Re-signing Grant

Well maybe his agent just wants to try to get a little more (as they should) But if Joe thinks they will be unreasonable....then you might have to trade him in the next 2 weeks. I would hate to see that happen because I like him. We are not in the negotiations so it is hard to say for sure.

I want him on a good contract in case we need to trade him later. I don't care about the luxury tax. Imagine Grant at 30+M providing <20M value. It's another CJ situation all over again.

The number of years is 4 or 5. At Grant's age and play, it's not the deciding factor, IMHO. Averaging $28 million per, Grant would make less on average than 45 players (according to Spotrac).

Looking at those players, there are PLENTY where if it's Grant vs. Westbrook (too easy) or Grant vs. a really good player, who do I want? Who do you want? Grant vs. CJ? In isolation and without regard to team needs, it's Grant by a country mile. Should he make an average of $33.3 MM and get 5 years? Because CJ does? While the money for Portland does matter as part of their overall team salary, Grant getting more than $28 million for 4 years looks likely. Yeah, sure, it's a matter of how much and 4 or 5 years, but the Blazers offered the max of what they could right now. Good job, Portland. I'm not concerned in the offseason and especially not until then.

Being able to trade Grant if needed is a concern and his performance relative to other players in that salary range makes a difference, too. Since getting the max this summer with 5 years isn't going to happen, I'm just glad that Grant has played so well and likes being on the team. IMHO, CJ isn't worth his contract and absolutely wouldn't be if he was still a Blazer. Grant has a better chance of "earning" his than does CJ. CJ all over again? No need for being that hopeless.

I think Grant helps the Blazers as much as McCollum did, if not more. If he wants CJ money, he should go get it. Blazers going for a coupon discount on Jerami. He's playing quite well, a free agent bidding war might screw up the Blazers cap space, but that's not Grant's fault.

Good move offering Grant before the trade deadline. If it looks like he wants more than they want to pay, or he just wants out, they can include him in trade scenarios before it's too late.

I would imagine that extension offer has been on the table for weeks, if not months

He apparently has turned down the 4-year $112M (AAV: $28M) offer the Blazers extended. I would consider 5 years at that $28M number but not sure I would exceed that or it becomes an albatross towards the tail end. If his salary expectations are beyond the $28M I personally would trade him prior to this year’s deadline. He has not had a material impact on the team’s success which, to me, is the only metric that matters.

If he re-signs for the max I think they will move Ant, Nurk, and Hart for what they hope is a heavy hitter.

Can you imagine where this team would be without him? Probably in 10th or 11th place in the conference. We should definitely give him whatever he wants.

No, we should not give him whatever he wants, he's solid but no way "that good"

Good point. We're 2 games under .500 with him. It would be strange to call him a roaring success win/loss - wise.

WOW! Look at what just got tweeted!

I think if you don’t have a wink wink deal commitment you have to trade him unfortunately. Can’t risk another LMA situation.

I'd consider trading Grant because he's going to be 30 once this new contract kicks in and the team is not anywhere close to contending, its many more years down the road.

But I'd only trade Grant if its a real good offer, multiple first round picks, etc. He's been a very good player here. If the Blazers can get some great young assets then fine do it. If not then just see what happens in free agency, either resign him or let him walk. Yes theres a risk he walks for nothing.

Can't build a contending team if your scared to take any risks.

might be about a 5th season

Likely....but it better not be ANYWHERE NEAR the max for a 5 year contract. That number is insane and would handicap the Blazers even more financially than they are now.

I guess Jerami won't sign Cronin's mandatory budget Blazers offer. Grant is going for a bigger summer deal. GM's in this league can be sharks, and if there's blood in the water, like jacking up Jerami's contract just to screw Cronin, you know there will be some fins circling their prey.
