OT: Will the Rockets make the playoffs?

And there should also be penalties for pointless whining. If you don't like the topic of the thread, don't read it. If you don't like the OP's posts, put him on ignore. No one forced you to open this thread. You knew both the subject and the identity of the poster when you opened the thread. You chose to do so and you also chose to respond. No one to blame but yourself and you own lack of self control.

This comes from the same poster that after the Blazers started 22-4 last year kept insisting they were a mediocre team that benefited from an easy schedule, would finish .500 and miss the playoffs. Oh the irony....

As others have pointed out, Houston has had a ridiculously easy schedule, way easier than the Blazers had at this point last year. Hollinger's Playoff Odds don't come out until December, but his current Power Rankings, which factors in strength of schedule and margin of victory, has the Rockets ranked 10th in the Western Conference. So yes, will the Rockets make the playoffs is a legitimate question.

BNM

It actually came out already...

The funny thing is that it shows Houston missing the playoffs

You guys are my heroes.

who said sure fire lock? Eric started this thread when they were 8-3 cause they lost to the Lakers. They are now 11-3 and are winning without their best player. They could miss the playoffs, but there is no reason to think they will at this point
They were 9-3 when I started the thread. Look at the post YOU quoted.

So starting a thread about Portland might not make the playoffs wouldnt be asinine? Same record, injuries could happen.

The Lakers might make the playoffs.

It was 11 games into the season, for fucks sake.

9 + 3= 12

Checkmate.

Go Blazers! 11-3 with injuries bitches!

Here is the OP, well before Hollingers rankings came out. 11 games into the season, or 13% of the season played. To put that inperspective, that is 2 NFL games. Ask Green Bay and New England how they looked early. Saying how horrible they are stating as some kind of fact to back up his post that they would lose to Dallas and the Knicks....which they didn't. Yes their schedule has been easy, the original post was asinine.

Hahahahahahaha!

Blazers have had injuries too by the way. We were without our All Star big man for a game and we won. We were without Batum for 4 games and won all 4. We're a deep talented contender. Houston has no depth and can barely beat Lakers and Sixers at home. And the Rockets have won their last two games. Before that, their playoff odds were even lower! Probably 11th or 12th in West.

Probably 11th or 12th just like they would definitely lose to the Mavs and Knicks?

the hollinger stuff is cool, but it assumes that teams will continue to play exactly as they have up to this point. OKC has an 0.6 chance of making the playoffs in his model.

houston could have been playing down to competition, or allowing a bunch of garbage time buckets to make games closer...i havent watched them much.

unforseen injuries/regression/improvement/clutchness/etc arent factored in (afaik)

that said, i would say that okc has a better chance of making the playoffs than houston, guess we will see though

Just like us

Who is US??? The TRUTH comes out guys! MediocreMan is a Houston fan, not a Portland fan. He referred to the Rockets as "us." I believe he lives in Houston. This makes sense. Thanks for the Freudian slip, Mr MediocreFan. Now we know your true colors.

No way id put up with SlyPokerDog's bullshit if I were a fan of another team.

You seem to have a curious definition of "fan".

Fan = short for fanatic: marked by excessive enthusiasm and often intense uncritical devotion.

So, are you a Blazers fan? You seem to be the exact opposite of that definition. You are constantly ripping on the players, the coaches, the GM and your fellow fans. When I think Mediocre Man, the LAST things I think of are excessive enthusiasm and intense uncritical devotion.

On the other hand, that's EXACTLY what I think of when I think of KingSpeed and Mags.

So, rather than tell Eric his thread is asinine and he's full of bullshit, why not address the topic of this thread? Toss aside your personal opinion of Eric and address that fact the Hollinger's Power Rankings and Playoff Odds both have the Rockets missing the playoffs. It's been pointed out several times that the Rockets low standings in the Hollinger rankings are based on a weak ass SOS and a low ass MOV. If you disagree with Hollinger's projections, please tell us why.

Nah, MM is a Blazers fan. Let's not really go there.

What he isn't is a Blazers Fan fan.

I wouldn't put up with you guys if I was a fan of another team, either.

in all fairness, KS should get some kudos for broaching the subject before hollinger weighed in. he scooped the groupthink, so to speak

KingSpeed is the Adrian Wojnarowski of S2!

Or, maybe since Eric is more famous, that should be:

Adrian Wojnarowski is the KingSpeed of Yahoo Sports!

14 games, 11-3. There, topic addressed and the reason the playoff odds mean nothing to me at this point. Of course the reason I didn't address the playoff odds originally was because they didn't exist when this thread was started.

I'm not trying to argue with you, but why were you using the SOS last season to give proof that Blazers aren't playoff contenders?

The interesting thing to me about using SOS is that, IMO:

If a team's SOS is shit, and they are losing those games, it seems reasonable to conclude the team is shit.

Conversely, if a team's SOS is shit, and they are winning those games, I don't think it "proves" anything, even if the winning margins are slim.

Meanwhile, if the team's SOS is high, and they are winning those games, it's fair to conclude the team is probably pretty good.

Hmm, which of those describes my beloved Blazers?

Well let's see.....with losses to the Mavs, Knicks and Kings, the Rockets are flailing......er wait, you mean they beat those teams? without 3 of their starters? But Eric called it like he saw it?

Hahaha I totally own you. I'm all you think about, MM. I love it!

Oh shit, now I understand what last night was about. I hadn't been reading this thread. I had no idea that MM was upset with Kingspeed.

I would like to apologize to Mediocre Man because I thought he was in a good mood and just playing around last night. I didn't realize that MM was in the midst of a complete meltdown.

Why doesn't someone clue me in when this happens?!?

Now off to edit some insults from some posts...

Since this thread, Houston has been on a tear! Thanks a lot Jinxspeed!

I mean, they're pretty awful. Can barely beat Sixers, can't score 70 against OKC, lose to Lakers. Yes, they're 9-3 right now. They'll lose to Dallas. That's 9-4 and then the Knicks and Kings. They're losses too. So at 9-6, they'll be in trouble with a much more difficult schedule coming up. With teams like Sacramento and NO on the upswing, I just don't see how Houston makes the playoffs. Too much competition. Thoughts?

Bump. It's looking more likely. We'll know more after the next 20 to 25 games.

Is it fair to ask if the Rockets are actually better than the Blazers? Same record, but they beat Memphis and we lost to Memphis? Does this mean the Blazers are in danger of missing the playoffs? I mean we all know the Rockets, missing 3 starters with a 14-4 record arent gonna make it.
