The Rangers have announced that Ryan McDonagh will succeed Ryan Callahan as captain of the New York Rangers.

McDonagh will be the 27th captain in Rangers history.

Glen Sather said in a statement, “Ryan McDonagh exemplifies what we want a New York Ranger to be. He has earned the respect of his teammates through his commitment to excellence, both on and off the ice, and the passion with which he plays on a consistent basis. He is the ideal choice to lead our team as its captain.”
 
Chuck, excited for the season?
Mcd will be a better captain than cally.
 
Now you know the season is getting close to getting underway. Chuck has come out of summer hibernation and is posting again. Chuck, what do you think of the DUUUUUUK???
As for captain only other choice imo was Staal and I guess between his contract situation and injury history McDonagh was a better choice in the teams eyes and I can't argue. The kid really wanted the C and I think he'll do a terrific job as our captain going forward.

I bought a cally jersey last year, so i'll need something with a longer life expectancy. The question really becomes do i give my money to gerry cosby or not.
 
I am pumped for the season. It is great to have hockey back. Hopefully our offseason is just as short next summer...:).

I am very happy Duclair made the team. I think it was the right move for sure.

And McDonagh is is the rightful captain. It was the right choice given his age and contract, and the fact that he will be a top 5-7 dman this season and for many seasons to come.
 
Duclair’s agent says that the Rangers have told him that Duclair will start in New York but may not spend the whole season with the Rangers as he can be sent back to the QMJHL at any time.

The Rangers can keep Duclair as long as they want and return him to the QMJHL at any time, especially since his contract burns a year no matter where he plays. If Duclair starts to stagnate the Rangers can keep him, let him play for Canada at the World Juniors, and then decide whether to keep him or send him back to play for the Memorial Cup.

i don't want to assume and say it's because he left for the money because an objective fan wouldn't say that, otherwise former captains like Messier would also be considered "less".

Chuck, pretty sure once the duke plays in his 10th nhl game he can no longer be sent back to juniors.
 
Don't think so mel. That provision is for not burning up a contract year the player can only stay up for 10 games or the year is burnt. Since the year is burnt regardless he can stay for more than 10 and it is the same deal. He just cannot play in the AHL. So he can stay for more than 10 if his play warrants it.


Because of his age, Duclair cannot play in the AHL this season, and because of when he signed his contract, the first year of his entry-level deal is already in effect, whether he plays here or back in Quebec.

Messier delivered the cup and would beat the crap out of guys who did not perform. Cally was a good, hard working guy but I feel he never was a true captain or the leader on the team who would call guys out if the team played like crap.

Yep, he can stay up the whole year if play warrants it and your right he can go back after the 10 games to junior. What I couldn't find is if he does go back to juniors can he come back here this season or is he stuck in juniors for the rest of the season. I think the kid will be here all year though as I don't see him falling on his face which is what it would take to send him back to juniors.
 
I dont think Duclair can come back this year after being sent back to juniors.

A. You don't need to call people out to be a leader.
B. He led by example, by going down and taking pucks to the face and giving max effort game in and out.
C. He became captain before the 2011 season, and between 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 seasons, the Rangers went 77-42-11. That's a pretty damn good record for this team with Callahan as its captain. Don't know what the Rangers record was at the time of the trade last season, but they were certainly over .500 but don't want to go over the game log.
D. This is probably just the latest case of a player suddenly being crapped on b/c he's no longer a Ranger.
 
oh, and looks like the village idiot has some computer time tonight.
