The Athletic has CJ in Tier 4 of their list of the top 125 players in the league. Norm is in Tier 5. Given the guys on the list, I don't have a real problem with that classification for CJ. Here's a screen shot of part of the Tier 4 list:

They've only gone through Tier 3 so far, which has legit All-Star guys like Booker, Mitchell, KAT, Beal, etc. Presumably, Dame will make Tier 1, but that remains to be seen.

I tend to agree.
Randle or Ingram would fit our team a lot better IMO.
 
There is close to zero chance the teams with Ingram, Sabonis, Randle, Grant would do a 1 for 1 trade with us.
 
When the trade for Chris Paul to the Lakers fell apart, the story goes that David Stern said the Clippers offer wasn't enough and Olshey ended the conversation. This was when the NBA front office was assisting the New Orleans' crapfest. Olshey waited and made other smaller moves while other teams moved on. When it looked like a trade of CP3 was stalling, Olshey was quickly back in it and pulled the trigger on a guy he said wasn't in negotiations for the trade -- Eric Gordon.

Morey isn't going to sell Simmons for less than a strong trade. Olshey now has Lillard and Powell for a back court, yet Lillard has publicly said the roster wasn't good enough last season ... and most of us would agree it still isn't good enough to have a "chance" (as Lillard has put it) to contend.

IMHO, Olshey is waiting. He knows he has to make THE trade necessary to keep Lillard. With Simmons (and Powell) on board, the days of doubling Lillard to get the ball out of his hands would be about over; Olshey has tried to fix this since the New Orleans series.

The defense improves significantly. The size of the team becomes a strength. Keeping Norm makes the trade possible. This is the trade Olshey didn't just jump on like with Stern and CP3. Same thing with Morey. Olshey will have to pay up, but I think he's going to get this done -- Simmons to Portland in a CJ package.

[If Olshey was really cagey, he'd get Draymond Green out of GSt while sending CJ to Philly along with Wiseman from the Warriors with Kerr getting Simmons. Additional contracts to make the numbers work, but handing Green to Lillard and Billups would be a whole lot of fun.]

I think he may be waiting to see if GS comes out slow and is willing to mix it up. I could see Klay not looking like himself or Wiggins taking a step back. If so, and GS is willing to roll the die on Simmons, that three way makes a hell of a lot of sense. It’s also one of the few moves that Dray (assuming GS starts out slow), CJ, Simmons, and Dame all sign off on.

It's so frustrating to see a trade that just makes so much sense for everyone involved not happen.

The other super-obvious part of this would/should be Wiggins+pieces to Toronto for Siakam (assuming GS has enough left over after Morey extracts his pounds of flesh).

POR: CJ out, Draymond in
PHI: Simmons out, CJ/Kuminga/Moody in
TOR: Siakam out, Wiggins/Wiseman in
GSW: Dray/Wiggins/Wiseman/ Kuminga/Moody out, Simmons/Siakam in.

Everyone wins, including the NBA as a whole, which gets one of biggest blockbuster deals it's ever seen, making for all sorts of exciting storylines.

And of course, it'll never happen.

in one way, basketball hasn't changed much: unless it's a case of elite talent, 6'8 is worth more than 6'3. But, a 5M/year difference between the two players is kind of large. That's 28% more than Powell's annual salary

i am guessing that max will be announced shortly in the coming weeks, but next season is going to be tax hell for them once it kicks in.

Yup. I guess that they're going all in on making a run over the next couple of seasons. They won't be alone. Hella lot of money is going to get spent in the West.

Does anyone have definitive clarity on when Norm can be traded?

I'm seeing Dec 15. But also see this rule about how since we used Bird rights to go above the cap & he got a 120% increase over his previous salary, we have to wait until January 15.

if my math is right, and I'm reading the CBA right, Portland was barely under the salary cap (less than a million) when they re-signed Powell. In that case, it would have allowed the Dec 15 option if Olshey would have signed either McLemore or Snell before signing Powell. That way, the Blazers would have already been over the cap, meaning Powell's contract wouldn't have "caused" Portland to go over the cap.

it's a fairly minor detail though. One month might make a difference but Jan 15 is closer to the trade deadline when teams start getting motivated to trade

besides that, if it's a trade for Simmons I think the Blazers would be much worse off trading Powell + either Nurkic or RoCo for Simmons, than CJ for Simmons. It could be Powell + Nance but I'm thinking Portland would have to add Elleby or Brown to make salaries work. And if Portland is at 14 players, they'd have to sign at least on player prior to the trade, and one shortly after if it's a 3 for 1 trade

This was my reason for confusion. The order which we signed these players might could play a role if i'm reading that clause correctly. There was an insider earlier who predicted a Roco/Powell for Simmons deal was in the works when Powell is eligible to be traded (hence my interest in this). Simmons holding out for a month is somewhat feasible (albeit unreasonable). Holding out for two months is damn near impossible in my mind.

I still don't think Neil would trade CJ no matter how much we all wish it. Don't think he has as many qualms about trading Powell/Roco.

1) Dame-CJ-Nance-Simmons-Nurkic

or

2) Dame-Powell-RoCo-Simmons-Nurkic

or

3) Dame-Powell-RoCo-Nance-Simmons

there is no doubt in my mind that 2) and 3) are better than 1). Much better in fact. And both options would be available if it was CJ for Simmons. So, of course Olshey would go for 1)

I can't imagine Philly trading Simmons for Powell and RoCo but I suppose they could be desperate by February

I don't even like the Powell/RoCo trade that much. If all it would take is CJ (and even a pick), that makes so much more sense. We keep the ability to put four starting level shooters around Simmons when we want to (Dame, Norm, RoCo, Nance) and become an absolute defensive powerhouse. If you send out RoCo and Powell you lose depth, defense, an extra shooter and have to continue to rely on the Dame/CJ back court to make stops. Fuck Neil's undying devotion to CJ... if it's a real thing and not just a bargaining ploy.

Portland was never under the cap. In the CBA, these provisions are always considered at the 'end of the transaction'.
Additionally to truly be under the cap - Portland would have had to waive the MLE (or tax MLE) and all the CAP HOLDS they have.

Portland's current cap number is $137M. If we subtract out the $6M for the new contracts (Zeller, Snell, McLemore, Brown) and an additional $1M for the difference in salary between Nance/DJJ -> Portland would have had a best case cap number of $130M after re-signing Powell.... This is WAY over the salary cap of $113M.
