You posted this because you know this tweet is dumb right? Jones was in their rotation playing really well for them when he got injured (neck). Then the Heat went on a tear. When Jones was back healthy the Heat's rotation was set and Jones was left out. That's not too surprising for a guy who went undrafted, couldn't get in the game his first two seasons and took on a bench role with the Heat the last two seasons. Those kind of guys, if they go out of sight they go out of mind. That's all that happened. Our team and almost every NBA analyst thinks this will be a break out year for him here getting starter's minutes, I agree with them but we'll have to wait and see. I like how this tweet fails to mention that he had a steal per game in the regular season in just 23 minutes a game. It also fails to mention that Jones' field goal percentage at 52.7% last season would be great for a big man and that he's a wing.

If we wanted to use that tweet's logic then we just hit the lotto because Jones shot 44% from three and had 2.2 steals and 1.6 blocks per 36 minutes in the playoffs, talk about the ideal 3 and D forward.

6 months later...

wow thats crazy.

I got a stupid neighbor who says he doesnt believe Covid is a big deal at all and everyone is overreacting.
Lungs may never fully recover, but the Ohio State head sports doctor said, this is the average recovery timeline. Basically if a player gets Covid, after two weeks, they won't be much better than a G league player.

So... Kawhi is an entitled dick:

Before every Clippers game last season, the team’s training staff would honor Kawhi Leonard’s request and create a private space for his pregame routine.

The staffers would enter and take over that space for roughly 20 to 45 minutes, according to multiple team and league sources. On the road, there were occasions when the space they occupied was the female staffers’ locker room. That also happened sometimes before a doubleheader at Staples Center when the changing of the court limited the availability of the Los Angeles Kings’ locker room, where Leonard normally warmed up privately.

Various Clippers players, coaches and staffers were aware of the arrangement and some felt uneasy about it. While there appeared to be no sexist intent, the visual of women staffers being unable to use their locker room to use the bathroom, to change clothes or to access their personal belongings while Leonard stretched did not go unnoticed. At least one player mentioned it to a confidant and at least one staffer complained about it to coworkers. It was an awkward arrangement, but drawing too much attention to it risked being seen as going against Leonard, the team’s unquestioned star, in the eyes of the organization.

“What were they going to do about it?” one league source said. “It’s Kawhi.”
.....
On and off the court, the players never established the requisite chemistry, continuity or trust to win a championship in their first year together. The organization estimated it could layer superstars on top of the core group of returning role players to win a title, but it awfully misjudged the internal blowback over everything from playing time to preferential treatment to personality differences.

“How do you ever build a strong team with that shit going on?” one team source said. “I thought from the beginning, ‘We’re doomed. Kawhi wants too much special treatment.’”
.....
But according to multiple league sources, the perks the Clippers gave Leonard and George began to compromise the standard of the culture they had built over the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons — the very culture that the Clippers used, in part, to attract Leonard and George to Los Angeles.

Some of those perks included:

• Leonard and George were the only players to have their own personal security guards and trainers.

• Leonard and George had power over the team’s practice and travel schedule, leading teammates to believe Leonard canceled multiple practices.

• Leonard was allowed to live in San Diego and commute from there, which often made him late for team flights.

• Leonard and George typically didn’t speak to the media until at least 45 minutes after games concluded, under the guise of postgame treatment or workouts. This usually resulted in their teammates speaking with the media first, and for longer, essentially becoming the public voices of the team.

• Teammates also believed that Leonard and George were able to pick and choose when they played. Not only did they sit out games entirely, but also at times they accepted or declined playing timein the moment.

Starting to think maybe Tony Parker et. al. had a point...

Really, it took this for people to question whether it was Kawhi or the Spurs -- the most professional franchise of the past two decades -- who was the abrasive element? If Toronto hadn't won the championship, I'm sure they'd be feeling the scorn more than the warm memories, too.

Da fuq? Teams will have 5 fewer home games than in the past. That is $5 mil in lost revenue. Their number ( losing $36 mil) makes no sense.

yeah, the number is wrong based upon their assumptions. It should read 41M in lost revenue, not 36M

"Gate" - food, beer, wine, soft drinks, parking, souveniers, licensed apparel, ticket sales, etc. Seems like it makes quite a bit of sense. The only revenue left is TV contracts.

I don't think he was questioning the $1 mil number. The quote is confusing as to intent and is wrong either way. If the intent is to say that there will be five fewer home games this season, then that's a loss of $5 mil over what a regular season would gross. OTOH, if the intent is to say that there won't be any revenue from home games at all this season due to no attendance as a result of Covid-19, then Wisenheimer is right. Teams will be losing $41 mil off of what a normal season of home games would generate.

Thank you, that was the point I was trying to make.

Only if you assume that there won’t be fans at games for the entire season.

right...that was the assumption they were basing their number on

I'm really not sure what they are using as the definition of 'gate', but the last estimate I saw was 1.2M per home game, on average. So, about 50M in lost gate revenue, on average. But I'm thinking that would not include revenue from parking, food & beverage, and merchandising sales. So it might be quite a bit higher than 40-50M in lost revenue.

might even be more than the 61M Portland has to pay Dame and CJ this season

Personally, I think we'll see fans at the games by April or so, so the losses may be somewhat less that. You know, I think that Ms. Allen probably has enough dough to cover the temporary shortfall. You know who's going to pay for it in the long run: fans. You can bet that ticket prices will go up significantly once Covid is in the rearview mirror in order to help recoup the lost revenue.

Jody Allen probably won't worry much about the loss from Blazer home games considering Forbes says she's probably losing 25M/game from the Seahawks. That could be around 200M for the NFL season. And that wouldn't include lost playoff revenue

it's relative of course, but she's likely going to 'feel' the loss of a quarter billion dollars in revenue from her sports holdings

LeBron's extension came out of nowhere.

Of course, but I think you're thinking of it in too short of a timeframe. The Blazers are estimated to be worth $1.85 billion. The goal has to be to get through Covid while maintaining the Blazers' brand so that there will be fan interest in buying tickets and merchandise, at higher prices of course, once the pandemic ends.

Only if you assume that there won’t be fans at games for the entire season.

And the assumption fails to take into account that some states may allow less-than-full capacity crowds.

At least some of that is surely offset by operating costs when everything is up and running.

Short story, it's a super complicated mini-economy that cannot be captured remotely accurately in a tweet.

sure....I know that

I was just commenting on that tweet, the assumptions it made, and the details it omitted

I’m close with the Toronto TV guys and they told me that the Raptors bent over backwards to do special shit for him. Letting him bring his girl on the team plane which absolutely forbidden. Hiring his childhood friends. Crazy shit!

Disagree fans will pay extra.

The NBA has been trying to maximize revenue already.... its not like they had room the last few years to jack up ticket prices and demand would stay the same. Many arenas had tons of empty seats. Increase prices and they may lose enough seat sales total revenue goes down.

The NBA will charge you every penny they can pre during and post pandemic.

So rest assured you won't be paying extra post covid. You already were.

Yet miami made no priority to sign him but quickly signed Meyers Leonard to the same amount we gave Jones Jr..

Now that you mention it, it's a heightened version of what Portland went through with Aldridge toward the end ... imagine having two divas like that on one team in SA! I'm suddenly very impressed that they kept it together as well as they did.

Toronto did everything they could to make Kawhi feel fully embraced in free agency, and he treated them like a nasty old gym sock.

If you hate on KLeonard, you should be hating on Jordan - he was worse.
