I think the Moda Center renovations and therefore the team being locked in to stay here for the next 20 years are about buttoned up. The county is on board, the state already passed its part of the funding and there seem to be only 2 or 3 out of the 12 person city council who are not on board.

I hope they just get it done soon so Dundon moving the team won't be part of his cheapskate narrative anymore.

maybe....but I think your optimism might be a little premature

some City counselors are objecting the the requirement they sign NDA'a. Sure seems like NDA's shouldn't be part of a scheme to spend public money

**************************************************************************************

and considering that the City is facing a 172M budget shortfall I'd imagine that some opposition will begin to coalesce when the cuts are proposed. The police department is apparently facing a 20M cut

the notion that a city facing a budget shortfall of 172M at the same time they are scrambling to come up with 150M to sink into the Moda Center is not a good look

there is reported to be a lot of opposition to the proposal of raiding the clean-energy fund:

******************************************************************

something else too....this steady drip drip drip of cheapskate Dundon actions is not going to help things at all. People can dismiss the things he's done as inconsequential, and maybe they are, individually. But when 8 or 9 things Dundon has done in 3 weeks all break the same direction, there's a cumulative impact on perception.

and Chris Mannix is apparently planning on releasing more information about the weird cost-cutting next week

I've read the articles. It's two out of the twelve on the city council that are willing to go on record and they aren't alluding to any of their fellow council memebers having a problem with what's going on. The reporting seems to indicate that there was a third city council member but now that one won't return calls.

I don't think it's optimism. They said they had the votes at the state, county and city levels the entire time this has been in the news and despite this reporting suggesting that there might be some holdup, they only have 1/6 of the lawmakers on record saying that they aren't cool with how things are being conducted.

The paranoia of blazer fans needs to be studied.

The media kept talking about how a new owner, whoever they are, would come in a want the books clean, do things their way/hire the people they want and try to cut some of the fat (like honestly, do we need 2 mascots?!?)

And thats what he's doing.

And already people are talking like it means the team is secretly being set up to move...because 20 years ago *in a completely different scenario* it happened in Seattle.

So apparently the Allen trust and the league, which admitted that the Seattle move was a blemish and is pretty much going to go back there, is plotting with Dundon to alienate the fans so they can move?

The amount of "alienating" that he's doing is not nearly as big as people think, and only an issue for fans who are already convinced the team has been 2 seconds away from moving for years or believe everything they read as gospel truth.

The track record of the guys who are spreading this shit is dubious at best, but all the sudden now we're supposed to believe the likes of Canzano, Dwrong and Danny Marang??

Sensationalism sells and common sense and logic gets ignored.

And like I said, the situation is *not* even close to what the Sonics situation was.

But paranoias gonna paranoia.

Do they "Cut The Cat" or 'Chop Down Doug Furry" (whatever they call him?).
my guess is Doug will be the one cut, since Blaze has already been established.

It’s gotten a lot worse overall since Covid to now I’ve noticed. Its a shame, just not in Portland but worldwide it just seem like negativity is pushed every way you turn and in comments online.

Negativity gets more clicks and interactions sadly. Portland fans in general are always posting negative crap in the comments just because that’s the Portland thing to do it seems nowadays. Heck even Deni still gets crap when its a social media post about him because of his background

But hey social media has now given people and trolls a platform to post nonsense 24/7 so it’s the new norm.

while it's easy to say things like 'portland gonna portland', or 'sensitive soccer mom fanbase/media back at it!', I dont think this response is at all unique to portland at all, in a bigger market there would be way more media covering the team and thus more coverage of this type of minutae.

we're not that special.

othwerise, why would national media give a rat's ass what's going on in portland?

dundon can't spend $100K in oregon lobbying public officials for loads of public dollars towards a revenue-generating asset, state without sarcasm that the private part of a public/private partnership is simply keeping the team in pdx (an unsubtle inference towards relocation)—and then be at all surprised that the public—including local and national media—are going to ignore a bunch of silly DOGEian moves while all of this is taking place.

he should have kept up the status quo budget through the end of the season and handled his business in the offseason. doing all of this midseason freaked out every single legacy employee in the org, including ones that are adjacent local media, and is taking place amid a media window in which march madness is over and the NFL/NCAAF are in their offseason.

maybe he thinks the NBA is covered like the NHL?

(i've stated before here, I think the cost-cutting antics are a purposeful public display of, 'don't come to us for private investment in the area, we are a scrappy operation and already dropped 4.5B collectively just to buy the team' while the arena funding deal is being negotiated.)

you sure seem to spend more time railing about other fans than talking about the Blazers. We all need a hobby, right?

I'm not sure what percentage of Blazer fans are paranoid about the Blazers relocating in the next few years. I don't think it's a a substantial percentage. Every once in a while I've thought it might be a possibility, but it has always been a remote one; kind of like a blizzard in Miami. And it's still a very remote possibility. And it sure got a lot more remote when the NBA approved two more teams joining the league, especially with the odds the new teams will be Las Vegas and Seattle. That really knocked the pins out from under the Blazers moving possibility. They won't be moving to Fargo

what I've mainly objected to is the rushed paranoid half-baked funding scheme for the Moda. All these yes-men in state and local politics capitulated to the tried-and-tru grift that Silver, the NBA, and Dundon were running: "cough up public money or we might take our marbles and go somehwere that will". Even though I've been a Blazer fan from the 1st season of the franchise, when I see a grift like that my gut response if 'fuck you guys'.

I remember the news....seems like it was less than 2 years ago, when it came out that the city was 'buying' The Moda for a dollar, I wondered if it was a really stupid decision. The building was essentially 30 years old at the time and never had a major or even minor renovation. Delayed maintenance and deferred upgrades are always a massive can of worms in an arena like the Moda; or in any massive commercial building for that matter

maybe all of these ridiculous petty pointless cheapskate moves Dundon is making is him firing shots across the bow of the state-city-county as part of his negotiating strategy on the Moda. His way of avoiding putting any of his skin in the game. If so, then yeah 'fuck this guy'
