I saw this one today: just a suggestion by a guy, not a rumor but I kind of like it.
Grant to the Mavs for
F Olivier Maxence-Prosper
C Richaun Holmes
F Maxi Kleber
2026 First-Round Pick (Top-6 Protected, Pending Obligation To NY),
2028 First-Round Pick Swap (Top-8 Protected)
Prosper is a SF rookie with fairly good weight and wingspan. Plays hard on defense.
Building on this idea that
@UKRAINEFAN posted in the Jerami Grant trade ideas thread. Had to go deep into this pick compensation package to see if it was even feasible. I had never heard of “pending obligation before”. I thought future FRPs wouldn’t be able to be traded until after their obligation was conveyed, meaning this wouldn’t even be available until over the summer after the Mavs FRP lands after #10. This was not only one problem with this trade idea, there was more than one problem with the draft compensation, and I came to realize this idea wasn’t that well thought out. Disappointing, because I also saw this was a B/R article? Sports journalism…brutal.
But as I look deeper into Dallas’ pick situation and roster, they may also have some sense of desperation like the dubs. Their pick situation is just as bad, and I think it’s actually worse. They owe their ‘29 1st to Brooklyn and a ‘30 swap to SA. The ‘24 1st is protected until it conveys (and the obligation lasts until ‘25), meaning they actually only have the ‘27 1st to trade for an upgrade. OMax is very intriguing but is way more raw than either Kuminga or Moody. Luka, Kyrie, Lively. I know Green would have interest around the league as a young guy like OMax, but I feel like guys like Kleber and Holmes are negative assets, worse than someone like Wiggins. A team could talk themselves into rebuilding Wiggins, no real chance for Kleber or Holmes to turn into positive salaries honestly.
This is something I came up with that would actually work in terms of having the right available picks. First, Brogdon for salary dump and the ‘24 DAL 1st, a bare minimum trade that would need to happen for any of this to be possible. If that pick is traded back to Dallas, they would be able to trade 2 1sts in a deal. For taking on the Holmes/Kleber dead weight and them needing us to even get an upgrade like Grant (don’t think they have enough for Siakam, and I’m not prepared to be wrong on this), I absolutely need that ‘25 1st unprotected. If ‘27 doesn’t convey, I guess they could find another 2nd and send us 2 2nds if the ‘27 1st doesn’t convey.
The Fournier contract is off the books in the summer, Ryan expires, Holmes is an expiring salary, the only salary we’ll have is Kleber.
