Geeze thought this was legit at first...

Don't see any way an FSU undefeated isn't in. Would be shocked if a 1 loss team is in the top 3 actually.

Id think 4 is Texas, then Bama, Georgia, OSU. But I guess any of those four could make it in.
Dude it’s done. That is legit. The top 4 is Michigan, Washington, Texas, Bama.

it seemed to be something of a consensus that if Oregon beat Washington, the only way they could get left out was if Bama beat Georgia. The thinking was that the committee would make sure an SEC was in, and putting Bama in meant Texas had to be in. So it would have been undefeated FSU vs 1-loss Oregon for the last spot. And eastern bias would win the day for FSU
Makes sense. Yeah I actually think a 1 loss Oregon would've been extremely unlikely to make it in when you lay out that scenario.

Also that Utah and USC wins are unimpressive now and the Beavs fell below 20 the Ducks would've had only one quality win - against a team that also beat them.

Cant imagine if UW or UO or any PAC team went undefeated and didn't make it. People would've lost their minds.

It's not like FSU is an irrelevant program with little history. Was the national champ 3 times in recent decades.

as a Duck fan, I'm not really caring about the Bowl game, whatever it is and whoever it's against. I might care more when the game arrives, but probably not.

* to start with, I don't think the players will care that much. The season ended with a huge disappointment and a non-playoff bowl game will seem like a door prize

* the next thing will be the opt outs, and I think there could be plenty. I can see a scenario where Bo Nix, Jordan Burch, Brandon Dorlus, Bucky Irving, Khyree Jackson, JPJ, Terrance Ferguson, and others opt out. Just about all of Oregon's elite talent. That's happening more and more to teams not in the playoffs. The bowl game becomes meaningless with an opportunity for the NFL on the horizon

* if Bo opts out, and right now I'd say it's 50-50, the assumption is it would be Ty Thompson getting his first start. Not so fast my friend. There's a very real possibility that Oregon goes after a QB in the portal; in fact I think it's next to certain. For example, if Oregon get Cam Ward to transfer in, Ty may finally decide to transfer. That woud essentially be Oregon's coaches telling him they don't trust him as the QB. If that happens, then the only scholarship QB on the roster would be true freshman Austin Novosad....Yikes!

* it's also entering open season on assistant coaches. What happens with roster players if their position coach leaves for another job and the transfer portal is still open?

I don't understand why the transfer portal is before bowl games. Totally takes away from many bowl games. Why not have it a month later.

Hell some year we might see teams in the CFP with guys transferring out and missing the playoffs. Maybe an unexpected injury or who knows what could've had them lead a team to a title.

the December portal is based upon academic calendars. It allows players to transfer and enroll for winter term or the 2nd semester, which in turn allows them to participate in spring football

I wouldn't anticipate Oregon to even pretend this thing is anything but a developmental game for the young guys.

I'm not sure winning any bowl game matters much outside of the CFP.

I agree but losing to a G5 team is not a great look, no matter the circumstances.

guys.

I'm not sure winning any bowl game matters much outside of the CFP.

it's been trending that way for years now

non playoff bowl games will mean even less next year with the 12 team playoffs. That will place 11 bowl games into the playoff format and it's pretty certain most will be perpetually in the playoffs

Rose
Fiesta
Orange
Cotton
Sugar
Peach

those seem like locks

then there are the maybe locks like:

Holiday
Alamo
Gator
Liberty
Sun

Yep. There should be about 8 "Bowl Games" as a part of the CFP.

Everything else is baloney. Of course, the Fiesta bowl should be part of that...

That's a huge disappointment having a bowl matchup with Liberty, for me, and I would think for the Ducks also. Recruits can look forward to a matchup like that if they go to Oregon? How did that happen? Oregon is a great TV draw. Why couldn't they find then a better opponent?

Last year SC lost to Tulane, I could see Oregon losing to a full strength motivated Liberty. Isn't Liberty the U that the religious nut founded?

yes

one thing though is that it's been reported that Liberty's QB is entering the portal

Liberty? No Co-Ed dorms Jerry Falwell Liberty? Fuck me that is just insulting to have to play them. They should just play the scrubs, seriously.

Yeah, I don't think you really thought that through. How often does a program like Liberty go 13-0? What recruits will think about (if they win ) is playing for a team that wins 12 games and brings home a Fiesta Bowl trophy. You have to remember the ages of the recruits and what is important to them. 12 wins is impressive.

5 things to know about Liberty, Oregon’s Fiesta Bowl opponent

1) Kaidon Salter is third in pass efficiency, second among QBs in rushing

Flames quarterback Kaidon Salter is third nationally in passing efficiency (182.44), with 31 touchdowns to five interceptions. Salter has also rushed for 1,064 yards and 12 scores, second nationally among QBs behind only LSU’s Jayden Daniels.

2) Quinton Cooley leads the nation’s leading rushing offense
A Wake Forest transfer, Cooley has 1,322 yards and 16 touchdowns. Combined with Salter’s 1,064 yards and a pair of 500-yard rushers, Liberty leads the country in rushing offense (302.92 ypg.).

3) Jamey Chadwell is in his first season
After going 39-22 in five years at Coastal Carolina, Chadwell has led Liberty to a 13-0 record and Conference USA championship in his first season. Chadwell was the national coach of the year in 2020.

4) CJ Daniels is an explosive receiver
Daniels has 47 receptions for 988 yards and 10 touchdowns this season. He has 18 catches for 20-plus yards, including 12 of 30-plus yards, which is tied for seventh nationally.

5) Tyren Dupree has more than twice as many tackles as any other Liberty defender
Dupree has 116 tackles (8.5 for loss), with 2.5 sacks, two interceptions and three pass breakups. A high school quarterback, Dupree has more than twice as many tackles as any other Liberty defender and ranks 19th nationally.

Who?

But what exactly is happening to Alabamas brand?
That’s why I laughed out loud literally when the original response said their “Brand” will be fine.

They will be.

And so will Oregon.

It's a REALLY easy concept. It's okay that youre wrong about it. You'll be right about other things just like I and several others were right about this one.

Reading more about the FSU snub its just very surprising.

The whole point of the 4 team playoff was to avoid that situation where there are 3 undefeated teams and the BCS computers had to pick only 2 which could lead to a split champ. Or multiple 1 loss teams with too much reliance on irrelevant stats and little eye test criteria.

I definitely think Texas should've gone over Bama with their H2H win.

Is there any way if FSU wins big over Georgia they can get a share of the national champ? Never imagined we'd see that possibility with a 4 team playoff.
