BRICS looks tempting especially if you want to teach the US a lesson in being a good trade partner.

I'm actually still trying to figure out how Trump can legally break the CUSMA that he himself got instituted to replace NAFTA so as to impose the tariffs. The tariffs, as I understand that, would be a direct violation of this 4-year-old trade agreenment.

If hatred and meanness were a policy, Trump would be the greatest legislator/diplomat ever.

However, this is something that is best discussed, not dealt with with threats through the press.

I'm pretty sure Canada and Mexico don't want Fentynol inside their borders either, but I don't think this is really the reason for the tariff since Trump originally proposed these tariffs for other reasons entirely. One almost gets the feeling that he felt people were cooling on his tariff plan as originally stated so he though taking more of a rah-rah, jingoistic, xenophobic approach was better suited to sell it.

When our economy struggles and inflation rises, I don't think Average Joes and Josies are going to care much about tariffs-v-fentanyl, though.

This just has disasterpiece written all over it.

Want to stop fentanyl? Maybe start by working to defeat the Central American drug cartels by helping stabilize their governments and law enforcement. You know, the ones we destabilized under Reagan.

I’m assuming he’s just going to break the agreements unilaterally. What could the legal consequences even be? I don’t see how the US could be held to the agreement involuntarily. It’ll be really interesting to see what happens here; I’m curious to hear what you figure out.

Can he do it unilaterally, though? Doesn't Congress have a say on this?

And, yes, I know he'll try to do it anyway and use SCOTUS's recent rulings to push it through, but I think even conservative Congresspeople would fight him hard on this ... the conservatives might fight harder against this than the left wing.

I certainly hope we see some actual resistance from Democrats; my worry is that they are easily bullied (which is why I wanted Harris as president; we could have pushed her left with pressure) and Trump might cow them with threats to their states. I guess I assume Trump himself will not play by any rules so long as the SCOTUS is in his pocket; for him the chips aren’t real and he can go all in every hand.

Conservative resistance would be really nice to see, and might save us until 2026/7.

My sense is that the lack of resistance from some Democrats isn't so much that they are being bullied is that there are those of us that think that giving MAGA at least some of what it says it wanted but we know they didn't think through is going to give them a fatal stomach ache. They broke it, they bought it. If you don't think democracy matters, OK, here's your stupid prize.

I just think this is going to be the last three Republican presidencies on steroids where their policies resulted in economic turmoil or worse and the Democrats and their dangerous socialism bailed the U.S. out.

Agreed; I’m not super happy that my rights are one of the prizes democrats are thinking about handing to the republicans but I’m willing to see what happens. If the filibuster is killed we might be in for some real trouble though.

I understand your concerns. I don't think because some Dems are willing to let the GOP get sick overindulging on its own poisonous agenda means they're going to just give a free hand on everything. I think they'll do what they can to protect your rights. I don't think they're at the point of letting people die or be put into concentration zones, but less drastic right-wing policies can be allowed to manifest and still will blow holes in the whole MAGA myth, IMO.

Thanks, I appreciate the reassurance!

My anxieties come from the fact we are such a small number of people as a percentage of the population, but have an outsized political radioactivity right now. Dems will obviously tie up deportation in the courts as long as they can, but will they shut down the government when an HRT ban is added as a rider to a budget bill? A small population doesn’t net you many wins when the average person just wants a functioning government. But thank you; I take what you say to heart.

I'm all for unions, but I'm not for having people do jobs that machines can do as well or better.

They can’t do them as well or better. So many problems with driverless vehicles. Meanwhile undermining the role of the job and trying to take away someone’s livelihood.

Automation in some facets are fine. But driverless vehicles is a joke.

That's now. They will get better. If they can't do the job as well or better the numbers will show it.

But the reality is that we have a huge shortage of truck drivers. If we can offload some of that work to keep shipping prices down that's a good thing.

There are definitely local routes that automated trucks could handle.

This is somewhat similar to self checkout. I much prefer it. I rarely have to wait and my groceries are actually packed the way I want them.

The wife and I got dinner at a Toshi's Asian Cafe today. Walked in, placed my order on the touchscreen. Grabbed my table number and then they brought my food out to me when it was done. Didn't have to wait for them to bring my check or anything. Just finish up and leave.

Very nice experience. No need to wreck it with employees who don't really want to be there being fake to me.

Yet people complain about it taking jobs... It's just more efficient.
