Nets officially sign Malik Allen

Apparently the Nets have officially signed Malik Allen. I assume that this is the non-guaranteed, one-year deal discussed last week. </p>

There probably isn't room on the roster for both Allen and Benson, even if the Nets cut Ilic. I'm rooting for Rod.</p>

assuming that the Nets do, in fact, carry three PGs, I can't see how that's possible. Of course, they may not, and decide that Carter can serve as "point guard" in case Kidd or Marcus are unavailable. They'd still have to ditch Ilic and BRob--not great losses, but there's the financial side of things also. Moreover, carrying Benson and Allen both would create a huge logjam up front, even if they rid themselves of Ilic. Half the roster would be PF/Cs. </p>

yes, but I'm not sure Hite can play the point. If I remember correctly, Hite was an undersized SF in college, which is why he wasn't drafted; he had to learn to play SG. He apparently was also working on developing some PG skills, to serve as a combo guard, but there's no indication anywhere that he can play PG at this level.</p>

If Ilic can agree to sign a deal with a foreign club, the Nets could just pay him the difference in salary, as they did with Zoran as a "buyout." I woulnd't be surprised if that happened.</p>

Not a bad signing. I think he will do good coming off the bench and I'm sure he'll do better than Collins. I could see this signing as one of our better ones so far which says alot.

He also springs many fast breaks and alley oop opportunities by a well-placed pick. Whenever RJ springs free down the sideline, look for what happened to his defender; usually, he's stuck behind Collins. The Nets' strategy with Collins is to never let him take a shot . . . it works so long as there are a couple of other scorers on the court that demand full attention of the defense. he actually is the most effective when he is on the court with the big three . . . which is why I'd expect him to stay the starter, but only play 16-18 minutes a night, mostly at the start of the first and third quarters.</p>

Also, Collins' offense has suffered due to a variety of leg and knee injuries he has suffered over the past few years. When he was drafted, he had a decent jump shot and was a much better free throw shooter, but because of his injuries, he can't get any lift anymore, and has been unable to develop a comfortable shot now that he lacks the ability to leave the floor. yet he never complains, and comes to play every day, when many other players would take half a season off. It's not his fault the Nets are using him out of position, yet he does whatever he is asked, which often results in being beaten black and blue. The guy should be everyone's hero, instead he is ridiculed.</p>

Yeah, I have definitely noticed this. I remember a few seasons back, he would be the player to shoot technical freethrows, because his shots went in consistently. After some "minor" injuries, his free throw shooting tremendously dropped, as well as his mid-range jumper, which today, is non-existent. You could just tell the guy has a hard time running back and forth, unlike his previous years. </p>

Good point, and I can say I'm guilty of this. The amount of blame I put on him is ridiculous. </p>

I have no direct proof of this, but I really think he's had some seriously disabling injuries, but he doesn't talk about it. Every now and then something leaks out--like a few summers ago there was a passing reference by Coach Frank to a leg nerve injury that Collins has suffered the previous spring. He's a big part of the team, but problems crop up when he's forced to play too much, or as part of a unit that he's not suited for. There's no question that the other players get more rebounds, in total, when he's on the floor than when he's not, and that the opposition gets more offensive rebounds, as a percentage of opportunities,when he is on the bench. But it is hard to see exactly what he's doing out there; there are no simple stats to measure his contribution, so you have to look for indirect evidence.

You'd be surprised. Most opposing big men do much better once Collins has left the game. </p>

You know, I had high hopes last year . . . he lost a lot of weight in the offseason, hoping to ease the burden on his knees, and claimed that his injuries were healing . . . but then he regressed again. He plays very physically, takes a lot of charges, and gets beat up a lot. I think we'll never really know the truth about the injuries and his physical condition until one of us meets him at the mall and asks. Are there any Twin autograph sessions coming up?</p>

Did you not watch the playoffs? That can be the only explanation for including Bosh in that statement. </p>
