FYI: Gallo is playing like a borderline all-star this year. His contract seems pretty reasonable given his age and productivity.
I just compared Nik's stats to Gallo's.
This season, yes, Gallo looks to be the better player. His numbers all across the board are just a bit better. Add that all up, and you a significanly more effective player (for 17 games this season anyway) And of course, he is starting.
However, if you dig a little deeper and compare their career numbers, the stats are eerily similar - with Nik edging Danno in many categories. Regardless, close for their careers so far.
So, do you pay a guy who has a HUGE jump in numbers during his contract extension season based on that 17 games stretch?,
or, do you pay a guy based on his career numbers?,
or, do you pay a guy based on his "potential"?,
or, do you pay a guy because he was drafted high?,
or, do you pay a guy like you were a team with the financial wherewithal of the New York Knicks?,
or, do you see where I am going?
A bunch of teams are going to be VERY UNHAPPY with a lot of these contracts that are being signed now that we have a new CBA and a new world order (ie, much more pain and much less flexibility for salary capped teams).
The Nugs just paid Affalo and Nene and Gallinari based on the best case scenario for each these players.
They are bound to be disappointed. Almost by definition it is impossible for more than one of these players to become a "good value" for their contract. I am betting that NONE of them will.
