That would be malpractice. I'm all for trading Grant to get salary relief - but theres no way its worth giving up first round pick value or swaps or a portion of that.

Next summer Grant will be a year away from an expiring contract and we have no concerns of hitting the luxury tax or any 1st/2nd apron anytime soon. Also need to see what happens with Jrue - possible we flip him by next year. We're now locked into taking on $0 next season from Ayton $35 million deal so thats space as well.

Plus the cap has been going up 10% every year, and will continue to do so with the new TV deal, so Grants deal has declined as a portion of the cap every season.
 
Ironically, I think expanding his skills and role has been bad for Grant's value. If he could go back to regarding himself as what he was in Denver, a 5th man fill-in-the-gaps type, he'd have a lot more value. But he thinks the ball should be in his hands with time to create, and nobody but him wants that.

I agree. He is actually better at creating his own shot than I thought he would be when they first got him. And at times, I don't mind him doing it, but he did it way too often.

The way I interpreted his exit interview, it sounded like he was asked to be more of a 3 and D type player, which makes sense with Deni on the floor. If he doesn't like it, too bad. Maybe if he came off the bench, he could create a little more when playing with the 2nd unit.
 
Probably stretch grant now.....Or Trade him to Milwaukee
 
unlike Simons and Ayton, Grant actually fits into the apparent vision and direction of the roster: length and no weak links on defense

in fact, the 2023-24 Grant would be really good in the rotation; the 2024-25 Grant...not so much. In his first 2 seasons with Portland, Grant shot over 40% on three's and posted a TS% somewhere around .585-.590. And while he's not a lockdown defender, he's serviceable and versatile. His rebounding weakness won't be as much of an issue on next year's roster

the question is, can the 2023-24 Grant show up next season?

The thing I don't like about Grant is that he's sticky - that is, he holds onto the ball. I don't think he's selfish, I just don't think he reads the game fast enough. That makes him totally out of step with what we're trying to do. Ironically, the much-maligned Kris Murray seems better at moving the ball. I want Grant GONE.

Good question. I think if his agent is unsuccessful in finding him a home that he prefers (and the Blazers agree to) maybe he will
be content with doing whatever is best for the team. I agree he would fit in with Deni and Tou in a 3 forward rotation....if he accepted the role.

Yeah, if he finds he has no value, then he will have to create value for himself and play better.
 
If he accepted a bench roll until we could trade him I’d be good with Grant off the bench. I wonder if he’d be more accepting of the roll if they promised to get him to a winner when they could.

* touches/game: Simons 65.1...Avdija 64.5...Scoot 59.8...Sharpe 52.2...Camara 44.2...Grant 41.0...Banton 37.8...Thybulle 29.9

* avg sec/touch: Scoot...4.52...Simons 4.49...Banton 3.78...Sharpe 3.42...Avdija 3.07...Grant 2.55...Camara 1.99...Thybulle 1.94

* avg dribbles/touch: Scoot 4.01...Simons 4.00...Banton 2.94...Sharpe 2.86...Avdija 2.25...Grant 1.74...Thybulle 1.33...Camara 1.14

so, what I'm seeing is that Grant was 3rd (by only 18 sec/game) in average minutes; but he was 6th in average touches, average sec/touch, avg dribbles/touch, and in total avg time of possession. I'm not seeing the 'stickiness' you're seeing

and of course, there's one other average stat that adds some critical context:

* points/touch: Sharpe .355...Grant .352...Simons .296...Avdija .262...Camara .256...Thybulle .251...Banton .221...Scoot .212

that last stat kind of adds some whoa! context about Sharpe and Grant. Obviously, that doesn't account for playmaking; running the offense. Assists and turnovers need to be factored in somewhere. I'm not sure what would be the best way

Last season, in spot-up plays, Grant led the team in points/play and percentile ranking. That was 35% of his offense. So that's an argument for him allowing the team to create his offense rather than him trying to create it himself

in other words, as bad as Grant seemed last season, in some ways he was still really effective. And that was even more true in 2023-24

I get it, Grant became toxic to a lot of fans Blazer entertainment value. Simons and Ayton were toxic for me for at least 2 years
 
This could be sacrilegious but Id do - Grant for Rozier, Love & Larsson. Rozie, Love are on last year of contacts. If you want to move JG going to have to take back some salary, but 1 year's not so bad.

While interesting stats (thanks) its kind of hard to quantify Rasta complaint. These stats include guys bringing up the ball and initiating offense. While Grant only really touches the ball when the team is further in the shot clock and near a shot attempt.

I hadn't really noticed Grant as "sticky". Even if he was I think it might depend what his accepted role on the team is. The last 3 years he has basically been slotted as the #2/#3 offensive option. If he's off the bench and clearly not so high in the pecking order would he change his contributions? Really not sure.

Grant has had a number of times he's played very effective two way basketball. Yes at times for the Blazers but also prior in Denver and on Team USA. So I do think theres a chance he could find such a role here. Will be hard work both from Cronin, Billups, and Grant to get him at that level.

Question, if Grant was making half of what he's making, how would you see him as part of this team?

I think he’s gonna be unhappy coming off the bench….. or I’m going to be unhappy if he’s starting.

I'd see him as fine coming off the bench behind better players, taking up a reasonable share of the cap and vastly more tradable

He seemed pretty unhappy at the end. Didn't like his role either I believe. So can't see him being too happy with a bench role.

Is it our opinion of better players or his opinion?

I'm sure he'd be fine backing up Giannis - but he probably sees himself as better than Camara/Deni/Sharpe/etc.

That’s my biggest concern right now. Not his contract. I’m worried about his attitude and about any obligation that Chauncey might feel towards him.

I assume every player wants to play and sees themselves as deserving minutes, but it's the coach's and management's opinions that matter as to who gets them. Why in the world would you think our opinion matters?

Sorry - I don't think ours matters - that was my question - who's opinion of better would Grant consider when you said he'd be happy to backup a better player?

If it's the coaches opinion it's probably fine.

If it's Grants opinion of who's better we might have issues with him as a backup.

Seems like last year Grant had a lot of issues accepting other as better or better at creating offense.

I did not say that. I said he'd be fine as a backup to better players, meaning Deni and Camara. How is that me saying he'd be happy about it?

I don’t think Grant gets traded the longer this goes on. His contract is too long for contenders to take on in trades. Joe probably values him as a vet next to Jrue and a 3 and D PF
