How about a three way

Dedmon and Covington to Portland.

Bogdanovic to Minnesota.

Whiteside to Sacramento.

Could also throw a pick at Minny or Sac, whatever.
I've heard that Sly likes three ways.

I think the pistons are a team to watch with regards to Portland. Olshey and Arn Tellem have a long history together. They’re in a position to sell and have pieces that should interest the blazers; Morris, Snell, Rose, etc. Portland meanwhile has expirings, picks, and possibly some younger players that should interest them. Maybe they line up on something.
Let's go, lol

TRADE 1

Spurs go with a rebuild and Blazers push for win-now this and next year:

Whiteside
Bazemore
Collins
Hood
Our 2020 #1 pick

For:

DeRozan
Aldridge
Rudy Gay

TRADE 2

CJ and a #2 pick to Detroit for Blake Griffin and Detroit’s protected (top 3) #1 2020 pick

Dame / Simons
DeRozan / Trent / Hoard
Carmelo / Gay / Little / Hezonja
Aldridge / Tolliver / Griffin (for next season)
Nurkic / Skal / Brown
I don't see this happening.

How about we stay with Whiteside and trade Nurkic for Aldridge. Bazemore for Rudy Gay

We know what we have in Whiteside. We have no idea if Nurkic will ever return to form! If Whiteside / Aldridge / Mello / CJ / Dame were our started with Simons / Trent / Gay / Collins / Skal et al off the bench....we’re a veteran shooter away from being pretty good

we can throw in our #1 (top 10 protected)

Because Whiteside is a free agent. If he leaves your whole plan is screwed and Aldridge/Gay are too old to compensate for that.

I was trying to make a deal work where GS got Bazemore, Culver, and Okogie plus picks from both teams, Portland would get Covington, Dieng, and whatever contract from GS needed to make it work that fits into the Hood DPE and Minnesota would get Russell and filler. Something like this:

Obviously the filler guys can be changed around.
Well... That's a good trade scenario for the Blazers for sure.
Kind of thinking the cops might come and arrest Neil after a theft like that though?

Teams that could/should have interest Whiteside and his bird rights imo. Doesn’t mean they can all acquire him, they’re just teams I think he’d upgrade.

Atlanta
New Orleans
Boston
Charlotte
Dallas
Sacramento
Golden State
Clippers
Spurs

the theme for thos thread should be "if it sounds too good to be true..."

none of these trades proposes have any chance of working. why not baze and hassan for giannis??? works in trade machine!!!

I think the list is just:

Dallas

The rest don't seem to need Hassan right now.

Mike Richman thinks that Whiteside and Bazemore are gonna stay in Portland because it will be difficult to trade them, and that the Blazers are likely to let them walk in the summer

So Whiteside is definitely gone huh

If we could trade CJ for DeRozan, Sign Whiteside to an extension, we’d be in good shape if Nurkic were to return in shape;

Dame
Simons / Trent
DeRozan / Little
Carmelo / Hoard
Whiteside / Nurkic

So you think Nurkic is coming off the bench?

Do you put your faith in Nurk, who appears rather injury prone? Do you put your faith in Whiteside, whose play went downhill the last time he signed a new contract? Does having both mitigate the risk - or just double it?

Next move Whiteside to the Knicks for Portis and Wayne Ellington or Randle/Frank. Then find a way to dump another $2M and that should get the team under the tax...I think. Then use Ariza and Portis’ expirings to land Aldridge or Blake.

Cant combine those, right?

Yeah, but they are both non-guaranteed contracts that would become guaranteed if traded in the off season.

Yeah, I assumed that. Should still appeal to Detroit or maybe even Cleveland if they can’t find a trade for Love before the offseason.

How about Whiteside, Swanigan, and a protected first or some other pick to Cleveland for Nance and Henson? They could take Swanigan on with one of their exceptions. I believe this would get Portland under the tax.

edit: yeah, give me nance

Wouldn’t that just be for this season? I’m talking about an offseason/next deadline move.

Since the Kings trade hasn't actually been consummated yet, they could theoretically expand the framework if there were another deal available that required Ariza's contract.

Theoretically, sure, but I believe that once the call to the league office is made it usually can't be altered even though it isn't official yet. There are of course exceptions to that like last year when Washington told the league the wrong Brooks in the trade, ha ha. I may be wrong but there are deals made at the draft all the time that have to wait until the new league year and I don't recall those being altered later.

Or get Otto Porter who is also a career 40% 3 point shooter. If healthy (along with the rest of our team) an Ariza, Porter, Collins, and Nurk frontline would be pretty solid.

Just to be clear, if we are unable to find a taker for Ariza's 12.8 mil expiring deal next summer, we effectively ate about 1.8 mil of cap for deadspace.

Again.

Porter would fit, but idk how that would work if getting under the tax is an objective.

I have the exact number written down at home but it's somewhere around $19.7 million the Blazers could take back if only Whiteside was going out in the trade. Including Swanigan is just barely not enough to get fully under in this scenario, I believe. It would also push Cleveland into the tax which I doubt they'd want to do.

Again.

Ariza's guaranteed date is June 30. Portland will have to make a decision well before the off-season

We'd only have until June 30th to trade him or waive him, not all summer if that's what you meant. There is the possibility that they'd pick up his contract for next season too based on how things go the next 3 months.

There are certainly ways to duck the tax, but almost all scenarios involve a team with a trade exception (like Dallas has a big one with wiggle room under the tax line) taking on someone in the deal. So it will be interesting to see if that can be accomplished or if the Sacramento trade was enough savings to not be worried about cutting more in a Whiteside trade. Who knows?

If getting out of the tax was the true goal of any trade moving forward they'd have to make moves like:

Whiteside and a pick (probably a 1st) to NY
One of Randle/Portis/Morris to Portland
Taj Gibson to Dallas

Whiteside and a pick to Chicago
Thad Young and maybe Valentine to Portland
Satoransky to Dallas

These type of deals would accomplish getting under the tax line but I don't think they really improve the team enough moving forward plus we'd have to likely give up more assets to do it. It just depends on if the goal is financially motivated or if they actually want to compete for a title moving forward. If it's the latter, I think a move for Otto Porter or someone like that makes a ton more sense but I'm worried that won't be the case.

So we pretty much have to find a team that is willing to do what Sacramento did, but with Whiteside. Idk how many willing teams are out there, but the Knicks make sense. They’re a shit team far enough under the tax to take on money in exchange for some picks. They also have numerous guys with similar contract structures to Ariza. Wayne Ellington, Taj Gibson, and Elfrid Payton all have partial guarantees for next season. Randle has a partial guarantee in ‘21. Portis has a club option.

Like Ariza, they could theoretically also help the blazers on the court. They’re not useless players.
