significantly more assist. Butler doubles up on steals, they shoot almost identical numbers from the field, Dame is just a touch higher from '3' (I thought that would be bigger) and they are close at the line but Butler gets there about 20% more often.

So it is quite close offensively but when you consider the defensive impact, I think that is where Butler separates himself.
Butler gets 4.5 assists at the SF position with Rondo and Wade at the guards. Thibs used to talk about playing him some at PG, but that's a little bit of a stretch.

At SG, he's typically bigger and stronger than his defender. He's excellent in the post, that's a lot of the fouls he draws.

Agreed. If it was one or the other then maybe. But both having to give up a lot to get him and then also break the bank to pay him is just too much to do.

What bank? We'd have to send out about 20m in salary just to acquire him, so we'd only be adding 10m or so after his extension, and we're probably going to shed Crabbes contract at some point as well.

He is going to get 35 MIL a year. We are at the luxury tax threshold. So closer to 14 (not 10) MIL is a huge deal. You are banking on trading Crabbe for only expiring contracts (because if you took back a player who wasn't in the final year of his deal in this fantasy trade then you are no closer to out of the tax)? That isn't happening.

I look at it like this; Id rather spend 30-35m per on Millsap than spend 30-35m per on Crabbe, Leonard, and Davis/Ezeli.

We all would--it's just going to be nearly impossible to dump all those contracts for just expirings. It might be possible if Portland packaged first round picks with them, but then they're left with little trade ammunition to get Milsap.

We're going to need to match salaries in this theoretical Millsap trade and I think they'd be interested in Leonard, and we could throw in Ezelis contract as well which shouldn't be an issue for them.

That leaves Crabbe, but I think his contract looks a lot better as a starter, and I definitely feel he is a starting caliber player that would interest a lot of teams.

Well, we're definitely going have to agree to disagree on how attractive those players will be to Atlanta and other teams in general. I hope you're right.
