According to Hollinger, everybody loses!
Reality: Mavs get Iggy without giving up young cheap players
Memphis dumps Slo-Mo along with Iggy, which they couldn't do with Mavs, and don't take on any salary past this year.
We get three great bench players (including two of my fave cult players). And both Wright and Anderson are (a) very good perimeter defenders, and (b) better bench distributors than anyone we have currently.
(Obvious objection: if Slo-Mo's worth getting, why would Memphis want to dump him? Answer: because they have a shit-ton of younger, cheaper wing players and aren't playing him that much. But I maintain (contrary to the evidence, perhaps) that Anderson is a Boris Diaw type of oddball who really needs to right context. And if he's allowed to be the PG he basically was at UCLA I think that'll be using him much better. I would also gladly accept TYUS JONES instead of Anderson if Memphis wanted to dump him instead.)
I like Delon Wright and K Anderson allot.

Why wouldn't Dallas just trade Courtney Lee and the GS 2nd for Iggy?

Defensive minded players should be the focus, whether it be on the wing or the backcourt. Wright would’ve been great but that ship has probably sailed. Covington would be awesome and he can play the four. He’s worth a non lottery first, but considering how much Olshey seems to value picks, I doubt he agrees.

Olshey needs to turn either the Whiteside expiring or his exceptions into future pieces. He’s only got two weeks with Whiteside, and considering the realistic ceiling for the rest of this season (8th seed,) he should probably prioritize dumping him.
By all accounts, EVERYONE is after Covington, including (oddly enough) the 76ers. You don't know what you've got till it's gone, I guess.

so you get an expiring contract for next year and then no good deals come about. Do you trade that for an expiring contract the following year and then again the next year so on and so on?
Maybe, you gotta have trade chips. They may be able to clear more cap space in 2021 though. There should be something available next year
This year is unusually quiet in terms of top players being available.

Ariza is an expiring contract if we pick up his option next year and would be good insurance till Hood is back playing and then can be dealt at the trade deadline if we choose. As we have seen, the market for expiring contracts isn't always that lucrative.

Well the deadline hasn't passed yet so technically there could be value in expirings. Last year there was tremendous value in expiring contracts as it led to Chicago getting Porter, Philly getting Tobias Harris, and Dallas getting Porzingis. 2021 potentially has a much better free agent class so the expirings could have more value then.

But the point myself and Bones have made all along is that if you want to even have the ability to make a big trade without giving up Dame/CJ/Nurk it's much easier if you're not forcing the other team to take on multi-year bad contracts. So we're not saying the exprings themselves have some huge value but they do become important in matching contracts. I doubt Sacramento does the Ariza trade if Bazemore still has another year left and if they did it would've probably taken a 1st for them to take it.

I know what you and bonesy have been saying. It's probably been posted at least a half dozen times.

Yeah, he has a good start.

Stars usually make around $30M, so wed have to send out $24M to match.

If we were to combine Ariza, Hood, and whoever we might sign for the MLE, we could match but itd kill our wing depth to trade Ariza and Hood, and dont even know if theyll use their MLE
Skal could be thrown in their if he resigns to a good deal, it just gets iffy on the numbers. Plus, it only limits us to one trade, even if we have the assets (prospects, picks) to go make two trades that upgrade our roster into a true contender.

Thats why I want the flexibility of having another expiring next year. Itd make it easier to go make something happen without killing our depth, and if the contract was big enough, it could open up the possibility for 2 trades. I like that level of flexibility.

Also, what if we want to make a trade on draft day or do sign-and-trade? Having another 1-year contract on the books could make that easier to accomplish.

I also think a lot of teams will be looking for expiring contracts next year since the free agent class of 2021 is much better than this years.

But this isnt a simple equation by any means. Lots of factors to weigh. Im just of the opinion that we'd be setting ourselves up much better if we traded Whiteside for some combination of help at other positions, 2nd round pick(s), and/or 2-year contracts.

Blazers 3.5 games away from the #5 pick in the Lottery where there will be some good pieces, certainly an influx of talent that this team needs no matter how young. They are currently 8 games behind the #7 Playoff spot, so the #8 (2.5 games back) is about as high as they could go barring some major shift.

If it's a choice of being dismanteled on National TV by the Lakers with the media fawning all over LeBron and AD or bringing back major pieces next year (Nurkic/Collins/Hood?) along with a high Lottery pick, after how this season has gone, this seems like an easy choice.

Many teams in the Lottery may be there for a long time but teams like the Warriors and the Blazers will have the pieces to reset almost instantly. So why not add to that as much as possible.

Obi-Wan Toppin is a a long, rangy 6'9" SF who is explosive but can also shoot the '3'....and almost perfect fit for the Blazers. He is rated somewhere between #4-#12 but has been climbing all season. If that type of prize is available for the frustration of this season, at least it is something. I'll take that over a dismissal at the hands of the purple and piss.

Exactly my point. But nobody listens to that idea

My only fear about getting a high pick is that we would trade it to get some average veteran like Gordon, who won’t help us win that much but will ensure that our mid term future remains grim. Us actually using that pick to get a young player who improves us long term is a long shot.

Seems like it's gonna happen whether they listen or not?

Exactly. Teams don't intentionally tank in January. Lets all run that idea past Dame and see what he says. Because until he quits on the season, they will still win once in a while. You think he will stop performing at a high level before the All Star selection?
It is a little too early to start sitting key players. If they keep losing, and their current active roster suggests that they will, then it will take care of itself.

No. He put up 45 10 days ago in the G League and has been looking really impressive. Can shoot, defend, pass. Good post moves, too.

Patton is better than Biggie but with a full roster he’s probably not the type of guy they would make room for. Signing him in the summer wouldn’t be a bad idea though. Same with Rabb.

He’s gonna make the All Star team. As soon as that happens I’m looking for load management.

4 days left....and Dame's 'out-of-body' experience has changed the tone for the team.

So now what? Do they still try to make some type of deal or just hope that Nurk/Collins/Skal can come back and eventually support what is transpiring for the moment?

It seems unlikely that they move Whiteside or Ariza so maybe the next option is the Buy-Out market.

Who might be available there that could give a Kanter-like boost?

Quick says no.

Yeh, I think if we trade Whiteside now we need a good backup center coming back and a good rotation player. I'm thinking a third guard with really strong defense and PG skills, like Schroder or Holiday.

---Derrick Rose
---Marcus Morris
---RoCo
Any of the three could be great pickups for the right price. I still think the team needs a little more of that edge, swagger and nastiness the best teams seem to have. I think either of the Morris twins would help in that regard - RoCo too.
