What about defending a&e's right to run their business how they see fit?

I have no issue with A&E "firing" him. It's how their audience reacts to the firing that impacts how they run their business.

Which brings me back to my earlier point, its a stunt. They know their target audience, now they will dress up in the American flag and claim religious persecution. Next weeks ratings double.

I'm with Gorilla. It's fucking retarded to defend obviously bigoted statements on the basis of tolerating religious belief.

I disagree with Robertson's views, by the way, because only because I don't believe in a God or a heaven.

In other words IF you believed in god and you thought he commanded you to murder someone you wouldn't think that action was immoral. I feel sorry for you.

I have no idea what you're trying to communicate to me. Explain it again, please. If God commanded me to murder someone ... huh? I don't believe in the Bible, but the last I checked, murder is a sin in it, too. If Phil Robertson also said that murder was a sin, would you be outraged? :dunno:

you said the only reason you disagree with his views is because you aren't a Christian. You're (perhaps unintentionally) validating the idea that it's ok for morality to be religious-based regardless of harmful prejudices involved.

I'm validating the idea that the Bible calls both murder and homosexuality a sin, literally. I made no other comment on morality and religion, only that in Phil Robertson's religion, murder and homosexuality are both considered sinful acts against God's will. This is a fact, at least in terms of his belief system.

You're not making any sense to me, at least in terms of what I wrote on the board. Seems like you're just trying to put words into my mouth and construct an argument from a false premise.

the OT calls many minutia sinful - things that Christians accept today using various justifications simply because those things so obviously aren't a big deal. Nobody is following the letter of the law. ALL Christians pick and choose parsing the bible based on their own personally derived concepts of morality (and in some cases their own common sense). Murder is universally considered a sin because it's obviously empirically harmful, not because god commanded us not to do it.

or you said something you didn't mean. is the fact that you aren't a Christian really the ONLY reason you don't think homosexuality is immoral? there are absolutely no other factors that affect your view on the matter?

I said the reason I disagree with Robertson is based on his religious beliefs. I don't think homosexuality is immoral because I don't thinks its immoral. I do think murder is immoral.

Thats a good point, however A&E reserves the right to run their business however they see fit. I imagine with the increase popularity they get scrutinized a bit more.

This.

That Phil Robertson is setting the tone for discussion in America is a lot scarier than anything he's saying.

At least he owns up to his opinions. I applaud him. Ain't no ratings gonna make him think in a certain way.

The big deal is people like you saying what he said was stupid and hateful, when it wasn't either of those things.

Defending him for speaking his mind in a non hateful way. Yes, I would defend anyone's right to do that. Hell, I'd defend anyone's right to speak hatefully if they chose to. I may not agree with it, but I would defend it

Way to defend VG for speaking his mind

he's not really setting anything. this is an ongoing conflict that he just made a little bit more polarized.

and Lost in America sucked

there's a difference between defending his right to say what he wants and defending the content of what he says because it's specifically a religious opinion.

Americans have the right to stay ignorant. They have the right to open their mouth and prove their ignorance.

Doesn't mean they are guaranteed to retain employment after publicly demonstrating their ignorance.

Yeah, I have nothing against a liberal's right to stay ignorant.

The whole "I disagree but I will fight for his right to say it" schpiel makes me cringe every time. Its just. so. boring.

And saying homosexual behavior is a sin sure got demonized quickly, that wasnt "hate" 10 years ago. It was common knowledge that god fearing types believed that. Nobody cared.

I dont agree with the guy (if there is a god, I really hope he isn't the one in the old testament) but who cares what religion someone hangs there hat on, there's famous scientologists for gods sake. If he did the interview and said "god told me reptile Obama is gonna steal our cocks inside a bio dome with the jolly green giant because of Chinese imports" does that mean he "hates Chinese people? No, it means he's got a silly religion, big whoop

Whatever

maybe we need a new bible, so we can wear our hair out during prayer, wear different fabrics, eat shellfish, and fuck each others assholes without having to worry about a firey pit of torture for an infinite forever

Bottom line, its a really touchy, hairy situation, but there's a lot of meat to this, we just need to go deeper than we are comfortable going, and be willing to accept what comes next throbbing cock.

This is who some of you are rallying behind, a big fat fake who is using your beliefs to sell you shit.

What about MY first amendment rights?

That video is the first introduction to that show for me. Never heard of it before this. It's probably a lot like Orange County Choppers, where it was mostly fictionalized "drama".

I don't know why anyone cares much about a TV show. Although Deadliest Catch is pretty gnarly.
