My theory is one of the reasons for this change, is to build up the TV Market in Seattle, I believe the Blazers will work an agreement with Seattle based Root TV, and bring on Kevin Calabro. He was the voice of the Sonics, and well beloved. Seattle fans do not have the live game access we have in Portland, and basically watch on TV. This gives them more of a local flavor for them..

The Blazers probably feel this is there best chance to build TV ratings, since Seattle has no team. Prediction: Seattle based, Root Sports gets the Blazers, Seattle’s Calabro, gets Barrets job.

Calabro is solid too

If mcgowan is very motivated to bring in people we can connect to, former player?

Is drexler available or under contract with houston?

Brandon roy? :D

Bill walton?

Anyone else?
Drexler is God awful
Fuck no for Roy..Maybe he can call T Wolves games
You know my thoughts on Bill already

Highlights of the McGowan interview on 1080 The Fan.

1080: Surprising decision to say the least. A lot of fans are rather outraged....what is the message to the fanbase?

CM: Obviously I see the comments and understand there are a lot of fans that are upset. Hopefully our fans will bear with us and hopefully they will be excited with the replacements.

1080: In a season of passing expectations on the court, why this?

CM: Fans want answers but out of respect to those we let go I'm not going to get into that . I don't think it would be fair to talk about publicly. They all did a lot of great things for our organization but hopefully our fans understand when we let them know what we are doing going forward.

1080: Did this catch the 3 of them off guard?

CM: I'm sure it did. We are trying to do this in a compassionate manner but we are making a transition and we have to focus on that as well. You are talking about their lives and livelyhood and it is not easy and certainly not the fun part of the job.

1080: When you look the future, any specifics in what you are looking for?

CM: Not at this time. Once we make announcements on who we are bringing in I think it will be pretty clear as to why. It's not a lot about what they did or didn't do but more about the direction we are going in moving forward.

We are going through a broader transition with out broadcasts and it forced me to look at the creative parts of our broadcasts and started looking at it over the course of the season. It is ultimately me who makes the decisions but I spoke with others to get feedback and council.

1080: This sounds like you know who you are going to talk to.

CM: Yeah....you would never do something this drastic without knowing where you want to go. This is pretty unprecedented and we'll have some announcements pretty soon.

1080: We couldn't help but come to the conclusion that there is more to this.

CM: From a broader perspective it is. It just forced me to look at it even more closely but it was really more from a creative standpoint.

1080: Because you just signed these guys, people jump to conclusions.

CM: Sure....but then to you wait a year or give them a year to look while they are still getting paid? This gives them a soft landing and the best chance to see what their best move is without a financial impact.

We should have the entire team in place within a month or maybe even before that.

1080: Obviously a ton of tweets and your name was in a lot of these. (reads tweets....) What do you say to those that feel alienated?

CM: Just work really hard to earn their trust back again. I understand my role won't always be the most popular one but I am motivated to bring in people they can connect with. I do operate with a keen awareness that fans are fired up and that motivates me to do a good job to prove this will be good in the long run.

(Not exact....typed as fast as I could without it coming out looking like a foreign language.)

Damn it's pretty clear he feels confident on who he's bringing in. You can tell he can't wait to announce the new guys. This might be a good thing..

I'm fine with that as long as Seattle doesn't steal the Blazers from us haha

No surprised they got rid of Rice but Barrett really surprises me. He was an UNBELIAVABLE homer when he first started but had developed into a decent play by play guy. I wonder how much input from newer fans had much to do with this move. A lot transplants I've met hated the pair. But us longtime fans would just say, "Oh that's just Mike and Mike! Anyway, it will be weird to watch games without them.

I think they recognize The Brand that is Lillard. All star, all NBA, good guy, loyal, great at selling shoes/insurance/appliances and a legit bad ass rapper. I really think the Blazers are going to get, I don't know how to say it, cooler and youngered up? They have to address change or they get left behind. What if this shiny new announcing team and an internationally popular star makes Portland look like a "large" market because of that popularity and advertising opportunities?

If Mcgowan botches this next hire (which he will), he should be fired. He's fucking everything up.

What is everything though? Rose Garden to the Moda Center? That is about the only thing I know of. I'm asking.

So, I just spent an hour on the road tuned into Travis and the interview he got with Chris. I did not listen to the one at 2:45 or the first one. after listening to them, I am swayed a bit.
Yes it is disappointing, but these guys have had their time here. It would be nice to have a final goodbye game, but I also understand Chris when he says he doesn't like making decisions during the season when emotions run high. Makes sense and is logical to me. Assess the season, the long term direction they are trying to take the team and upgrade the broadcasting to match that direction.

I LOVE Mike and Mike, but I am willing to bet , they also understand it is a business and nothing lasts forever and they had a good stint here.

The real key is how the Blazers move forward.

Might be a smart business move on some level, but part of me says "fuck that, we don't want Sonics leftovers and we don't need to cater to them." Maybe that's just me.

I live near Seattle and we had nearly every Blazer game on Comcast up here already. I hope whatever new deal is struck can still be something I can still watch up here. They need to get the dish stuff sorted out first though. My dad who lives in the Willamette Valley can only watch games that are on KGW, which is pretty shitty, because where he lives cable is not an option even if he wanted it.

Depends on who they get..... the ENTIRE WORLD views Portland as small and provincial. It's like one of those unwritten truths the fabric the the country is written on. What are they supposed to say?

"I ran into Fred Armisten at Voodoo Donuts the other day and Gus Van Zant was there...."

Fuck Seattle fans too

The entire world sees San Antonio as a "large" market. If we keep winning I'm hoping we can be SA lite.

I'm wondering the same. I keep reading how awful he is, and what terrible things he has done. And I know of no "bad" thing other than stadium naming. Would love to hear more. The whining over this just sounds a lot to me like the whining of a lot of long time Portlanders over their city growing, and them not willing to accept it. Like the people that live near Division on the east side and cry about lack of parking. Like their home was so much better when it was just run down store fronts and porn theaters there.

But it was.

I would have no problem with Calabro. He's a great commentator. If that's the plan then I understand why they did it, but I'm still not too thrilled.

I'd love to see Monty Williams doing Rice's job...he's got a lot of kids, single dad and just gave up an assistant coaching job. He's in a position where coming home to Portland and raising his family might be appealing.

I wonder if they asked Rice to go back to radio with Wheels but he declined.
