Re: Official Rudy Got Screwed Thread

He WAS a replacement for Rudy Gay!!! WTF!!!!

Actually, JR Smith was the replacement for Rudy Gay. Rudy Fernandez was voted in by the fans (in a contest with Joe Alexander and Russell Westbrook). But thanks for playing.

um... Rudy was a part of the 3 way vote for the 4th guy going to be in the dunk contest between Rudy, Westbrook and Alexander. Rudy ended up winning the vote.

JR Smith was the replacement for Rudy Gay.

Re: Official Rudy Got Screwed Thread

And on top of that, when the foul is called, the whistle stops the clock.

Re: Official Rudy Got Screwed Thread

The problem with Rudy Fernandez in the contest is that he didn't have any "great dunks".

His first dunk was good, but pretty much any of the non-short dunkers could have done it pretty easily.

His second dunk was nice, but he ran out of time there. They got done ripping Nate Robinson and Birdman prior to the contest, so repeated attempts weren't going to go over well. And it didn't help that Rudy was looking pretty poor in his attempts too. Yes, Gasol's passes weren't perfect, but Rudy wasn't gaining any semblance of control over the ball on that. If you land it on the first attempt, it has a wow factor. When you see a guy pathetically miss it 8 times in a row, there's no wow factor.

I agree, that Nate Robinson's dunk deserved a bit lower score, but so did Rudy Fernandez on his last dunk, os that should have washed it out. I don't remember the scores, but maybe that gets JR Smith in the finals, and changes the entire component of the finals.

And the off the back dunk isn't too hard. A kid did that during our 8th grade pep rally game, in game, and he has no where near the leaping ability of Nate Robinson. But what made Nate's dunk a little more difficult, is that Chandler was turned differently than usual. Usually their head is in line with the basket, giving the player more of a runway to leap off of, and a straighter area for the foot to be. Instead, Chandler was turned sideways, putting the curves on the sides into play...which did come into play on the first attempt.

Overall, the dunk contest was a let down. Nate Robinson did well in the Finals, but Dwight Howard was a big let down.

Nope, Rudy was the replacement. You guys got it wrong. Bleacher report? Please.

Wow you are slow. Do you not recall the national advertisements for Westbrook, Alexander and Fernandez that started running in December? The announcement of the four participants clearly read along the lines of:

Participating in the dunk contest is 2008 champion Dwight Howard, 2006 champion Nate Robinson, 2008 participant Rudy Gay and for the first time ever selected from fan voting one of Russell Westbrook of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Joe Alexander of the Milwaukee Bucks, or Rudy Fernandez of the Portland Trailblazers. Voting ends at such and such a date.

They had multiple commercials for all of them.

JR Smith was not in the field until Rudy Gay pulled out a week and a half ago due to a hip flexor.

Christ man.

Re: Official Rudy Got Screwed Thread

Actually, you have it wrong. But I wouldn't expect anything less from you.

Here is the NBA.com page showing the original dunk contestants. Rudy Gay, Dwight Howard and Nate Robinson. :dunno: Are you just being dense purposely?

Re: Official Rudy Got Screwed Thread

FWIW, TNT corrected themselves, and said JR Smith was the replacement a little later.

Re: Official Rudy Got Screwed Thread

You guys are just sore that Rudy soiled the dunk contest and Oden soiled the rookie game.

You didn't even bother to click the link, did you?

Re: Official Rudy Got Screwed Thread

Rudy's dunk behind the backboard was sick! he got robbed for that one at least... just like Iguodala did back in 06

It really wasn't that special. Someone did that in the HORSE contest earlier, with the bounce on the one side of the backboard and then layup on the other side of the rim. I think it only looked so hard because Rudy had so much difficulty with it. Someone with better hand strength/size would have had a lot easier time doing that.

It's not that hard... someone did it in the horse contest ... but it was a layup

Jesus wept

Re: Official Rudy Got Screwed Thread

Aiyah, I can't believe I just read through all 7 pages of this thread . . . wish I could have that time added back onto my life but whatever.

I figured Rudy had no chance going into this and I was pleased to see that he fared well for himself. He did better than I thought but he wasn't going to win this thing anyway you look at it; it just wasn't going to happen. This was a showcase for Nate v. Howard and it should've just started and ended with the two of them. Interpret that however you want.

Re: Official Rudy Got Screwed Thread

I'm just glad we have Rudy Fernandez on our team. I don't care about what judges think of his dunking ability; he puts points in people's faces.

That's only because they weren't allowed to dunk in that contest. Kevin Durant could have dunked it effortlessly on that one. I don't think Johnson and Mayo could have dunked it though.

Re: Official Rudy Got Screwed Thread

Hey everyone, let's all go crap in the Bull's forum for awhile.

Re: Official Rudy Got Screwed Thread

rudy's first dunk was pretty good and got the worse score of all the first dunks and his second dunk was really good but understandably got a low score because it took so many attempts to get it.

i just want to know what happened to him alleyooping it to himself by doing a rainbow(soccer move)? that would have been awesome.

There was supposed to be no penalty for taking multiple attempts. The rule was that each player was give 2 mins per dunk, and 2 tries immediately after.

Rudy mentioned that he was saving the rainbow kick dunk for the next round.

Re: Official Rudy Got Screwed Thread

This is a subjective event. I can't stand subjective scoring, but it's more of a show than a competition. It was fun to see Rudy there, as well as each of the other guys that competed in it. I think only us and Spain knew what was going on with that Martin jersey until they explained it.

It was kind of interesting to see Phoenix fans booing their own legends, though. I wonder if we'd boo Drexler or Kersey over JR Smith's scores if we had held a dunk contest. I like Dave's argument at Blazer's Edge. If you're going to penalize a player for taking too many attempts, then don't give Dwight Howard a 50 after five attempts or so on his first dunk. And I'll add, don't give Nate Robinson 8's and 9's for a dunk that we all did in junior high. After he missed the first time and I saw what he was going to do I thought, "Nah, he's just playing with us. That isn't going to be his dunk." It was fun to see "Kryptonate" though.

he should have use it in the first because honestly, he had no shot at making it past the first round unless he did something incredible or jr smith and nate robinson simply didn't make their dunks.

and it doesn't matter if there was supposed to be a penalty or not. there almost always is a penalty especially when the dunk is actually attempted and missed(as rudy did several times). when guys just mess up the pass but don't actually attempt the dunk, the judges seem to not really count off at all, but when there are actual missed dunks, generally they do.

The how did Dwight miss 6 times and get a 50?

So, you advocate the subjective way the judges/NBA run the contest? What's the point of having written rules if no one follows them?

There are no written rules on how dunks are supposed to be judged. There's just rules to how long a player has to complete a dunk.

Define trolling barfo.
I only got this.

Who was patroling or rambling? I'm confused on the usage of this slang. Enlighten me. :)

I do think Rudy's dunk off the backboard in the rear was tricky timing. It showed creativeness and a different form of technical challenge than the normal frontal attack on the basket. I did hear several fans booing the judges when they gave him those 8's and 9s. Yes it did take several attempts but Gasol could have been off with timing too.

i said generally actual missed dunks count points off. obviously, there are exceptions and dwight was one of those(because it was pretty clear that he was going to make the finals all along).

all i did was state how it is, not how i think it should be.
