So I went and watched a full papa g game. Slovenia vs Greece from Eurobasket last summer. Papagiannis was a backup the whole tournament but started this game. Slovenia had Dragic and Doncic in their backcourt along with Anthony Randolph up front, so it was a good test for Papagiannis.
What stood out:
- Very good in the pick and roll. It stood out in highlight mixes but I got a better sense of it in an actual game. He can move, sets a mean screen, and has good hands. This is a staple in our offense with Nurkic and Papagiannis can be an option there as well.
- Rim protection. His length really bothered Slovenia and made a big impact...for 3 quarters.
- Conditioning. Papagiannis and Greece has control of the game until the fourth quarter. He was gassed and it was evident. His screens weren’t as sharp and he slowed down considerably.
- Hook shot. He has a hook shot and it’s pretty much unblockable. Problem is it needs more consistency.
- Fire. I’ve seen him get in some altercations in highlights and this game was no different. At around 1:18:00 Doncic got in his face and he didn’t back down.
So pretty much I saw a guy worth developing. He didn’t embarrass himself when left on an island against nba talents and showed he can make an impact on both ends. I thought he was Greece’s best player up until he got tired. If he can get into shape, and as he matures, I think he’s got a place in the NBA. At the very worst he can be an above average backup.
