Hoping, IF we get a team, it’s a better name than something like “Pioneers” or something else lame...

I think we should just name the team Doug. Not the Portland Doug or the Oregon Doug. Just Doug. We could claim it's short for Douglass Fir, but I just want to look at the standings and be able to quickly pick out my team:

Seattle Mariners
Doug
San Francisco Giants
Oakland A's

See how it jumps out.

I also want to be able to go to the games and cheer "Go Doug!".

Sometimes there is elegance in simplicity.

Terrible idea...for personal reasons!
Like "Fir" better.
See how fir that ball went?

Maybe we can take naming rights one step further and name the team after a sponsor.

The Portland Honey Buckets

Would Evan Turner be the mascot?

What about the Portland Tanks? We have Camp Withocomb and Camp Rilea nearby for the military tie in and think of the headlines when the team wants to purposely lose games.

Why not Portland Sucks? It works great as a chant, a headline, and a team name.

One man stood in the way of it happening back then, - Ted Fucking Kulongoski. The asshole ran on a pro jobs ticket and then less than 2 months after taking office, absolutely refused to even talk to the Grand Ronde tribe who was offering to build a stadium and give it to the state in exchange for being allowed to build in operate a casino in the Portland metropolitan area. The fucker flat out lied when he promised his number 1 priority was to help create more jobs in Oregon. Major league baseball and a casino would have both brought hundreds of direct and indirect jobs to the area. And it would not have cost one penny. He just flat out refused to even meet with them.

Yeah.... I didn't then and even now don't want a casino in the middle of my city.

Casino jobs suck too. They're low paying jobs.

But there are also the associated construction jobs, which would have been high playing jobs at a time when Oregon's economy was in the toilet due to the post Y2K tech slump. It would also increased tourism, and tourists stay in hotels, eat in restaurants, shop in stores, etc. while they are here which brings is a lot of out of state dollars. Plus, we would have gotten a free baseball stadium and a major league team. Again more high paying construction jobs and tourism dollars.

Also, as Jaynes mentioned it may have helped create a large hotel in the Rose Quarter, which would have led to more convention business (possibly even hosting the NBA all star weekend).

I don't personally gamble, but I do go to Vegas for an occasional 4-day weekend to stay at a nice hotel, eat in some nice restaurants and take in some shows. In those cases, Nevada, not Oregon, gets my tourism dollars. And, that's just little old me...

My grandpa always told me, "any job is a good job". It's something I've lived by in my young adult life and I've never been unemployed for more than a month or two.

IDK much about that whole casino near Portland campaign, but it wasn't planned inside city limits I thought, just nearer the population base?

You're grandpa taught you well! Props to you!

Sorry. Not swayed. I don't want a casino in the middle of my city and most polled agreed.

Please don't act like a casino here would make you not take your trip to Vegas. People don't only go there to gamble, it's the entire experience.

Otherwise Spirit Mountain would get your tourism dollars.

Sorry, I don't want my kid working in a casino ever. Especially for beans.

It's like you and @Boob-No-More forgot we voted measure 82 DOWN with over 71% of the vote. We said no to "The Grange". Portlanders by an overwhelming majority don't want a private casino inside of city limits. Nor did we want to amend our constitution to do it.

I gotta agree with Dviss. Although I know the state loves the income, I've had a good friend who's a recovering gambling addict. The law allows that certain establishments should be able to have gambling. But those 500 foot "CIGARETTE STORES" that have zero lighting, one ATM machine and a circle of poker machines that steadily establish long term addiction. They are no different than turn of the century "sporting establishments" that kept a kitchen and a hot plate so that patrons could drink themselves to death. I've got no problem with Spirit Mountain Casino drawing retired boomers to play the slots off of Highway 18 on the way to the coast. But a major casino within city limits is just asking for trouble.

In terms of catering to gambling addiction, is it really all that different from the myriad video poker machines that can already be found throughout the city?

An addict will drive a few miles
An addict will find a way to feed their addiction.

Like keeping food out of a refrigerator for a food addict. They will just drive to taco bell

Not to mention the billion video poker machines and countless stores to play sports action within the city limits already

That’s what gets me. I can understand the moral value of saying no to a casino but come on then you have the poker machines and shit all over the city anyways

You've voted for several. Swifts, Hops, Meadowlarks... Make up your mind, dude!
Portland Meadowlarks 'sounds' better than Portland Chinooks (which sounds terrible to my ears) or Portland Osprey (there are going to be a lot of people in other parts of the country who don't even know what the hell that is).

Actually, Spirit Mountain doesn't/wouldn't because they only attract 3rd and 4th rate acts. I would think/hope if we had a bigger casino in the Portland Metro area we'd be able to actually attract some acts I'd be willing to pay money top see.

Most people that don't know Portland well think of logging

The ones I've talked anyway

I go to Vegas 4 times a year for conferences. (3-4 days at a time staying in a Casino)
Each time I throw 2 bucks into a slot machine. That's it.

I voted for the legalization of Pot, but I only smoke a joint about once or twice a year.

I go to a bar a couple of times a week for a drink, but wait until getting home before having that 2nd or 3rd glass.

I get that I am lucky not to have the "addictive gene" and I feel sorry for those who do. But I also don't believe the answer is making things harder to get.
In the end people are smart about things or they aren't.
