OT NBA season suspended & NCAA cancelling all sports for coronavirus

yet again i see this bandied about. it is a false equivalence. car accidents are unforeseen events. acquiring this virus... is not-- it has actually been very traceable and can be controlled.
we live with this inconvenience for a few months, fine. it will save lives.

I am fine with the current inconvenience. But I do not agree that 90 traffic deaths a day are acceptable. We can do a better job of controlling it. The traffic laws are useless.

Didn't say it was media driven. Was comparing this versus H1N1 and the difference in how it is being reported and the level of hysteria versus back then. Also, I'm a talion and just had a huge trip to Italy cancelled. I'm very well aware of what's going on there with family and friends.

Forgive my ignorance, but what's a talion?

I found this on the web but I'm guessing that was not what you were wanting to convey?

Talion
A giant cuckold who cannot manage a team properly.
It can also be used as a term for someone with an erectile dysfunction

barfo

Oregon just banned gatherings of 250 or more people.

Edit: For 4 weeks.

there are PLENTY of ways to control spread. You literally just saw it with the NBA suspension. Tons of workplaces going into remote mode. This absolutely IS controllable with basic action. We need to learn from Italy, not dismiss this as media hysteria and simply remain status quo.

You are hilarious.

you need to apply critical context. The mortality rate of the 2009 swine flue (H1N1) was 0.02%. There were well over a billion people infected

the mortality rate of covid-19 is around 3% currently. If say 200 million are infected worldwide, the death toll could be 2-6 million. That's why the media is focusing on it....the virus appears to spread easier than the flu and is exponentially more deadly

So a question for the people who know the contacts better then I do. So if the Blazers don't end up playing any more games this year, that means they would have played 80% of their regular season games. Does that mean the players only will be able to collect 80% of their salary? is it a annual salary, or is it per game?

I know for the MLB they do 1/162nd of their salary. So if the season gets cancelled they dont get paid.

Here... most likely the same thing, but I don't know for certain.

I think way too many people are still thinking of this as a common flu. So far, it's proving to be significantly more fatal than the flu. And it's also proving to be as easily spread, if not easier. At one point yesterday, there were around 8500 reported cases in Italy and 630 deaths. That's a 7% mortality rate. Worldwide it's still hovering around 3%. If 100 million people contract this and there's a 2% mortality rate that's 2 million dead

I hope all the reports are alarmist and way off base. Unfortunately, the reporting is based upon estimates from experts. As someone said earlier, maybe the best we can do is flatten the curve of infection rate in order to manage care better without a collapse. And one way to do that is to discourage large gatherings of people like at a BB game or a concert.

the youngest person to die in Italy was 55 with chronic issues.

let’s not act like the mortality rate is the same across the board

odds are, for most people, it’s the flu.

HCP said they get paid unless lockout.

Seems like others determined CJ was an asshole for talking about money when they’ll “still get paid.”

It appears the working theory is that they’ll get paid.

not sure where this theory came about and can’t imagine owners would go along with this. Loss of revenue, refunds, and handing out cash for no games?

last I heard they got “game checks” so, not sure.

NCAA mens and womens should just find two arenas, send all the teams to them and play both tournaments in as few as days as possible.

unlikely to stop it, but slowing it is key.

Step 1: Test all players and refs for Covid-19
Step 2: Fly all players and refs to an island with sporting arenas already built
Step 3: Play the games there

I’ve been wondering how Covid-19 would affect my work (Grubhub). Will people stop eating out all together? Will people seek to use services like Grubhub, UberEats, Doordash, Postmates more often as it limits interaction with general public?

I haven’t let concern over the virus stop me from going out and working. I wash my hands often and try to do what I can to keep myself and the customers healthy.

Maybe it will be end up being good for business so to speak. Last few weeks have been solid earnings wise. I’m definitely going to be keeping tabs on how busy it stays.

I think using food delivery services could help stop the spread as long as the delivery drivers are staying health conscious.

Be safe out there brother

I was more answering the is it per game question.

I have no idea how it works otherwise.

But honestly, no game no pay.

probably the most informative, practical and useful discussion i've heard. dude predicted almost the exact scenario 6yrs ago

I was specifically talking to HCP because I know he isn’t some minimum salary cashier, as I’m pretty sure the Blazers pay enough for someone to build a savings if they’re financially prudent. (Not saying you’re a min. Salary employee, just stating why I said that.)

And yes, as a Blazer YouTuber, it’s gonna be tough.

I would also say though that when I started my entrepreneurial journey and my own YT channel, I had enough i savings where I wasn’t worried about how my channel would do for at least 6-12 months. (Affiliate links for software products mainly.)

I feel bad for you though; it’s clear you’ve worked hard. I do hope you (if you haven’t already) save a lot of what you earn for this reason. Particularly as I know the ups and downs of the income flow of YT.
Yeah I agreed with your initial post with me being the example as I shouldve been doing more outside of that so that I could absorb that blow. But instead I worked hard and was finally seeing some good results this month. Obviously others have it a lot worse, it just sucks all the way around.

You can still make videos FAM just change your aspect. I’m sure your viewers have their opinions on this and want to hear yours as well. This is almost unprecedented; weigh in and hear what they have to say as well. Keep your viewers informed as information develops, talk about what this means for the Blazers going forward, hindsight on the season, looking towards the future - etc...
Definitely! This left me scrambling to figure out what to do but I just brainstormed video ideas with my community to hold us over and it was very uplifting and encouraging.

you STILL think this is media driven?

Holy hell, dude. Look at what's happening in Italy. We are about 10 days away from that.
The danger per person is a bit overstated IMO, but that doesnt matter if we exceed our health care capacity. That's the big worry so this is all needed.

Check your facts.

I am ok with suspending the season because of the unknown about this virus. But when I hear things like "if we can save one life it is worth it" .........I can't help but wonder about other daily deadly activities. I mean we have lost around 90 people a day to traffic accidents for decades. Should driving cars be eliminated? Of course not, but you would think we would do something to try to stop it. But we never do.
While it's not remotely the same thing......
Do something like implement
1. Speed limits
2. Helmet laws
3. Seatbelt laws
4. Cell phone laws
5. Car safety laws
