Hey, Dion, as long as you're skipping the national anthem . . . why don't you just skip on out of the country?

Because he has the right not to be there when the National Anthem is being played?

Let's just hope that every team he faces gives him an extra shove!

Sure he does, just like I have the right to encourage him to leave the country.

True, you do. But some of the comments in this thread seem to be lacking a sense of reality based thinking. Even if he did flip-flop on his stance (sounds like he was on the court when they NA was sung the next game), wishing violence against him for expressing a different opinion, or wishing he'd leave the country for expressing a different opinion/stance, is a little too close to boot stepping it.

We live in a country that is supposed to have freedoms, even those freedoms that we don't agree with or believe in. I think the response of leaving the country (or those of a similar mentality) are kind of not on par with the event. I.e., a slight over-reaction.

Nah just hard fouls. I hope it happens to him a lot.

Would you be saying that if it was Damian Lillard who said it? Let's say that Damian converted to Jehovah's Witnesses (I don't know if that would prohibit him from playing pro sports, but in this case let's assume it wouldn't), Jehovah's don't believe in singing patriotic songs, or pledging allegiance to flags. Would you be saying that you hope other teams give him extra shoves? Or celebrating when he gets knocked down?

Re: OT - Dion Waiters informs Cavs that he is a Muslim and plans to skip national ant

There's an element of idol worship that may well violate his religious practices.

As Magnifier often says, "Here here." Too bad he and many others don't believe in freedom.

Yep I would. If you don't like this country, then get the fuck out

you're confused about the issue then. It's not about liking the country. I doubt Dion Waiters dislikes the country, it's about a religious belief that says you're not supposed to do something (see: Jehovah's). Not standing for the NA doesn't mean you dislike the country. Otherwise, a LOT of fans who are milling about on the concourse during the singing/presentation of the NA, dislike the country. And the cameramen and women who film the singers, move about and aren't standing at attention, dislike the country.

Lmao you thought it was "here here". I corrected your lack of knowing the english language

If I was a Muslim I would hate america, doesn't really matter though. He's gonna keep cashing those checks.

That's cool. He should get hard foul after hard foul for his entire career.

As for "his religious practices". He worships being idolized, playing a game that takes attention from Allah. He should just say "I will leave the NBA because it's against my religion"

you really should educate yourself on this, because the more you talk the more ignorant you sound.

Of course we have freedoms, but you seem to be missing the bigger picture. It's unseemly for an athlete who is making millions in our country to object to even standing for our national anthem. Jabbar, Alajuwon, and other Muslim players always stood for the anthem, which celebrates our hard-fought battle to gain independence and create the very kind of society that Dion Waiters is enormously profiting from.

I'm sorry that you seem to think the 1st amendment is a hashtag.

They should just pay him in blankets and goats and see how he feels.

and has the right not to stand/be present if that's what he believes.

I may not agree with him, but it's entirely his right to not be present during the anthem. It doesn't mean he doesn't respect those who served, or respect the country, or not believe in the values of country.

Well let's remind him by giving him hard fouls for the rest of his career. The battles he will remember!

Yeah, let's endorse violence to reinforce our beliefs, that's worked so well in the past.

It did. Our country was liberated with violence so he can refuse to stand for the national anthem!

America FUCK YEAH!

Re: OT - Dion Waiters informs Cavs that he is a Muslim and plans to skip national ant

All I would like to hear is some elaboration on the connection in his mind between Islam and the national anthem. It seems premature to judge him without that.

Someone not being present for the national anthem is not the same as fighting the British to gain independence.

I know that you're mostly putting on a character about this, because you wouldn't have the balls to say it to his face alone, but still, the mindset is a troubling.

Re: OT - Dion Waiters informs Cavs that he is a Muslim and plans to skip national ant

This guy's been living in a cloud of leprechaun farts and unicorn droppings for years. I mean, from playing only 2 years of HS ball, to not starting in 2 years at Syracuse (while averaging 9ppg and 2 apg and playing Jimmy Boeheim D (cue MM)), to not working out for anyone predraft due to a "lottery promise" and STILL earning CLE the Kahn Memorial Dumb Drafting Decision Award for 2012 (lessee, would you rather have Soup Juggler or Lillard/Robinson/H.F. Barnes/Drummond/Henson/Ross?), making #4 slotted money on a craptacular team where you're not scrutinized for dumb play and gross counting stats make you a top 5 rookie awardee? Then he gets the best player in 20 years to show up on his team and he wants to play Me-Ball? GTFOH

And now he wants to not stand for the national anthem? I get it if you don't want to say "under God" in the Pledge, or "affirm" instead of "swear" an oath, but WTF is up with clowning on the National Anthem?

I agree with this. Many religions including judaism don't permit swearing an oath to anyone but their god, but not peacefully standing in silence during the anthem is just disrespectful. It's not a debate, it's a basketball game.

Re: OT - Dion Waiters informs Cavs that he is a Muslim and plans to skip national ant

I get what Julius is talking about and agree with him. He can do what he wants. I just love the drama and the distraction. Lebron is trying to get the team focused on good team basketball and Waiters seemed to go out of his way to gain attention after he lost his starting position. I love it! The Blazers played a small part in causing the Cavs some early season turmoil and I love that too.

Waiters making this announcement doesn't change how I feel about the guy because I've never cared for him. I'm just enjoying the drama.

Actually I would. You haven't seen me in games. I have no problem telling people to their face about what I feel. I've done it before.

imho, it doesn't matter what the connection it. Being present for the NA is not required. It is not a crime to excuse yourself from the area when the anthem begins, just as it is not a crime to remain silent with your arms at your side during the national anthem.

It's that whole pesky freedom of speech thing. You know, having the right to think different than others and not be forced to leave the country.

btw, I know that you were asking for clarification, I'm agreeing with the point you made just adding to it.
