I know I'm on an island here but I still think it makes sense to trade Whiteside and Hezonja for Batum and assets.

Like possibly a 1st round pick swap (top-5 protected) that goes to next year if not conveyed and a 2nd round pick via Cleveland (currently 33). Hornets are currently 6th and Blazers are 14th.

Then use the TPE and a 2nd or two to get Baynes from Phoenix.

Edited to add Hezonja.

That's a horrible deal. Batum sucks ass.

Here’s another guy buried that needs saving: Alex Len. Atlanta doesn’t need him after acquiring Capela. Expiring contract that’d fit into a TPE.

Former lottery pick so fits Olsheys MO.

Grades out very well in rebounding. Contested rebound % lines up favorably with Whiteside and his box out splits are actually superior, and are identical to Kanter and KAT’s. He’s also flashed an ability to shoot from outside. Last season in 2.6 attempts per game he shot 36%. His rim protection splits are also pretty intriguing as he grades out in the same ballpark as guys like Baynes and McGee. Still only 26. Idk, he’s played for some truly shitty teams. I’d take a look.

Very much a Neil kind of move. Fit him into a TPE or something like Skal/Mario for Len works cap wise.

Huh, that's a bunch of crap.
Knox and the first is pretty good. Morris if re-signed makes the deal great for GSW. They could get Wiseman and draft another stud high pick.

Curry
Klay
Morris
Green
Wiseman

That’s just the starting 5 too

Batum is awful and his fit on the team has nothing to do with why I want to do this trade.

it seems like you're so invested in the idea of rolling Whiteside into a contract next year you're ignoring how ugly the trade is

more than that, if Whiteside's expiring contract is only worth Batum this year, why would Batum's expiring contract suddenly explode into significant value next year?

I know you don't like it but there are several reasons (some of which are using your own thoughts you've previously posted):

1) The market is flooded this season with expirings from 2016.

2) The free agent class of 2021 is supposed to be great compared to the weaker class this summer.

3) There doesn't appear to be a "star" level player available right now.

All of these have a chance to be different this summer or next season. On top of that, I'm not saying that Whiteside is ONLY worth Batum's contract, that's silly. They'd have to pay us to get out of it. The pick swap would potentially give us a mid lottery pick instead of mid teens pick, which regardless of how bad this draft is would theoretically give us a better asset either as a player for our team or as a trade chip (#6 is more valuable than #14 no matter what the draft). Plus adding a 2nd round pick or more gives us things to use in trades for other players using the TPE or DPE, such as my Baynes suggestion.

Just a hypothetical, if we had 35 wins right now instead of 23, and Collins/Nurk healthy, we would almost certainly be trying to deal our 28 mil expiring contract and some youngins for someone like Love/ Aldridge/ etc. Batum (or a combo of smaller pieces) would be that next year.

if Nurkic had been healthy, Portland would never have traded for Whiteside so they wouldn't have that expiring contract

Fine, then the Harkless/Turner/Leonard expirings would have been in play in a trade. Which is what we are hoping a contract next year will be.

We will be in a better position to make a move for our FINAL piece.

Heck, Turner and a lottery protected 1st just landed Capela.

I hear you, but Neil would be crucified for making this type of deal.

Turner was gone. he's not part of your imaginary equation

Harkless and Meyers might be here. As far as trades, that would be better because then because we'd be dealing with smaller hypothetical salary exchanges, and that might make it possible to make a trade for salary next year and still remain under the tax....and I believe Olshey likely has instructions out of Seattle to stay under the tax line next season

in other words, Whiteside's contract is too big to think about matching in a trade, one for one, and avoiding tax next season. I've said to Hoops two or three times if he can come up with a trade that brings back a smaller salary next season, like a Delon Wright + an expiring, that makes sense to me. Batum or Love or Aldridge don't make any sense to me no matter how many different ways you guys try to polish those turds

Tough to get Oubre due to the size of his contract. Ariza and parts would do it but you can't combine Ariza with anyone.
It would have to be Hassan, and we'd have to take back some money. I would love Baynes + Oubre + minimum filler for Hassan + picks.

Ariza burned bridges while in PHX I believe.

What are you basing Knox being good on? He certainly hasn't been good in the NBA.
I think Knox has a ton of talent, I personally think he’s Kuzma level just in a horrible organization.

Best way to get Oubre would be a three way where we send Hassan to the third team.

I literally said the same thing in my post you decided to nit pick while missing the big picture. You asked the point of kicking the can down the road, and a few of us have pointed out. Sorry you still don't understand the merits of it.

Ariza and 1st is a no brainer... no one in draft will help Dame more than Oubre!

According to the ESPN Trade machine, is doesn't quite fit. Off but just ~$200,000. Since Ariza can't be combined with anyone else, it makes him tougher to acquire.

Any chance of something like this?
