That's not the only thing that FoS means. You are allowed to have different thoughts, and religious practices. You are not required to practice certain activities that are religious in nature if you so chose not to, or certain practices that go against beliefs you have (both religiously or just that you have).

You are NOT required, by ANY law, to be present when the national anthem is being sung, or presented. And if the reason you have is religious, you are within your rights. And if it's not religious, you're still within your rights.

I'm sure if we went through your posts we would find many that you would never say alone to a player's face. It's a forum, exaggerated hyperbole is a requirement. If we suddenly enacted a standard of, "don't say something about a player that you wouldn't say to their face" this place would become very boring.

mouthing off to a player in an arena (which gives you a lot of safety in numbers) is not the same as saying someone should be fouled hard because they hold a different belief/perspective than you do.

To me, calling for a player to be fouled hard or saying they should leave the country is something you say anonymously, because you're protected by the fact that Dion Waiters will never see this. Saying something like that to the person, to his face without 19K other people, security and cameras, is another.

Saying you refuse to respect a national tradition my be well within the law but so is saying to someone they will love playing in Turkey. No disrespect to Turkey. Pays better than the D league. Sometimes when you attain some celebrity in this country you get booed off the stage.

That says that Muslims aren't allowed to stand for or sing national anthems in any country, not just the U.S. Even in Muslim countries.

When most people read this latest Waiters news, they assume that not standing is a way to show opposition to the U.S. war machine. Not true. Even Muslims in Muslim countries don't stand, or even have any national anthems at all.

First, you're conflating freedom of speech and freedom of religion.

Second, you seem to be misinterpreting both what I want and why I want it.

freedom of speech and religion are related. His religion (or so he claims) says he shouldn't do something, and it's his right (speech) to not do something.

Speech is not limited to talk or print. It's also actions.

The guy doesn't want to be present in the national anthem, and some people are proposing he be punished by hard fouls, hates/disrespects/dislikes the US and should leave.

If you go to a Muslim country and disrespect their cultural mores, you can be imprisoned and killed. And yes, when I was in Afghanistan I observed Ramadan fasting out of respect for the people I was working with. I wouldn't have been imprisoned for not doing so, but I would not have had the impact I did on the work I was doing.

(Full disclosure: I semi-cheated b/c the end of Ramadan was by 2-week leave. Once I left country I went back to normal. So I didn't go a whole month.)

These are always touchy subjects. Am I being over the top criticizing Waiters? Sure I am. I've traveled to many places where my beliefs didn't attach to customs but respected the customs. I wouldn't use holy water receptacles for ash trays even if I'm not Catholic. I wouldn't wear muddy boots in a Zendo although I'm not a Buddhist. The list goes on. It's a silly point but as an NBA fan I overreact to shit all the time

On March 12, 1996, the NBA suspended Abdul-Rauf for his refusal to stand, but the suspension lasted only one game. Two days later, the league was able to work out a compromise with him, whereby he would stand during the playing of the national anthem but could close his eyes and look downward. He usually silently recited a Muslim prayer during this time.

the difference is that Abdul-Rauf was suspended for his disrespect, and made to stand in respect for the anthem, even if he didn't pay attention and prayed during that time.

This is true. however, we're not a Muslim country (and we're not supposed to be a "Christian" country, in that religious isn't supposed to play a role in the laws of the land), so I'm not sure it plays a role here.

Not being present at the NA (being absent from the line of teammates when they are presenting the national anthem) does not mean you are disrespecting the country.
