Re: Marc Stein: Blazers in talks with Camby about extension now!!!

I like the Camby acquisition and really appreciate what he brings, but I think this was a bad move.

Why? Because it was an extension, and extensions on veterans are almost always a bad idea.

What NBA team would offer him more than the MLE this summer? Does anyone really think that he's going to get a $10m/year offer from any NBA team, even with the salary cap higher than expected?

There will only be a few teams under the cap more than the MLE, and presumably they will have bigger fish to fry than signing a 36 year-old Marcus Camby.

If we had traded for Miller last year and he did well, would it have been wise to lock him up with a big extension?

Ed O.

Does anybody have an actual list of free agents and teams with cap room?

My impression was that there were going to be a number of teams with cap space chasing a pretty limited number of stars (Wade/LeBron/Bosh). If that's true, odds are that Camby was going to wind up as somebody's consolation prize, with a $20 mil deal on some other team.

Re: Marc Stein: Blazers in talks with Camby about extension now!!!

i agree maxie...

i think camby starts off the year as starter like blake did but oden (if and its a huge if can sty healthy) starts by thanksgiving and camby comes off bench as main backup to oden and la

oden if healthy makes them a deadly trio

Re: Marc Stein: Blazers in talks with Camby about extension now!!!

I'd say the years are more important than the dollar amount, honestly. In an offseason with plenty of teams with a lot of cap space, I think it's worth a little extra to not have to negotiate against anyone but yourself.

He likely wouldn't have gotten 10 a year, but I think it's very reasonable for a team like OKC or NY to offer him more than the MLE. So going above that to not have to bid against them is worth it. It also gives the front office an easier opportunity to plan for the offseason, knowing that one obstacle is out of the way. I prefer that than coming up with scenarios starting with IF we sign Camby.

OKC with Camby would be scary good. Part of overpaying Camby now is to keep him away from OKC, in my opinion. Don't let Camby be wooed in free agency; OKC is much closer to Houston than we are.

Re: Marc Stein: Blazers in talks with Camby about extension now!!!

Where did you hear this bit of information?

Per Storyteller on Blazersedge, the most they can offer Camby is around $21.5 for the two years

With so many teams with so much cap-room and a dearth of quality big men after Bosh and Boozer I fully expect Camby could have expected a 10 million per year payday for 2 or 3 years. The Blazers might be overpaying a touch, but I also think for just two years there's really no such thing as a bad deal in this situation -- worst case scenario he becomes a 12 million dollar expiring contract in another year.

I agree that part of the overpayment is to ensure the other Wester Conference Teams don't get him

Off hand without consulting any lists I can name a few with enough for at least one max player:
Knicks
Nets
Bulls
Clippers
Heat
Thunder
T-wolves

Dang. I didn't realize the list was that long. The Heat probably use theirs up to get Wade back. The Clippers will probably fuck up their cap room somehow, because they are the Clippers and that's what they do. But still.

Camby was headed for a big payday. I'm glad we're the team that gave it to him.

Camby agrees to 2 yr 25million dollar extension

Just announced it on 95.5FM

Great news!

I read that the higher-than-expected salary cap means the Heat can sign an expensive free agent on top of re-signing Wade.

just be happy the thunder didnt get him. they would be instant contenders with his defense and durants scoring. scary

Breaking news: Blazers working to extend Marcus Camby
April 19th, 2010 by Dwight Jaynes | 9 Comments | Filed in NBA, Trail Blazers

The Portland Trail Blazers have reached an agreement on a contract extension for free-agent-to-be center Marcus Camby, according to a source within the NBA.

It is believed Portland will give Camby two years at a total of $25 million and an announcement could be expected as soon as Monday afternoon.

The deal is awaiting league approval and earlier today, the NBA had a problem with a couple of clauses in the deal and it’s being dealt with by the parties at this time.

Yeah, let's lock him up-Paul has the $$, and keep him away from OKC. I think this elevates our contender status for next year 10 fold.

I believe 25 is too high, under the CBA.

Max raise on an extension, I believe is 10% of the previous season. Which would take him to a starting salary of 10,065,000. Max raise is 10%, or 1,006,500 raise, or 11,071,500 for the second year, equalling a 2 year deal a little over 21 million. Who knows. Maybe his current contract number is off, or a bonus on there means his extension can be higher.

My first reaction was total elation, and after letting it settle in for a little bit, I'm still pretty happy with the signing, but it really makes me wonder what they're long term plans are at the position. At the very least I think this pretty much guaranteed Joel gets moved over the summer or at the latest before next year's trade deadline, assuming he comes back and shows that he's able to still play at a reasonably high level he becomes a trade piece with far more value than just the cost of his expiring contract ... it's going to be very interesting to see what this roster looks like a year from now.

I take it that you aren't wild about this deal?

I'm being a smartass! Camby has been great and I'm glad we wrapped him up! It just kinda reminds me of the Theo situation. Just saw him in the lobby.......... shoulda' asked him to buy me lunch!

This is exactly right. A great "permanent" acquisition for the Blazers, but an epic cock block as well.

Interesting. Does it mean that an extension for KP is on the way?

Time to get your camby jerseys now!

Actually, that was the only thing holding me back. I wanted to get a Camby jersey earlier this year, but the only thing stopping me is he might be a couple of month Blazer only.

2 years $25 million is outrageous. Better not be that.

2 years $21 miliion is high, but going in the right direction.

3 years $21 million, with 3rd year a team option (the Andre Miller deal) is what it should be. Fingers crossed.

Funny. I'm the opposite: didn't really care for it at first, but now I guess I can see why it makes sense.

No. It's common knowledge that Mark Warkentien orchestrated that Travis+Blake for Camby swap by dumping Camby on the Clips for a second round pick two years ago ... yes, Mark Warkentien is THAT good!

Great news! I'm glad the Blazer brass realizes we need a shit ton of centers in Portland because they always seem to get hurt. Hopefully we can sign about 3 more big men before training camp. Then if we can get 15 games out of each guy we should be set! Just use two at a time and keep the others in bubble wrap until called upon. Lets keep Greg in cold storage until the playoffs.

Even if he's not a dominant 1 on 1 post defender, I just like the way Camby makes this team instantly smarter on the defensive end of the court with his ability to read, react and direct ... and I think Nic, Greg and LMA will all benefit greatly from being able to play alongside a guy like that for at least the next two years.

While it might be high, really, what difference does it make? 2-21, 2-25, or 2-15. We're over the cap, close to the LT, and not getting under the cap anytime soon. The extra 2-4 a year doesn't have a negative effect on any flexibility we may have. It does, however, provide us with a bigger expiring contract trade asset, if needed.

It's 2 years 21 million with 4 million in incentives according to the Oregonian.
