Portland Signs Georgios Papagiannis to a 10-Day Contract (1 Viewer)

Its a cheap way to find a role player. We really don't need a player in this status unless Neil and staff found a diamond for cheap.

We got GP, great! We could use an HOF lockdown PG. Wait, what?

It's just another 10 day contract to get to the league min #players. He's auditioning for a summer league job.

We're going to need PapaG on the bench next season after we trade Meyers, Turner and Aminu for LeBron (trade stolen from SportsAndWhine)

So I went and watched a full papa g game. Slovenia vs Greece from Eurobasket last summer. Papagiannis was a backup the whole tournament but started this game. Slovenia had Dragic and Doncic in their backcourt along with Anthony Randolph up front, so it was a good test for Papagiannis.

What stood out:

- Very good in the pick and roll. It stood out in highlight mixes but I got a better sense of it in an actual game. He can move, sets a mean screen, and has good hands. This is a staple in our offense with Nurkic and Papagiannis can be an option there as well.

- Rim protection. His length really bothered Slovenia and made a big impact...for 3 quarters.

- Conditioning. Papagiannis and Greece has control of the game until the fourth quarter. He was gassed and it was evident. His screens weren’t as sharp and he slowed down considerably.

- Hook shot. He has a hook shot and it’s pretty much unblockable. Problem is it needs more consistency.

- Fire. I’ve seen him get in some altercations in highlights and this game was no different. At around 1:18:00 Doncic got in his face and he didn’t back down.

So pretty much I saw a guy worth developing. He didn’t embarrass himself when left on an island against nba talents and showed he can make an impact on both ends. I thought he was Greece’s best player up until he got tired. If he can get into shape, and as he matures, I think he’s got a place in the NBA. At the very worst he can be an above average backup.

There isn’t one SF in Europe or somewhere that this spot could’ve went to? I find that hard to believe.

Does this make him a RFA after the season? This probably means they want to develop him, which I would agree with.

This is fucking great. Everything is better than garbage Meyers

At what point do they just consider swallowing Meyers’ contract and letting him go

What about stretching his contract?

Stretching his contract means we can't trade his expiring contract starting in the summer of 2019. I think he makes too much to stretch considering it doesn't give us cap space anyway.

But would it get us further away from the hard cap number? Would it allow us to use the full MLE?

I think you're still confused about the hard cap. The Blazers aren't in danger of it unless they do something dumb. I know it doesn't make sense but they are WAY more flexible not getting hard capped. They want to use the tax-MLE not the full one. Then they can still use the TPE's too.

With their free agent situation getting hard capped for using the full-MLE would result in saying goodbye to all but maybe one free agent of ours. It makes zero sense to stretch Meyers, like none.

I’m resigned to the idea that the only way we get rid of Meyers is if we find an equally shitty contract to take on as a project. Since I haven’t found one, we’re probably stuck with him.

I think that he, in combination with our short big man coach, will be in charge of coaching and working out Nurkic.

I'm happy about this signing.

Meyers played a very, very solid 5 minutes last night. This gives the Blazers the flexibility of trading or keeping Meyers. Either is fine with me.
