Re: NBA Draft Thread Vol. 2
If ever there was somebody who should have a rooting interest in Kyle Singler it would be me. He's from my hometown, he went to the same high-school I graduated from. But the guy for all his smarts and supposed "solid D" in the college game, looks like a guy who will have a very, very tough time making the jump to the pros. Derrick Williams (who I think is a tweener and will probably also struggle a bit in the pros) absolutely manhandled him in the NCAA tournament this year. When a guy who is supposedly physically mature gets pushed around the way he did, you cringe when you think about him playing against the much more physically gifted bigs at the next level.
Well for one thing Singler played power forward in college, so it's doubtful that he'll be a three in the NBA (especially given his athletic limitations) To your larger point about trading Batum for a point guard and drafting a reserve 3, that's all well and good, but who is going to trade a young starting quality point for Nic? Maybe there's some theoretical deal to made floating around out there, but right now I'm not sure I see it. Realistically, If this team wants a young "point guard of the future," it's either going to take more ammo than Batum to get one or they are going to have to try and find a guy in the draft (again). Maybe that's Reggie jackson, maybe that's Darius Morris, or maybe another guy they have to trade up for.
I'm kinda confused where all of this vitriol for Singler is coming from.
First of all it was, again, just an off the cuff idea. 2nd of all, no one ever said he was going to be the 2nd coming of Michael Jordan. He's going to be a backup and a glue guy, but he hustles, has a good bball IQ, can hit an open jump shot and play solid D. No one thought Jared Dudley was going to be much of an NBA player and look how solid he's been.

An asset like Batum off the bench is nice, but it seems like a luxury to me when we have such a desperate need for a young PG and solidarity at the 2 & 5. My question was more meant to be along the lines of IF you could get a solid role-player SF to come off the bench (if you don't like Singler, insert your own version of who that might be) for a purchased pick, would it interest you and would you be willing to move Batum with that type of idea in mind...
