Very well said, and I agree. I just thought we were about there already. But your right. Patience. Its not a light switch that is going to change over night. Cultures take time to develop and become a stronghold and have sustainability for the long term.

Yep. And though LAL made some plays today. They are not the Hollywood they once were and a top teir doesnt even look thier direction now.

I don't think this is correct. I am not going to go into all the tax jargon on this but... 11% on 70m is a ton of money. Way more than a guy would spend on
sales tax any where.

Then someone mention the Gulf vs the Pacific Ocean. That is huge one in my view. This North Pacific is damn near the nastiest ocean on earth.
The Gulf, the entire Atlantic seaboard, the Gulf of Santa Catalina and Puget Sound are way more docile and inviting.

You fix the weather, tax situation, complete lack of diversity and virtually nothing to do for a pro athlete and you'll be set.

Even with sales tax, I make a shit ton more here than I did in Portland. Plus, I can write off sales tax at the end of the year.

Now, ask me where I'd rather live, and it's Portland 10 out of 10 times, but ONLY because I lived there. I talk to people here and the perception of Portland is rains, hippies, homeless people, what is there to do?

Absolutely. There are going to be those guys. You here of high school kids wanting to come to Eugene from LA because they want a quieter environment. But it's definitely the exception to the rule.

We do have a harsh ocean, but the tax thing. 11% on 70M is 7.7 mill. Say a player buys a $5 mill home and another $5 in decorations and another mill in transportation vehicles. Thats $11 mill. Cali Sales tax is 7.5%. That would be $825,000. Wash I think is 10.2%? which would be 1.02 mill. Okay. Yeah. Not quite adding up to be a complete offset, but it is still close to a Million dollars difference. Not chump change. Plus,
we are not the only state with an income tax. Ours is higher, but other states have them as well and so combining thier lower rate with thier sales tax might come much closer than these numbers show here. Im having difficulty finding quick income tax rates for other states though.

Nope. Not many places whack you like Oregon. Cal, IL, NY.
Then when you work other states like the NBA guys, it gets even worse. Paying taxes in more than one state really starts to get heavy. Oregon is bad bad to work out of as home base that way.

I like the Artisan nature of Portland, the coffee, wine, beer, food etc... Etc... I like easy access to the mountains and the coast. I don't think many pro athletes in their 20s care about that stuff at all.

I also love the rain, go figure.

Okay but wait. The three places you listed are the three biggest markets in the country and two of the have horrid beaches overall with shittier winters than us. The ONLY thing those teams have over us is size and history. Speaking of Chicago, NY and LA.

so these guys are willing to pay those extra taxations to play in the major markets, but wont to play in a smaller market?

Since the explosion of social media, the large vs small market thing has pretty much become a mute point. I think a lot of it comes down to comfort.

As for those cities, when is the last time they landed a big time FA? Now it's all relationship driven, success, and lifestyle. You can be famous from just about anywhere. Look at Dame

Hell, I don't know! I don't know why anyone would live in Chicago. But then when you talk to a New Yorker, they really don't know why there is anywhere else.
Perhaps the tax doesn't bother some, but it is a big friggin number.

So you are validating my point?

This place is awesome. It comes down to comfort and this place is way more comfortable than most places. I still vehemently disagree about diversity in culture. No we don't have 5 million people so the cultures don't spread as far, but we are far more diverse than most other smaller markets and cities of our size.

What makes OkC more comfortable? Sacramento? Memphis? Milwaukee?

Memphis only has income tax on stuff like interest and dividends of 6%. Not on wages.

They DO have sales tax. 7% for tennessee and 2.25% for the city of Memphis.

But it doesnt fucking matter as much because chandler parsons is not likely to make tennessee his residence. Especially when its probably already florida.

They are all more diverse
3 of them have better weather during the season.
