Jehovah's Witness refuse to salute the flag because they believe it is similar to worshiping a
an idol. Confusing a customary show of respect for worshiping is rather odd. I don't think anyone has a problem with participating in the National Anthem. err except Muslims.

dion waiters, is, in fact, a dumbass. but i just wanted to say that there are millions upon millions of regular, super chill muslims who don't preach their religion and live life like everyone else. i come from a muslim household (my family is quite agnostic, to be honest), so it'd be quite sad to see americans falling back into the trap of muslim bashing and ignorance. what a few governments and extremists do is not representative of the vast majority of people (the US government, ahem...), so let's all relax and enjoy dion waiters' inefficient ass and be happy the blazers never drafted him.

I still think this is a lot less about Islam and more about what the individual would prefer not to do. Maybe it's due to having a distaste for a country that has allowed him to get a head on life. He's using his religion as an excuse.

Quotes can be taken out of context. Look what Mike Golic did to Bill Simmons recently.

I can't even tell you how many times I recorded a quote in a locker room, so I was fully aware of the context of the quote, only to see if printed in the Oregonian the next day completely take out of context.

Very well said. No offense to the Muslim community but I did enjoy bashing Waiters. Rasheed Wallace is a Muslim who stood with his team during the anthem. A lot of Muslim athletes do.

Curious on how you make the distinction between "loving your country" and "the republic". The flag is the symbol of the country..."The republic for which it stands." They seem to be one and the same. Now, I understand the sentiment of your latter clause, but part of the requirements for citizenship are allegiance to the country.

I'm not against Muslim people, I'm against the fùck head that doesn't respect the country he makes millions in. The fact that our country has become so posh for acts of disrespect is beyond me.

I would feel the same way if someone goes to a funeral and decides to sit out the viewing but eat at the reception.

This isn't about "God" or "worshiping the United States". It's about respecting the country that brings you enough freedom to make the choice to stand in respect or wait i. The locker room.

You guys fight the good fight so we have freedom of assembly and speech. To refuse to assemble is part of that freedom. Speech against the government is covered as well. Even burning the flag itself is a form of protected free speech.

Allegiance is to family and friends and neighbors, not to some symbol or a piece of paper.
