Welcome to our community

I have heard the number we have is 26 MIL with our cap holds of 3 RFA's. And that number is also assuming we renounce Hendo at some point.
I'd be interested in the details if you remember where you found that.

Cap is $92 Mil next year.
Our salaries withOUT cap holds is $56.8 Mil
The cap holds for Leonard/Harkless/Roberts/Crabbe can't be more that $16 Mil
Dump Hendo, dump Kaman

That's 92-57-16 = $19 hmmm, you could be right.

Renounce roberts of course. You can sign your backup pg with the room exception.

I've warmed up to the idea of Dwight Howard. I'm convinced he would have a Zach Randolph like career turn around here. He'll give us 15/13 while being a rim protector...sign me up.
Agreed. Here's a real nice summer of fun -

Including all CAP holds, Blazers will have about $8.2M of cap space if the cap ends up at around $92M.
- Renounce C Kaman ($6.5M). Blazers will have $14.7M of cap space.
- Renounce G Henderson ($9.0M). Blazers will have $23.7M of cap space.
- Renounce M Leonard ($7.7M). Blazers will have $31.5M of cap space.
+ Sign D Howard ($30.2M). Blazers will have $1.2M of cap space.
+ Re-sign Brian Roberts for about $4.0M. Since his cap hold is $3.7M, that removes $0.3M from the cap space - $0.9M.
+ Re-sign M Harkless ($8.0M). His cap hold is $7.2M, so that puts us under the cap by about $0.1M of cap space.
+ re-sign A Crabbe ($8.0M). His cap hold is $1.2M, so the Blazers would then be over the cap by approximately $6.7M.

Summary:
- Keep Harkless, Crabbe, and Roberts.
- Lose Leonard, Kaman and Henderson
- Add Howard

Get 'er done Neil!

Here is some stuff on Ian Mahinmi :

Pick and Roll:When Indiana uses Mahinmi on the pick and roll, the teams scored 1.25 points per a possession — which ranks fourth in the league. http://8points9seconds.com/2016/01/12/ian-mahinmi-pick-and-roll/

And Frank Vogel on his defense: "He’s an exceptional defender. He can guard the post. He’s one of the best leverage post defenders in the game. He’s can hold guys off, obviously protect the rim in drops and in helps, but also with great speed to get back out to all these teams that are playing with five 3-point shooters out there. It’s a must to have a guy like Ian if you’re going to be a good defensive team."

Pacer's Defensive Rating when Mahinmi's On/Off: Substantial difference.

Agreed. Here's a real nice summer of fun -

Including all CAP holds, Blazers will have about 29.3M of cap space if the cap ends up at around $92M.
- Renounce C Kaman ($6.5M). Blazers will have $35.8M of cap space.
+ Sign D Howard ($30.2M). Blazers will have $5.6M of cap space.
- Renounce G Henderson ($9.0M). Blazers will have $14.6M of cap space.
+ Sign B Biyombo (age 23), F Ezeli (age 26), or E Fournier (age 23) for $8M - $10M. Blazers will have $4.6M of cap space.
+ Sign a backup point guard. Since Brian Roberts is already here - re-sign him for about $4.0M. Since his cap hold is $3.7M, that removes $0.3M from the cap space - $4.3M. If not him, we have $4.6M to play with. Get this done while we have the space, then resign our restricted free agents with the ability to go over the cap.
+ Re-sign M Harkless ($8.0M). His cap hold is $7.2M, so that leaves about $3.5M of cap space.
+ Re-sign M Leonard ($10.0M). His cap hold is $7.7M, so that leaves about $1.2M of cap space.
+ re-sign A Crabbe ($8.0M). His cap hold is $1.2M, so the Blazers would then be over the cap by approximately $5.5M.

Summary:
- Keep Harkless, Leonard and Crabbe (and potentially Roberts).
- Lose Kaman and Henderson
- Add Howard and 1 of Biyombo, Ezeli or Fournier.

Get 'er done Neil!

In your other pinned post, you dont have us with this much cap space. how do we have so much?

Crabbe is a career 39 3p% shooter who looked solid against GS.

He's going to get overpaid by someone. Keep an eye on the Knicks.

Interesting. By my (updated) calcs, to get Howard, we'd have to give up the rights to Kaman (ok), Henderson (bummer), and Leonard (would have liked to re-sign him).

We'd then be over the CAP and not have any room to sign anyone like Biyombo, Ezeli or Fournier.

Would that be worth it to get Howard?

Yea thats what i thought. Im very ok with renouncing Kaman/Henderson/Lenaord and throwing a max at someone. Don't know if that someone is DHoward though

Howard can work here. On the surface he just doesn't fit this style, however....

Stotts has an uncanny ability to mesh players into his system.

Now *if* you go this rout you have to convince him to take less than the max. He's CLEARLY not worth a max let alone a super max - $30m/per.

Re-Signings
Maurice Harkless
Allen Crabbe
Brian Roberts- Would ideally want a better defender, but not many appealing 3rd pg options and he's nice insurance for Dame & CJ

FA Additions
Hassan Whiteside- Rim protecting center that fits the teams timeline perfectly. He has some risk attached to him but it's worth the gamble imo.
Evan Turner- Gives the Blazers a guy that can take the 2nd unit playmaking burden off of CJ while allowing him to continue to guard pg's.
John Leuer- Fits in nicely as a Meyers replacement.
Cheap 3rd String Center

Losses
Mason Plumlee- Traded to ATL / HOU / MEM for first rounder
Chris Kaman- FA
Meyers Leonard- FA
Gerald Henderson- FA
Cliff Alexander- Waived
Pat Cannaughton- Traded for future 2nd

cap: $92 mil

blazers salaries (2016-17): $56.8 mil

Spending $$ without cap holds: (92-56.8=) $35.2 mil

from Bounce and spotrac:
Here are the CAP holds ($35.3 mil):
- G Henderson: $9.0M (unrestricted)
- M Leonard: $7.7M (restricted)
- M Harkless: $7.2M (restricted)
- C Kaman: $6.5M (unrestricted)
- B Roberts: $3.7M (unrestricted)
- A Crabbe: $1.2M (restricted)
(not counting a stretched Varejao)

Net Spending cash: $0

Basic Plan: Renounce Henderson, Kaman, Roberts
Get 35.2 - 7.7 (Leonard) - 7.2 (Harkless) - 1.2 (Crabbe) = $19.1 Mil

Again, from Bounce:
The estimated Max contracts will be:
0-6 yr NBA vet, 25% of CAP, $23,000,000
7-9 yr NBA vet, 30% of CAP, $27,600,000 (Durant, Horford)
10+ yr NBA vet, 35% of CAP, $32,200,000 (Howard)

So, if I have the numbers right, we have 19.1 mil to spend - not enough to get a max contract player assuming we want to keep Biebs, Harkless, and Crabbe (which I think we do).

It is also not obvious how other teams are going to have so much $$ without ditching most of their rosters.

may have to edit later. Bounce and spotrac don't agree on cap holds.

If Whiteside spurns the Blazers, a Gorgui Dieng trade seems possible. Free agent in 2017 and not sure if he's a fit with KAT.

Depending on the pick (Mem has a 2017 first via Denver that I'd be willing to trade straight up for), a usable piece could be fetched as well I guess.

I thought Minnesota was very happy with the combination. Weren't there some articles about it? Seems like a good fit to me.

It's fine. Both are 5/4's and I think ideally they want more shooting /defensive mobility around Towns, but there's no doubt that they should flashes of good chemistry.

Your numbers are way off. $56M? Were paying $49M after Lillard gets his bump from making an all NBA team. With Crabbes hold, we'd have about $42M in cap space.

With one of Meyers/Harkless holds, we'd have approx. $35M in cap space.

With all three of their holds, we'd have $27M in cap, good for the max, barely not enough for the super max.

if olshey strikes out on one of the big name max players, I could totally see him splitting our cap to get two guys that are just bellow those top level players but still fit the career arc, which when you think about it, that's totally his style. maybe even so much his style, he doesn't even waist his time on the big names and quickly does this so dame can get them all to socal for a team bonding session.

Here are our salaries.

The podcast is good too, they go VERY in depth into Portland's cap-space. Starts at around 2/3 of the way through.

They said to offer:

Crabbe - 4 years/40-46 million
Harkless - 3 years/24 million
Leonard - 3 years/27 million

Target:

Whiteside or Horford to go all in
Biyombo and Ezeli

very nice!

unless I am reading that wrong, they are suggesting the same thing I did with going after whiteside for the max and then get to the cap with adding biyombo as well.

A s&t of Crabbe for Kanter (or Ibaka) would work really well for both teams.

Would OKC do that? Would we?

You all know, that I don't know much, but if it were me in charge, I would look for more 2 way players. It just so happens that Al Horford is one of the best 2 way players in the league.

So, I would hope and pray that we could convince him to sign here. Then I would go after
A s&t of Crabbe for Kanter (or Ibaka) would work really well for both teams.

I would not if I were OKC. For Kanter anyway

I don't think they keep all three of Harkless, Crabbe and Henderson. Which 2 do they keep? Blazers need more impact.....more quality over quantity.

Dame - 36 / CJ - 12 / Frazier??
CJ - 24 / Crabbe - 24 / Connaughton
Harkless - 32/ Crabbe 6 / Aminu 10 / Montero
Aminu - 24 / Davis - 24 / Vonleh / Alexander
Plumlee - 24 / Leonard - 24

Dame - 36
CJ - 36
Crabbe - 30
Harkless - 32
Aminu - 34
Davis - 24
Plumlee - 24
Meyers - 24

That is 8 players with minutes (none over 36) and no Hendo. Also, no minutes for Vonleh which doesn't help develop him and Montero has the best skills of any of the SF options so would like to see him have a chance to develop that raw potential.

If Portland does bring in someone, it need to be an impact upgrade and we might have to see guys we thought could contribute be moved as there is only room for 9 players to get minutes at the max on a consistent basis with maybe mop up/spot minutes for # 10-13.

The Greg Monroe project didn't really take off in Milwaukee. Would Neil revisit that in a trade? Rumors had him available at the deadline for the right price. He would be a nice offensive addition. He's a poor defender, but the Blazers don't seem to care about that (I don't mean that as a slam) 17.1 next year. If they get rid of a few cap holds, they could get him plus someone else.

A s&t of Crabbe for Kanter (or Ibaka) would work really well for both teams.

Would OKC do that? Would we?

not after this season where they are finding out that he is playing better than ibaka
I wouldn't try and get ibaka either though cause he seems to have hit an early decline.
