Re: 2pm KP and Larry Miller Press Conference

I haven't heard or seen the press conference, only the quotes given here, so maybe I'm missing a lot of tone and facial expressions - but the quotes themselves don't seem particularly alarming.

As for why they haven't come out and said "KP is staying": because they don't have him under contract. If they say KP is staying, that strengthens LeGarie's hand in negotiating KPs next contract, and quite clearly, LeGarie is someone who will use whatever leverage he is given.

Way worse to hear the tone of his voice, fwiw

Re: 2pm KP and Larry Miller Press Conference

The Blazers overpaid for Roy. The Blazers overpaid for Aldridge.

And they were talking to Camby about an extension?

I really like KP and am glad he's the Blazers' GM, but if there's a financial side that he's ignoring--if HE is responsible for giving Aldridge and Roy so much money over the objections of the people who actually sign the checks--then I can understand why his bosses would be upset.

I believed (and still do) that there will be a very limited number of teams that would be willing and able to give Roy and Aldridge large contracts this summer, and probably even fewer NEXT summer after the CBA is reworked. The Blazers paid both of those guys consistently with the current (expiring) CBA and have cost Paul Allen and his company tens of millions of dollars.

If Paul Allen was fine with that, then it's just annoying to me because it makes those two guys all but unmovable down the line. If Paul Allen was NOT fine with it, and KP was the reason that those extensions were doled out, then (unfortunately) he might have to pay the price.

Re: 2pm KP and Larry Miller Press Conference

There was a lot of bitching about how the Roy deal got dragged out and caused some ill will with Roy...so it wasn't all peaches and cream...the beauty of the Vulcans for the last few years has been that they were mostly ceding control of the basketball side to KP...now they've castrated him, which means bad decisions to come...

I don't seee any ill will from Brandon ever since he got the max. (And even Roy's ill will was never close to calling management backstabbers.)

So how exactly do you know that Vulcans (who did hire KP, that was a good move right?) gave control of the basketball side to KP and now have taken it away?

It seems everytime a writer writes a bad rumor about KP, everyone calls the writer and the rumor garbage. But any bad rumor about Vulcan is legit? I haven't heard that rumor yet, which writer is saying management gave and took away power from KP?

If Paul was not fine with it, it is hard to believe it would have happened. Paul isn't exactly known for being out of the loop.

Re: 2pm KP and Larry Miller Press Conference

exactly..these vulcan fucks dont know shit about basketball but are calling the shots

Keep in mind Paul Allen is the High Priest of the Vulcans, he doesn't know shit about basketball, and he calls all the shots.

As I've said all season, he's dying and has thrown out his rebuild promise for a sadly desperate shot at the single title that has always eluded him.

Come on Ed, very few players are unmovable and these two hardly fit that criteria

Re: 2pm KP and Larry Miller Press Conference

i dont see how we overpaid for roy...you can argue aldridge, but roy? not buying it

Re: 2pm KP and Larry Miller Press Conference

To me this seems like a Hail Mary for Pritchard's future here. The firing of TP brought a bunch of issues to a head. It probably seemed clear to them that KP was essentially gone and they decided to take it public to try and mobilize public support as a last ditch attempt to pressure the Vulcans publicly.

Unfortunately, I believe you're 100% correct.

It doesn't matter what the team pays salary-wise if it is a big market.

All Portland could offer was the max. The big money (product endorsements) doesn't come to players on hick teams. Roy is either very loyal or can't do the math.

LA can offer the minimum and untold millions in potential endorsements (besides, Roy would still take it to play with his hero the anal-rapist).

Stopped reading right there. Do you live in Portland?

EDIT - hmm ... I see you live in Seattle ... heh

god, I'm getting a bad feeling...almost like they are going to "liquidate" and move to Seattle.

Under the current collective bargaining agreement, sure.

What if there's a $50m hard cap implemented, with grandfathered salaries but phased in over five years?

No teams COULD take on a $10m or $13m contract, even if they wanted to.

Will the CBA be that restrictive? Probably not. But the Blazers, by extending the players without accounting for the likelihood that there will be a significant change, are setting themselves up to have been painted into a serious corner. And... for what?

I've lived in Portland for about six months of my life... so what?

Are you saying that people in Seattle are less able to understand the CBA and how it changing might impact how much a player should be paid?

Or are you conceding that people in Portland are less able to do so?

Well, if that's the case, I certainly don't mind having U-25 players like Roy and Aldridge locked up. Even with that, from what I've read, the owners are pushing to have all current contracts voided in the new CBA. That should make this summer VERY interesting considering the FA class, eh?

So, what's your point?

Re: 2pm KP and Larry Miller Press Conference

Did I miss something?

lol

I started posting this earlier today. It's a Vulcan/PA plan to bring the team to Seattle. I said it tongue-in-cheek ... or did I?

Re: 2pm KP and Larry Miller Press Conference

The way I see it, Allen and Vulcan created this mess by firing Penn in midseason without providing any substantive reason for the firing. The problem was exacerbated by KP's and Penn's agent mouthing off to the press. At this point, it would seem to me that the worst way forward is for KP to be left hanging for the rest of the season. It places an unnecessary distraction on the rest of this season and messes with the team's positioning for the draft and with player negotiations. It seems to me that there are 3 reasonable ways forward:

1. KP gets a vote of confidence from Paul Allen and gets a contract extension.
2. KP gets the axe and a new GM is put in place before the draft.
3. KP gets demoted to Penn's position and a new GM is brought in this summer.

Unfortunately, we're dealing with the Vulcans so I'd expect them to do the worst thing and just leave this thing hanging. That seems consistent with what KP and Miller had to say about him being evaluated after the end of the season.

just a weird feeling the way this team is going.

KP might be gone, then the rest of the puzzle crumbles....fanbase is enraged, wallow in mediocrity, stay "lean and profitable" (i.e. no championship windows) until people stop belieiving then they pack up and move to Seattle in a few years and become the Sonics again with Roy coming back to SEA next to Oden who is doing well again.

Those are hardly "reasonable."

Re: 2pm KP and Larry Miller Press Conference

Those are hardly "reasonable."

Perhaps not from KP's standpoint. They are reasonable options in terms of putting this issue to bed so it isn't a constant distraction. Paul Allen is entitled to have whomever he wants running the team.

I did read your post. You didn't mention that the owners wanted to have all current contracts potentially voided in their latest proposal. Your post didn't make sense to me without adding that alleged part of the new CBA. I don't see a grandfather clause being possible in the new agreement, at least from what I've read about the negotiations.

Silence speaks loudly, doesn't it?

Re: 2pm KP and Larry Miller Press Conference

Perhaps not from KP's standpoint.

That eliminates option 3 then. Pritchard would have to agree to accepting a demotion and taking on Penn's job.

That seems so remote as to not be worth considering.

All that still doesn't get them out of the RG lease.

Re: 2pm KP and Larry Miller Press Conference

over/under on kp and allen sitting courtside together, the rest of the year?
