I feel like the Kings would take him if he could be had for almost nothing. They really wanted him when he was a RFA. I don’t know when they’ve ever had as much talent than what they’d have with Fox/Lavine/Sabonis.

Not saying that’d be the right move, just saying I could see them wanting him.

I would be interested in what Utah would ask for in return. Markkanen is only 26. He's a deadly shooter, with a great 64% TS percentage. Decent rebounder. What's not to love?
Has nothing to do with not loving him lol. We’d all love him. We’re just not on his timeline, and he’s not on ours.

Why do the Blazers need to rebuild like OKC did? Just because OKC is having success doesn’t mean all rebuilding teams would. Take a look at Detroit. Houston also has sped up their rebuilding process.

I’ll answer your question with another question:

Why don’t the Jazz just keep him then? The Jazz are so much better than us despite also rebuilding, they have WAAYY more 1st rounders, they have a front court of the future between Kessler and Hendricks (Hendricks could easily slide into SF if Markkanen stayed).

You’re telling me that you see a rebuilding team that’s way better than us SELLING on an AS, but we’d need him despite being a much worse team? In the end, us bickering about this means nothing, because I’m 99% sure Cronin won’t be an idiot about this rebuild, at least as it pertains to acquiring a star.

Houston at least got multiple stabs in the draft between Green, JSJ, Eason, Amen, Whitmore. They also had misses like Garuba and Josh Christopher (really goes to show you that you can have misses and still be okay down the road). That’s a total of 7 1st rounders they made selections on. We’ve had 3. It helps that we’ve had success in the 2nd round, but don’t let that fool you into thinking we’re ready.

I can guarantee you, in a bad draft year, they will want our lotto pick, no doubt. Then it’s also the dubs 1st, or having to solve our obligation to send out another future 1st. Jazz will also want a prospect back. Is Murray, Brogdon, and 2 1sts (1 being our lotto pick) enough? Even if it’s enough, I have no desire to give that up for the pleasure of paying Markkanen $40-45m for 4-5 years next summer. Not because he wouldn’t be worth it, we just wouldn’t be good enough to do anything with him.

The Indiana Pacers have been aggressive in pursuing upgrades for their roster. The Pacers were in on OG Anunoby before the Toronto Raptors traded him to the New York Knicks, and remain linked to Pascal Siakam.

Indiana is building most of their trade offers around Buddy Hield and a future first-round pick. The Pacers have continued to keep Bennedict Mathurin and Jarace Walker out of trade talks.

Hield is making $19.3 million in the final season of his contract. The Pacers own all of their own first-round picks and have an extra pick coming to them via the Oklahoma City Thunder. That extra pick is in 2024 and is the least favorable of the Thunder's pick, the LA Clippers pick, The Houston Rockets pick (if 5-30) and the Utah Jazz pick (if 11-30).

Grant for hield, Toppin or Smith, and a pick? Replace Grant with cheaper, younger PF, flip hield for best pick available, and add another 1st.

Neither Smith nor Toppin will ever be as good as Grant. Not very enticing, honestly.

I need Walker and crappy salary, no picks added. Otherwise, let’s wait for something better.
They've got little interest in moving walker. They don't have crappy salary to aid in that, unfortunately. If they're moving walker, they're aiming higher than Grant

That’s fine, aim higher lol.

I just don’t think this is a good enough sell for me. Give me another highly protected future 1st that turns into 3 2nds then. 1 ehh 1st and 3 guys that wouldn’t really have a future with us isn’t enticing imo. I’d rather go after a raw rookie like OMax and get that same 1st. I’d take a Kuminga deal over this Indy one, 100%.

I asked this in the game thread but I'll ask it here: the trade deadline is 4 weeks away. Why are people assuming that players are being held out for trades 4 weeks early? It's possible, I guess, but it sure doesn't match the history of the trade deadline

it's probably that flu = flu, not flu = trade incoming

You could be right, but I’ve been wanting the vets gone, so any reason (far fetched or not) for me to believe they could be gone, I’ll take it lmao.

Some restrictions have been lifted but yeah it seems early to assume a player is sitting because a trade is imminent.

I saw this one today: just a suggestion by a guy, not a rumor but I kind of like it.
Grant to the Mavs for
F Olivier Maxence-Prosper
C Richaun Holmes
F Maxi Kleber
2026 First-Round Pick (Top-6 Protected, Pending Obligation To NY),
2028 First-Round Pick Swap (Top-8 Protected)
Prosper is a SF rookie with fairly good weight and wingspan. Plays hard on defense.

Building on this idea that @UKRAINEFAN posted in the Jerami Grant trade ideas thread. Had to go deep into this pick compensation package to see if it was even feasible. I had never heard of “pending obligation before”. I thought future FRPs wouldn’t be able to be traded until after their obligation was conveyed, meaning this wouldn’t even be available until over the summer after the Mavs FRP lands after #10. This was not only one problem with this trade idea, there was more than one problem with the draft compensation, and I came to realize this idea wasn’t that well thought out. Disappointing, because I also saw this was a B/R article? Sports journalism…brutal.

But as I look deeper into Dallas’ pick situation and roster, they may also have some sense of desperation like the dubs. Their pick situation is just as bad, and I think it’s actually worse. They owe their ‘29 1st to Brooklyn and a ‘30 swap to SA. The ‘24 1st is protected until it conveys (and the obligation lasts until ‘25), meaning they actually only have the ‘27 1st to trade for an upgrade. OMax is very intriguing but is way more raw than either Kuminga or Moody. Luka, Kyrie, Lively. I know Green would have interest around the league as a young guy like OMax, but I feel like guys like Kleber and Holmes are negative assets, worse than someone like Wiggins. A team could talk themselves into rebuilding Wiggins, no real chance for Kleber or Holmes to turn into positive salaries honestly.

This is something I came up with that would actually work in terms of having the right available picks. First, Brogdon for salary dump and the ‘24 DAL 1st, a bare minimum trade that would need to happen for any of this to be possible. If that pick is traded back to Dallas, they would be able to trade 2 1sts in a deal. For taking on the Holmes/Kleber dead weight and them needing us to even get an upgrade like Grant (don’t think they have enough for Siakam, and I’m not prepared to be wrong on this), I absolutely need that ‘25 1st unprotected. If ‘27 doesn’t convey, I guess they could find another 2nd and send us 2 2nds if the ‘27 1st doesn’t convey.

The Fournier contract is off the books in the summer, Ryan expires, Holmes is an expiring salary, the only salary we’ll have is Kleber.

Been thinking of where our players might go. Interesting they didn’t play last night.

Brogden- Philadelphia, that would be perfect. Send Dame to Milwaukee, then Holiday to Boston, and now Brogdon to Philadelphia. Compensation, for Brogdon, get the stuff they got for Harden from the LA clippers. Also, Oklahoma City threw in a low first round pick in that deal to steal one of the unprotected pics swaps (I would almost rather have an unprotected pick swap, then a highly protected low first round pick). Use that protected pick obtained from Oklahoma to give to Chicago to relieve our obligation of owing them a first all the way to 2028. We don’t want that to mess up our Milwaukee unprotected pic swap). Possibly add Thyable as part of the deal to get the extra first to give to Chicago.

Grant- send him to the New York Knicks. They have draft compensation they could give back.

No more 2024 draft choices please, I’d be happy with anything later than that. Come on Crowin, and make it happen.

The Chicago obligation would have turned into a second rounder by 2028. No issue there.

That’s not the way I read it. Lottery protected in 2028, it’s very vague, but the way I read it is they could have the 23rd pick in 2028, which is outside of the lottery. Milwaukee’s unprotected first could be number one pick and they would be unable to swap because Portland with owe Chicago there first since it’s not in the lottery and they would be unable to swap. If Portland is in the lottery, then the Chicago obligation turns into a second, but if they’re not in the lottery, they would owe their pick to Chicago meaning they would be unable to swap with Milwaukee.
Hopefully I’m wrong on this, but that’s the way I read it, I find it interesting that Cronin would put himself in this position, so maybe you are right but that’s not the way I read it

you're not wrong

if Portland is in the lottery thru 2027, and then is in the playoffs in 2028 while the Bucks are in the top-4 of the draft, the Blazers get screwed and the Bulls get a giant bonus

I could be wrong, but fairly certain the Bulls do not have the option to swap picks with the Bucks, just we do.

that might be right...probably is right. At the same time, the Bulls would own the rights to that Blazer pick. But the other side of that is Milwaukee agreed to swap with Portland, not Chicago

I don't know how that works, but I'd be pretty certain the Bucks were aware of the encumbrance on Portland's 1st round pick. Maybe it pivots on specific language in the swap agreement?
