There are certainly ways to duck the tax, but almost all scenarios involve a team with a trade exception (like Dallas has a big one with wiggle room under the tax line) taking on someone in the deal. So it will be interesting to see if that can be accomplished or if the Sacramento trade was enough savings to not be worried about cutting more in a Whiteside trade. Who knows?

If getting out of the tax was the true goal of any trade moving forward they'd have to make moves like:

Whiteside and a pick (probably a 1st) to NY
One of Randle/Portis/Morris to Portland
Taj Gibson to Dallas

Whiteside and a pick to Chicago
Thad Young and maybe Valentine to Portland
Satoransky to Dallas

These type of deals would accomplish getting under the tax line but I don't think they really improve the team enough moving forward plus we'd have to likely give up more assets to do it. It just depends on if the goal is financially motivated or if they actually want to compete for a title moving forward. If it's the latter, I think a move for Otto Porter or someone like that makes a ton more sense but I'm worried that won't be the case.

Personally I think it makes a lot more sense to take on future money now and a move for someone like Porter makes more financial sense than it did two days ago. The way I look at it is if you’re a contender, being in the tax is just part of the deal. Can’t just waste the core of the rosters prime. They can get under the tax for this season, I mean it makes sense, but hopefully that also means more serious moves for next season and beyond.

I'm just worried about making it harder to make the necessary moves this summer if they duck the tax. Say they trade Whiteside and a pick (maybe 2 2nds again) for Portis (with Taj or whatever salary going to Dallas). Then they decide to not pick up the option on Portis or Ariza. That basically leaves them with roughly the equivalent of the Full-MLE in cap space, which they could get anyway being over the cap and just using the MLE instead of the space. So then you think if that's the case they might as well keep one or both of those two next season and still use the MLE. I guess they'd have two decent sized trade exceptions to be creative with too but with basically no 2nd round picks through 2027 if we traded two more of them or even worse if they had to give up a 1st to duck the tax then that further limits the assets to use in trades using those exceptions.

That's why I'm really hoping that the savings from the last trade were enough to trade Whiteside without needing to clear more. Having an Otto Porter or Covington/Dieng type haul would be a much better jump on next year.

Hold up doesn’t Dallas need a center? Weren’t they talked about re: Drummond?

How about Whiteside and Hezonja for Delon Wright and Courtney Lee?

Close again but isn't quite enough to get under the tax.

Olshey has a good relationship with a Griffin, how about Favors and Melli for Whiteside, Swanigan, and a pick? That gets Portland over $7M closer. Is that enough?

Around the deadline:
CHI Gets: Hassan Whiteside, Trevor Ariza, Caleb Swanigan
SAC Gets: Cris Felicio, 2020 POR 1st (Top 16 Protected), 2022 POR 2nd
POR Gets: Otto Porter, Nemanja Bjelica

Gets us under the tax and lands us two elite shooting (40%+) forwards.

Do you put your faith in Nurk, who appears rather injury prone? Do you put your faith in Whiteside, whose play went downhill the last time he signed a new contract? Does having both mitigate the risk - or just double it?

mitigates the risk and gives us bragging rights that we are the team with the best combo of centers

perhaps a Nurk (high) and Whiteside (low) twin towers on occasion?

as an aside, I’d take Whiteside over Aldridge moving into next year, so I see little point in trading for LMA. How about pitching Whiteside and getting him an extension so that he can stay!? And move CJ for a bigger guard or wing; DeRozan with Dame sounds like a stronger duo that Dame with CJ if you ask me

I think keeping both Hassan and Nurk on the same team is a recipe for disaster. They both have had issues like that in the past. They want to feel they are the man so you will probably think i get 48 minutes of elite play at C, but you might also get both of your Cs underperforming.

Would you do Whiteside/Little and our 1st round pick for Love and the Cavs 1st round pick?

Oh, that's actually interesting if we made it like the right to swap picks just in case ours moved up if we didn't make the playoffs. That's a Love trade scenario I might actually consider but I don't see the Cavs agreeing to it.

If we decide to not pick up Ariza's deal on June 30, then we will have the following deadspace on our books going into FA in July.

Ariza -1.8 mil

Andrew Nicholson - 2.8 mil (per year thru 2024, ugh)
Anderson Varejao- 1.9 mil

This freaking stretch provision is one of my least favorite things about the CBA, and I hate that Neil used it on those two.

Unless there's a legit role player we can get with the capspace we have remaining, it makes perfect sense to just keep his 12.8 mil on the books to use in a trade later.

I read that Ariza could bring back about $17M after his option is picked up. Portland doesn’t project to have any other big expirings, while guys like Blake, Aldridge, Porter, and Love could all be available. If Olshey can swing a similar deal with Whiteside, getting a sizable short term contract in return, he’d set himself up to make a move involving one of those players, all while keeping the current squad competitive.

Correct. Best case the max cap space will be slightly above the MLE. It isn't enough to make it worth it to waive the TPE
Must have done some intel to see gauge this FA market and he punted on it. As long as we maximize our flexibility in both assets and moveable pieces for next year, I'll be happy. I like the TPE-- I know Olshey has a bad history of just letting them expire, but it's a useful piece.

Just gotta get through this season with no more major injuries.

There we go, that’s what we need to clear.

Based on this, if Portland is $6.3m over we ought to see if we can do two trades with the Bulls:

Ariza -> Felicio (saves $4m this year, but costs $6 for next)

Caleb -> Hutchison ( no salary change. Portland just gets a prospect SF for a non-NBA player).

This would make it close enough that Portland could duck the tax with a small Whiteside trade

this with one caveat. If there is a FA they really covet, and he actually wants to come here for ~20 million, moves could be made to create that space. But a FA choosing Portland? That’s a funny one.
