Portland Signs Georgios Papagiannis to a 10-Day Contract

This is a great signing. No risk with possible high reward. Papagiannis is 7’2”, can really shoot the ball, and is only 20 years old.

How high can any reward possibly be? It's a 10-day contract. We won't hold his Bird rights. If he actually plays (doubtful) and plays well, at the end of 10-days he will be a free agent and can sign anywhere he pleases. Let's assume he plays well (a big assumption), the most we could offer him and stay under the luxury tax is the prorated min. If he does play well, there are other teams that aren't over the cap and bumping up against the luxury tax threshold that could offer him more.

This is basically a no risk, no reward signing. We had to sign someone. Might as well be him...

Don't blame me for this bullshit. That's ethnic profiling.
Sorry it came across that way, that's not what I was claiming. I was purely talking on your love of Greek players.

Do you still follow Kostas Papanikolaou, where is he these days? I still think he was overrated, but I appreciated your entusiasm for him.

Hopefully this experiment is only 10-days long....

I'm really hopping that Portland will pick up Christian Woods out of D-League. I think he has a legitimate chance of being a above average rotational players.

High reward? He will ride the bench for 10 days and will probably never play

Hes kind of a hot head.

Leonard is 7'1, athletic, and can shoot the ball. He's garbage.

The dude is so slow, and doesn't have much upside. He's basically Swanigan, except bigger, twice as slow, with average defense. There's a reason The Kings cut (embarrassingly) cut him and nobody picked him up. Makes more sense than Brandon Rush, but I don't see any big reward with him.

Insurance Hitman for Friday's game.

Just in case Zaza is trying to hurt anyone, we can throw him to do the "dirty work".

Dame will pay the fine, Papagiannis gets suspended, no lost there. But will teach Zaza a lesson.

Do we really care? I assume Neil just wants to take a look at the guy in practice. He has good size and is not a stiff. He is a possible 3rd center on team if they can move Meyer's contract. But its not like we have his rights, so he could just as easily go to another team.

He doesn't look that slow in those SL highlights.

Is he really only 20? Bet he was shaving at 12.

I love highlight vids.

You know what would be better than highlight vids? Lowlight vids.

Why doesn't anyone make lowlight vids? Like the ones that Knicks fan made of Fatty Felton.

Now that's entertainment.

You all should watch that YouTube of him. Sure it is summer league. But there IS some promise there. More than Meyers imo (not that it may be saying much).

Dude is a giant. Aren't something like 1 out of 6 humans who are 7 feet tall current or former NBA players, or something like that?

The good news: Not a single three point attempt in those highlights. Sign him up ;)

His hook shot looks pretty decent!

It was summer league. He was the biggest man on the court.

Caveats aside: After watching his brief highlight reel, I think this is a good use of a 10-day audition contract.

Gotta meet the league min of 14 on the roster (2-way contracts don't count). Trading Vonleh put us at 13. So, look for a revolving door of guys on 10-day contracts going forward. These will all be prorated min contracts that will keep us just under the tax threshold.

This.

Who is signed doesn't matter. They're not likely to play. It's just a technicality.

Papaginnis is a decent athlete relative to his size. I wouldn’t dismiss him just because the Kings did, when have they been known to be smart. Taking him 13th was dumb in itself. I think he’s a better player than Meyers and if he shows something in practice I could see him getting a training camp invite in the fall. At this point that’s all these 10 day guys should be. Tryouts. I like this strategy a lot more than doing favors to agents and signing over the hill players like Brandon Rush.

Agree. I like that they are cycling through players for 10-day contracts - looking for a contributor. There are some others that I would hope that they would give a chance to as well.
