Sometimes genius comes in weird, damaged and unlikely packages. That was Ian Dury.

Just happened on this on YouTube today by accident... I was watching Drive by Incubus but it had an Oreo Cookie commercial with Hypnotize by Notorious BIG... so, obviously, I had to go watch that video. Then this one shows up on the suggestions, never heard of this guy Raphael Saadiq but have been a big fan of D'Angelo since the 90s so I gave it a listen. I'm probably the only one who's never heard of this guy but this music is SEXY!

Damn shame you dont' know who Raphael Saadiq. He's a musical Genius.

I bought my first The National album recently (their most recent). I like it. Anyone want to nominate their best album?

I think if you could boil down the essence of raw soul in hard rock into one voice it would be Paul Rodgers. There is a reason Freddie Mercury worshiped the guy. Nobody has ever equaled that smokey voice box. And they will probably never put him in the HOF which is kind of sad.

Don't forget that Paul Kossoff was a fucking AMAZING guitarist (whose father toured English schools preaching about the dangers of drugs after his son OD'd). "All Right Now" is an immortal riff. Here's one of Free's less rocky numbers of which I am nonetheless fond:

Yeah. I was really obsessed with that guitar tone he had. Listened to nothing but Free for a period of about six to eight months when I was young. I think they were sloppy at times but miles better than Led Zeppelin. Kossoff's secret was he kept an unwound banjo string for his G string and then used a ton of vibrato. He was up there with Roy Buchanan when it came to feel.
