Nate nearly shut down

BY FRANK ISOLA
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

Nate Robinson had become such a nuisance for Larry Brown that the coach considered sending him to the Developmental League last month to work on his game and improve his attitude.

According to a source close to Robinson, Brown wanted to demote Robinson to the NBA's minor league rather than keep him on the inactive list. Brown broached the idea with Isiah Thomas, but Thomas felt that Robinson would benefit from practicing with veteran teammates.

Robinson spent eight games on the inactive list from Feb. 24 through March 11. The decision to deactivate Robinson came one game after the rookie guard won the slam dunk title during All-Star Weekend in Houston, which raises the possibility that Brown was sending Robinson a message.

Robinson has appeared in the last 11 games and has started the last two. He scored a career-high 34 points in Friday's loss to Philadelphia and was criticized by Brown for showboating throughout the game.

On Sunday, Robinson said he felt "awkward" trying to conform to Brown's wishes of being less demonstrative. Robinson shot 4-for-12 and scored 10 points with three turnovers during the Knicks' 114-95 loss in Philadelphia. "I was not doing some of the things like I do, like getting my teammates hyped," Robinson said on Sunday. "I felt if I did that, Coach would be mad at me."

Brown is an old-school coach who believes rookies should be seen and not heard.

Robinson's aggressive style has been embraced by fans, who admire a 5-8 player who can challenge the league's tallest players for rebounds. But the talkative Robinson has gotten himself into a few minor skirmishes with several teammates, including Jerome James and Malik Rose. During the preseason, Robinson and James nearly came to blows and Robinson was ready to use a broom handle as a weapon. He and Rose got into a heated argument in the shower after a game.

In December, Brown reprimanded Robinson for acting disorderly on the bus ride to the team plane in Atlanta. According to a source, Robinson was shooting spit balls. The following day, Robinson was on the inactive list and the Knicks announced that he was home with a stomach virus.

In recent weeks, Brown complimented Robinson for working harder in practice and felt Robinson was showing progress. But after Friday's game, Brown criticized Robinson for showboating when the player he was guarding, Allen Iverson, scored 47 points.

Assuming Brown returns to coach next season, Robinson is a prime candidate to be traded. The Knicks have an abundance of guards and Brown isn't convinced that Robinson, Stephon Marbury or Steve Francis is suited to be the full-time point guard.</div>

This New York drama gets better and funnier everyday.

if brown doesnt like nate, the sixers and lakers will be glad to take him from you guys

I'd pay to see that.

Im getting pissed at Larry, like I dont understand him right now. You should congradulate Nate for being the only sense of enthusiasm and only real spark. We need someone to run around and showboat a little because it gets the teammates up and fans alike, including me.

Nate Robinson, unlike others on the roster, gives 110% effort every game and even though he can get wild at times, a lot of that has to do with the fact he's a rookie playing in MSG. I remember Brown specifically saying the guys who play hardest will play. What excuses does he have for playing Taylor and Rose over Lee and Robinson? Seriously, Brown's terrible coaching this year is a maor reason for this dissapointing season. Now that we won't even make the playoffs why is it that the vets are still getting more minutes than the young guys, our franchise's future?

im guessing robinson isnt a future part of that team if brown doesnt want him even though i swore i read befor that brown said next year he wants crawford or robinson to be the pgs

That's funny.

i really like Nates game, and he gives it his very best.

Larry Brown and Isiash Thomas are really hurtng the Knicks, I hate to say this but Larry Brown should be fired. Making more than any other coach and the worst record on the league.

Yup. But first, please get rid of Isiah please.

You're a raptors fan...if anything, you want Isiah to be GM of the Knicks forever.

lol Nate with a broom...funny stuff. And a heated arguement in the shower with Malik Rose? awkward

lmao, no thanks. We're good with Brian Colangelo

Your situation is painful to watch, regardless of what team I root for. Nobody should have to go through that. Plus I just plain don't like Isiah, since he bolted on us.

How are the Sixers going to use him?

Anyway, I kinda enjoy watching Isiah's monster pillage the city of New York.

We feel for you guys. I mean, come on, we had Babcock who was pretty stupid as well. The difference is our owners were smart enough to get rid of him quick. Dolan for some reason can't seem to come to his senses and fire Isiah.

it's good to be a cheerleader but Nate needs a reality check though cause he acts like he's the leader of the team - he shouldn't be getting into it with Malik Rose or Jerome James, he should be bringing malik donuts.

Well no one else wants to act like a leader. And who cares if he gets into it with Rose or James, both are garbage and Nate might as well shoot 18-foot jumpers with donuts into their mouths. Nate is the only player who plays like its a playoff game every game and with that intensity. Who else on the Knicks comes even close to that?

I hate to defend Larry Brown here, with the godawful immature job he has preformed here, but Nate needs to shut up and listen.

Its been like this since the beginning of the season, him yelling at refs, getting in agruements with players, and etc.

Nate, you're a 5"9 Shooting guard, listen to Larry Brown if you want any chance of developing point guard skills and not being an off guard for the rest of your career. And Nate will end up in the NBDL if he doesn't listen.

But I'm not worried, cause Nate, well hopefully is a good listener.

I'm not really choosing no one sides with this season, I can't be any more disgusting with this year. I'm beaten down to the point where I think we will finish 19-63

Don't worry, just a couple of more weeks, and you get a 6 month break from watching this 'team'.

I know, thank god. And also thank god baseball is finally here and my Yanks started off the season with a bang, while the Knicks season has gone up in a bang..

Spitballs.....LMBAAAAO

are they tatle taling on Nate?
AHHA

<div class="quote_poster">Quoting AznxBaller:</div><div class="quote_post">How are the Sixers going to use him?</div>

with nate, we could have him come off the bench for AI and give us a scoring punch. that way, AI can rest more and not get so tired through the season. or, we can just trade away AI and work with our future pg pieces in nate and louis. we can see who pans out the most and use the other as trade bait.

also, is it just me, or does nate seem a little immature? i mean, spitting spitballs, picking a fight with rose in the shower for a couple of bucks, and picking a fight with jerome? lol. what makes it even funnier is that the guy is only like 5-5.

nah.....lol. anyways, you have to admit. a future duo of iggy and nate would be exciting. throw in james white who we can get with our second, well be one of the most exciting teams in the future

Isaiah has got to be one of the worst GM's in history. lol at the spit balls, hehe

I want to knock Larry Brown for being old school, but it is his old school methodology that has gotten him to where he is now. Larry Brown and rookies are like Oil and Water sometimes.
It'll be a wonder if Isiah Thomas still is the GM for New York at the end of this summer.
