He doesn't have to be a top ten player to contend. is chris paul still a top ten player? Is phoenix a contender?
The Suns went and got Paul after building a solid young team with Booker, Ayton, Bridges. It's not comparable at all. They blew it up. They got a bunch of young guys. They added Paul later as a veteran presence.

if we trade dame for picks, those picks will be late first rounders, not lottery picks.
We don't have to keep those picks. And that's the same argument that people made about the Celtics trading Garnett/Pierce to Brooklyn..... and then Brooklyn was terrible and those picks were worth a ton.

Yah, we can trade those picks for a bunch of mediocre talent, then trade them for draft picks, and on and on.........

Any chance we could bend NOP over a barrel? And then send out Valanciunas and Nance somewhere else.

We traded a pick and a TPE for Jerami Grant. Do you think he's mediocre talent?

I tend to agree with this. If the intent is to build a young team first and then use future picks to add a really good player to be a contender, I would rather use the picks we can offer now to find that same type of player while keeping Dame, SS, and Grant. If we can land a pick now in the 2-4 range...... that will probably be a higher draft pick than any contending team (that wants Dame) can give us. May 16th can't come soon enough.

Yeah I just really want to know where our pick is. It's going to dictate so many things.

sorry...I wasn't clear

what I was getting at is that whenever anybody suggests keeping Dame and making a trade or transaction to upgrade the roster, somebody is absolutely guaranteed to dismiss the move because it wont make Portland an immediate contender. Ergo, they say trade Dame instead

in other words, if the resulting team after a Dame trade is several moves and some good fortune away from being a contender, it isn't really the significantly better option than keeping Dame

Watching Dame play is fun from a personal player standpoint but not necessarily from a team standpoint. So if we could get a haul and be better down the road than #5/#6 seed lottery picks in back to back years, versus watching Dame put up nice numbers while the team continues to not be a legit contender after being exactly that for the last 20+ years, that seems a pretty easy decision.

Especially when at the end of watching Dame put up nice numbers with little to show for it from a team standpoint, there would be no assets coming back for him. Like Oden....like Roy.....like LA...like so many others.

With Mike Schmidt on the draft team I can see them trading down in the draft as part of a trade coupled with Ant's contract...you could still have a draft pick, just a lower one. and maybe net a Jaylen Brown or OG type player ..I think Schmidt is a real talent for team Cronin over the off season

Nurk/ Johnson for Christian Wood (UFA) in a sign and trade. Nurk gets to go hang out with Luka ( Fellow countryman ). The under utilized (By Kidd ) Wood , gets a new start , and starters minutes, in PDX.
Wood got bench because he not a good defender yes he has some offense but trying to improve your defense wood wouldn't be the answer.

Your not going get Brown or OG for Simons. I believe if Simons gets traded he will become a 6th man type player due to his defense and the same thing that the Blazers needs to consider.

way too much of a stretched comparison

when Garnett was traded to Brooklyn he was 37; Pierce was 36. That's 4-5 years older than Dame now. And the Nets had a dumbfuck Russian owner who kept the dumbfuck Billy King as GM. The same GM who essentially traded Lillard for Gerald Wallace.

I'm not saying you're doing it, but I have seen it around here: I think using the winning side of extremely stupid trades like that KG/Pierce trade and the Gobert trade as a template for what Portland can accomplish in a Dame trade is loopy

Probably not Brown, but I think Ant and a top 3 pick would get you OG. I just am not sure OG is worth that.
I would much rather offer more to land Brown or Siakam. Or #23 and Ant for OG

OG is absolutely NOT worth that much. Not even close.

I think there is what OG is worth, there is what Masai is asking for OG, and there is what the market will bear for OG.

The first one is irrelevant, unfortunately.

The issue with OG, for me, is that the package will likely be more than 3 2nds and a future 1st like Jerami Grant was. Meaning, you're going to be at a huge risk of the guy walking in free agency after he opts out of his deal in 2024, regardless of Portland's Klutch-ness.

That's a pretty insane risk profile because in this 'Dame Contention Window' path that Cronin has chosen, Dame's status is likely tied up in OG's decision—not to mention a substantial amount of assets potentially evaporating.

What about the non 1-2 lotto pick + the pu pu platter?
That'd be about it. Ujiri should have traded him when he was offered those picks at the deadline . From whoever it was.

Wood got bench because he not a good defender yes he has some offense but trying to improve your defense wood wouldn't be the answer.
Yet Dwight Powell & Maxi Kleber weren't good either. And neither of those two benchers were half as good as Wood. Kidd's just a bad coach. And he has a very punchable face.

NO WAY. Maybe for Mikal Bridges or Brown, but that's way too much for OG.

#23 and Ant, sure. Siakam is real good though . Probably do that for him. The OG stuff took me off course.

I'm definitely not trading Simons AND a top 5 pick for OG. Simons straight up, yes. Simons and 23 becomes iffier. If they want 5, it comes with Nurk, and we get back 13. I've seen Orlando fans that would do #12 for Simons, so maybe it's a 3 way, 12 to Toronto, Simons to Orlando, OG here. Toronto then has 12 and 13 they could try to package to move up, or to trade for an asset around Siakim and Barnes.

Maybe...
